I don't think I've played a game that was scary to me yet. Then again, I'm a rather hard customer when it comes to that genre. I had high hopes for Undying, but although it was fun, it was a complete disappointment to me in terms of 'scariness'. I'll cross my fingers and hope that Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth fills this gap.

Too bad I don't have time and money to create a game of my own direction. I have loads of ideas, and I would -guarantee- that it would be the scariest thing you've ever played.

This isnt too scary just like "aww! didnt expect that!" In Ghost Recon I was playing the guy who was ranked #1 on a ladder and I was ranked like #7th or something. I was in this crater and I just saw him and shot a few times. Then he disappears and about after 45 seconds a gernade goes off right outside my crater and from 1) the sound *headphones were on max* and 2) the fact it was a ladder match *i was a little on edge* I sorta let out an "aw!" and jumped in my seat a little. !

Clive Barkers Undying, definetely.

I am however pretty sure that CoC will be a lot scarier. Hey, they've got the Lovecraft license, after all.

Nothing really comes to mind, but I was playing Firearms the otehr day, as a sniper, when somone from the other team ran in right on top of me, out of nowhere. I literally screamed, and then a teammate with an M60 cut him down..

I uttered a loud and histeric thank you through voice com, and then i looked around at my family, who were all looking at me like I was a total freak..

I guess I am.

Silent Hill didn't creep you out? I can't play that game without someone else in the room... a demonstration:

For those who don't know the game, it's a Resident Evil-style survival horror game, except you're not some tricked-out, super-trained special agent; you're a father looking for his daughter in an abandoned, fog-enshrouded, creeped-out back-woods town. A few times in the game, you "shift" to a weird alternate reality which is defined by rusty machinery, blood stains, metal gratings, etc. Very creepy... moreso because this alternate world is a twisted mirror of the real world.

So you go into the hospital in the normal world, and eventually are led to the elevator. You get in the elevator, see the control panel:

[3]
[2]
[1]
[B]

You've already been to B and 1, so you hit 2. You go up... the door into the hallway is locked. You go back in, hit 3.. the door is also locked. You get back in...

...and there's a [4] staring at you. And you just *know* that everything's about to go to #### all around you... and you have no choice but to hit the button. And of course, when you exit the elevator, you're back in that freaked out twisted world.

Silent Hill isn't jump-out-of-your-seat scary... it's more like sleep-with-a-light-on-for-the-next-month-and-you're-STILL-afraid-to-close-your-eyes scary.

Silent Hill is for PSX... there's a sequel for PS2. Just as creepy, with better graphics. My only advise is not to take the radio... there's a radio that goes off whenever there's a creature nearby... it's much more tense if you don't have it, or turn it off. Excellent, excellent game.

i've never really played much in the way of freaky games, but AvP has to be the top of my list...

then, in a close second, X-com: Ufo Enemy Unknown, entirely because of night missions against Etherials and sectoids...

after that, X-com: Terror From The Deep, also because of night missions...

when i was really young and i played these games constantly, they gave me an irrational fear of aliens that is still with me in part, but it seriously used to be that i couldn't sleep at night because i thought they were coming... but i'm fine now

I'm not a big fan of being scared so there haven't been many scary games I've played. For example, I never even got past the system shock 2 demo :P hehe. But I've noticed one game that is shockingly missing from this list:

Alone In The Dark (1)
This is THE game that started the whole horror/survival genre, which Resident Evil copied damned near completely years later. This game was one of the first 3D games (3d models on a pre-drawn background heh.) The models weren't even textures heh, just each polygon was shaded a color.

But it was a really immersive story that had tons of environment and history to it (you could read all about crap in books you found along the way). Also, something very worthy of a mention nowadays, is that the evil there was PURE SUPERNATURAL, DEMONIC evil. Not this "corporate DNA engineering gone awry" crap that's so popular these days...

[edit] ohh, silent hill isn't just "things jumping at you" scary eh? good good, i hate that. I'm okay with the 'man this is wierd' scary, i just hate things jumping at you. Too bad its on console only...
[/edit]

Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare(something like that): The most advanced graphics for the PS. MY goddness, the begining movie was awsome. But it was like Resident Evil gameplay(exactly like it).

Resident Evil Seris: After the tunnel scean with that one piano song, i was freaked.

Half-Life: Got right to the point, kinda scary.

I think the only reason AvP didn't freak me out was due to the fact that whole idea has been played out way to much, You knew what to expect going around a corner in a dark room. Or down a hallway.

And silent hill, the game was ok, but when you've played all the resident evils its just another horror/survival game.

Alone in the dark was ok, But unlike doom blocky creatures didnt alarm my, due to the fact they where blocky and moved strangly my mind didn't register that they could possibly be real.

System Shock is my all time scariest game, Your sitting there alone in your house with the lights turned off for effect and surround sound blaring creeping through empty hallways and bam! a ethereal image appears before you, of course you jump in your seat and fire off a dozen rounds before you realize its another damn ghost image. Or youll be going through a highly infested area and youll come across a room with that familiar chittering and you just know if you go around that corner youll come in contact with a room full of open skull chimps, there brains glistening in the light just waiting to blast you.

And Shodan! Oh The whole Idea of Shodan gave me wet dreams....mmmmmm....

This was a story I had written in theme with system shock a while ago, then I got the idea to carry it further back. I mean I started the work in the middle of his ordeal giving readers no past and reasoning. Yeah, they were made a little weird looking(in a bad way). I mean for the most basic creatures, all you had to do was turn on your flashlight and they would retreat.

I noticed after re-reading my story I posted, the file didnt keep the Shape I gave it, it scrolls off screen alot. So download it, put it in a text editor and word wrap it for easier reading.

For a jump-out-of-your-seat scary game, has to be AvP1 and 2 as marine. A couple of times I was just walking down a dark coridor, all of a sudden I hear this loud bang behind me, and an alien comes flying out of a burst door and leaps at me, I yell insanely and spray bullets everywhere, sometimes I even fall out of my chair

As an overall horror game, Silent Hill all the way. I seriously had trouble sleeping for a few weeks after playing that game

I'm not much of a fan of scary games, but I really have to say that in a way you can't beat good ol' Doom. You could usually hear Spectres (the almost-invisible demons that ran up to you and bit you) coming, but I absolutely dreaded running into them in pitch-black rooms. Hearing that creepy bite sound coming out of nowhere just made you shoot through the ceiling, and it doesn't take too many bites to kill you, either. If I couldn't find any night-vision goggles anywhere, I sometimes used my chaingun or plasma gun as a makeshift flashlight just to avoid running into the ########.

scariest game: doom demo. I played that, beat it, had nightmares for weeks until I bought the full version. no lie. resident evil series- bleh. I was only scared that I would die before I could get to a typewriter or whatever to save my game.... Never played alone in the dark or silent hill. sounds like I'm going to have to do some shopping. oh, and X-com had it's moments, night missions... you'd THINK that you had the bugger's cleared out, but there's still one hiding, and then WHAM! there's something shooting at your guys that you can't see, and suddenly your down two members.
• TzarconTzarcon Join Date: 2002-02-28 Member: 259Members
I dont see whats wrong with you people. I never EVER thought doom was scary in any way. It was always just way to arcadish and graphics nothing like real life. I just kinda circle-strafed alot and blew things up. Besides, you can easily see the invisible demons
• GazaarGazaar Join Date: 2002-03-31 Member: 366Banned
Doom, by far, not scary. Like he said, too arcadish. Resident Evil 1, redone for the gamecube is pretty damn scary, they're redoing the entire resident evil series for the GC, which is cool, since I've never played the second one. Silent Hill is a close second, that game is disturbing-style scary. In the beginning when you're going after your daughter, Cheryl, down that alley and it starts getting dark, taking you to the dark world for the first time without you knowing it you find a wheelchair tipped over in a corner, one wheel spinning, squeaking. Going further you find an empty gurney ( I can't remember if it has blood on it or not), but finding an empty gurney in the middle of an alley, going further you find on a chainlink fence a body wrapped in bandages bleeding, kinda crucified on the fence then you get attacked by zombie baby things. If you beat the game and enter the alley in a new game on the gurney you see the outline of a body, and the sheet is bloody.

The first game that scared me was the first game I ever played on a PC: DOOM II. Those chaingun-robo-spider-brain things where in my dreams for days, and that big goat thing scared the crap out of me.

Half-Life was scary, but only because of the headcrabs. They wouldnt have been so freaky if it weren't for the zombie scientists that had them attached to their heads. Knowing what a headcrab would do if it got me made me really nuts for a while . . .

I actually feel much the same way. I feel that in one way, the model helps -- if you look at the head of the zombie model, you can make out the eye sockets and the teeth of the former scientist's face, underneath the headcrab. That REALLY creeps me out.
