No performance drop, and i should hope not on a geforce 4. Ping has gone from 150 --> 20-30 Whoaa yea. Rocks.

I'm noticing a pattern in this thread that seems to point to an issue with Radeon cards. I have a gf2 and get nearly 99 fps except in heavy fights but at worst it dosnt dip below 40 fps.

This is not a solution just an observation. I wonder if there is anyone out there that has a Radeon card that does not have FPS issues. If so, post your config/drivers/settings.

I think some of the people in this thread don't know how good they got it.

Try 15-20 FPS when things are good, and ~10FPS when things aren't so good! But there is alot of advice in this thread, so I'll mess around.

BTW, what's with fps_modem? I'm confused, I thought it was integrated with fps_max.

I have a Radeon 9700 Pro (latest drivers) and I don't have any problems with the config in the installer.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure Flayra is also using a Radeon.

Are you guys using Direct3D or OpenGL mode?

BTW, what about heapsize? The tweak3d guide says that this doesn't necessarily help out, as HL can do it's own memory managament. I'm packing 384MB ram, would using heapsize make a difference?

I had this problem the day ns 2.0 came out. My fps would be 50% of what it should be. But for some reason the problem went away by itself the next day. I was using a TNT 2 if that matters.

well ive tested it and there is a performance drop.

in an open area, my video2 has gone from 40fps ro 25fps

crowded bases gives me 5fps, which looks like a type of lag

My computer is a 700Mhz Celeron with a Radeon 7200 PCI card, and 196 megs of SD-RAM. It used to run NS decent, the only time I would get bad framerate drops were with a lot of buildings being seen in commander mode, or in a huge battle. However I can't even fight 1 skulk without dropping to like 7 FPS. It used to be around 25 then. That is a big decrease. Something is wong here.

I love NS and it makes me sad that I essentially can't play. Here's a screenshot of my 2.0 woes.

god damn shadow, how bright is ure monitor?

think ure gamma is so high u've fried ure testicles by now

looks to me like u running with a lot of detail on

im runnin at 512x400 mode, with every detail turned off.

its a bit ugly, but doesnt detract from the atmosphere, and at least its playabale

(oh yea - go into ns\music and delete the .mp3s for a performance increase)

Ok folks, here's a link to love:

http://www.tweak3d.net/autoexec/halflife/

You can get +15fps with this thing. Pretty damn useful. Don't turn picmip up though... FYI. There are other things you can mess around with in your config file, just goto one of those config reference websites (planethalflife has a decent one). If you really dedicate a lot of time into your autoexec, you can get ~20 fps. That might solve you guys problems. I am curious how the fps is dropping like stinking hell with 2.0 though. Try this. Multiplayer->Customize->Advanced Options->Dynamic Lights and Advanced particle effects off.

That's my situation too. My FPS in 1.04 used to be pretty poor - averaging 30-40 in clear areas, maybe dropping to 10 in a hectic firefight. But now I'm getting 15-20 in a clear area, and dropping to 4 in a heavy firefight.

I just can't play any more, especially as alien. There's no way in hell I can bite a marine at under 10 fps. The only thing I can do when I see a marine is run. Even as a fade, I can't kill anything because I can't see it. And the low fps seems to provoke other bugs, like often weapon selections aren't available (for example being a fade with only slash and metabolize, no blink). And what makes this even worse is the "res for kills" thing. Because I can't kill anything as skulk I can't get the money to evolve to anything else anyway

Enhanced sight would help I think, because there's an awful lot of extra screen clutter, such as the new hivesight which, being fuzzy, seems much harder to understand and distinguish from the real view.

For what it's worth, I'm on a 256MB PIII/450 with a 64MB GeForce3.

5 to 1 says that half the player base failed to back up their old config.cfg and now they are laying with bad rates max_fps commands brightness and gamma skewed and things like this. I suggest tweaking it back to previous levels.

i kept my old config but im still having poor FPS.

even though kharaa have a lot of screen clutter, im having more problems with the marines.

i think the muzzleflash is a big FPS killer.

can i still remove the muzzleflash?

i did it in 1.0x (not to hack or anything - it genuniely did improve my FPS (and playing on a p450 voodoo2 56k means any advantage i gained with no muzzlefash was evened out by my **** system setup))

The client side of 2.0, did the lower my PC performance, but I looked into it, and changed a few things around. But before I go into that, I honestly don't know why this sort of thing would happen, all of a sudden. It really digs into your Natural-Selection heart, and makes a whole. So this is what I did, to increase my PC performance, I guess. While using/playing Natural-Selection, ofcourse.

* First thing I did, was right click on my desktop, and go to :SETTINGS:. After this was complete I then went to :PROPERTIES:, and went into my video card drop down menu. I then, browsed, looking for an answer. Some sort of shine in the dark. I came up with the following.

* Vertical Sync
* Anti Aliasing
* Antiscoptric Filtering

For the three things mentioned above, I turned them off. This boosted my FPS, greatly. When I first installed Natural-Selection, I got about 30-45 FPS, and frankly, it was really ticking me off. Like a timebomb, basically. I set them at the following.

* Vertical Sync, off.
* Anti Aliasing, off, always.
* Antiscoptric Filtering, off, 0x.

Now, regarding solutions to Gamma, and Contrast problems. Look into your properties for video card, it MIGHT have an option to make increase it even more. But if not, boost the both of them up on your monitor. If this doesn't solve anything, and you can barely see anything, I then bring you to the world of "PowerStrip". This is a neat, and trusty tool, that REALLY, and I mean REALLY boosts your gamma/contrast up, by a lot. I don't know the exact URL for the product. It is FreeWare, so no payment hassles, or anything like that. But if you're still interested, head on over to Google, and just search for it. I'm sure you'll find what I'm looking for.

If the FPS soulutions above, don't solve anything. I suggest you boost your "refresh rate".

To do so, just head on over to Google again, and search for ReForce. ReForce, again, is a nifty tool, that locks your refresh rate. It should get the job done, hopefully.

All in all, I hope this helps.

One boost I found was by accident.

Personally, I've found the new FOV for skulks and lerks to be hard to get used too (mixed in with so many other changes as well) and so I switched the FOV to be locked at 90 degrees (option in advanced controls I believe). I plan to change it back once I get used to all the other changes though.

It feels like the skulk and lerk get slightly better fps for me now too! Probably because the computer has less view to render perhaps.

I've also noticed the fps drop a couple of times (haven't checked the numbers though but I know how it "should" feel - kinda like an rpm drop in my trucks motor) and it only happens on certain maps so far.

fps has dropped from 70 to 50 for me.

Only problem is the COMM HUD. I get 14-25 fps and it can get to 0 on really bad games, the names above heads are the cause i believe for this.

Actually, neither of these quotes are correct. NS 2.0 does not come with a config file. It reads in your previous config.cfg (either your NS 1.0 version if you had it installed, or your default HL/CS/DOD config if you did not), and then creates you a new config file on the fly with both your previous preferences as well as new NS-required defaults.

So if you had fps_max 70 in your old half-life config.cfg, that's what it will be in 2.0.

Just setting the record straight.

(PS: setting your fps_max above 100 makes no difference; HL is artifically capped at 100. And fps_modem has not been a used value by half-life since HL 1.1.1.0 was released. To tune, use rate, cl_cmdrate, and cl_updaterate).

I guess it's mostly CPU-bound. I have a P3 450MHz with a TNT2 Ultra. I get from 5 to 50 fps. (most often between 10 and 30), but it doesn't really matter if I use 640x480 or 1024x768, that only changes a few fps, even though it more than doubles the fillrate requirement. And I think it may still be CPU-bound even if you have a T&L card, as the HL engine is pre-T&L and not really optimised for it.

hi
im having weird random "pauses" or lock downs where i cant move fast but everything else (other players etc.) seem to go on fine. like moving my aim its like 1/4 of the original speed and my movement is badly lagged.
it seems to do this more when i play on marine than it does as alien. althou this happens on rare occations but its annoying.
oh and some specs. im on DSL with amd 900Mhz,512SDRAM,ASUS GEFORCE 2 GTS 32...
anyone having/have had this type of problem with solution?

Hey Pod I tried that in console and I saw a HUGE performance jump, thanks! And I can't tell a difference from before either (graphics wise)! It still get's laggy at points though...any other tips that could increase it? I still get occasional FPS spikes.
