Question about actual gameplay

Well, kinda i suppose. ^^;;
Howdy, after not posting in a grip and a day. I have a kinda odd question to ask...

What's the average time for a match? Like... How long before an actual win occours.

And what's it like when the opposing team attains 'Uber' status.
Like... Marines VS. Tinys and Blinks.
Or... Aliens Vs. Uber Powered armor marines toting the best weapons and equipment and an expansive base.

What I'm getting at with the second... Is there ANY hope of the lesser team 'pulling it off' and winning?

I'd also like to know what it's like battling a Level 5. ^^;; I'd imagine... "Oh Sh*t... GET YER ARSES TO THE AIRLOCK! NOW!" *Rumble rumble rumble*

There are two ways to battle a level5.

One is to run backwards (meaning you run slower) and shoot at him hoping he'll die before he reaches you, which he pretty much never does.

The other is to drop all your guns and equipment, turn around, and just run. Even then you'll probably find sweet death awaits you.

I have an unrelated question that I'm to lazy to make a new thread about - What is it like to play as a flyer?

No idea how many grenade rounds it takes. It all depends on how close they hit, what upgrades a lvel 5 has obtained, etc.

As for the original question, if a couple aliens can get to level 5, they can easily trample marine bases and USUALLY win a game. Vice crsa, if marines are pumped and the aliens have not built up their hives, well, the usually die also.

Between 5 minutes and aout an hour. Really depends if people rush, how many are playing, how muhc is is spend on building or weapons, etc.

lol Zcaliber, I like the avatar ...

Well .. you see, the commander doesnt reall send out marines to take out the lvl5 - more like the lvl5 goes out to take out the marines.

It's not a matter of how many marines, but how well equipped and upgraded they are. This kind of balance is still STC.

From the sounds of all that still needs to be added and tweaked...it sounds like NS won't be released till Mid-September .

About the Flyer: As far as i know, you can't acutally "fly" but you "glide"... You can hit your XXX-button to hit your wings and get up a bit, but you can't fly around at will. Also each wing-moving(?) costs you energy, like all other alien-abilities cost energy and when you run out of energy, you can't fly untill it's recharged. But remember, everything is either completely wrong (I'm no Playtester or Dev) or STC...
  • ChromeAngelChromeAngel Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 14Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
Don't worry Zcaliber, it's not nearly as STC as it was. Like the man said it is feature complete. The main things left to be done seems to be replacing the placeholoder models/animations. Changes to things that effect how many marines it takes to a kill a level 5 seem to basicaly done, but Flayra is still making small tweaks to make sure the balance and gameplay is as good as it can get.

It's really difficult to describe flying, so I won't even try. Ramses is basicly correct in his description of 'Flying' with the Level 3.

Point #1: all of our "STC" responses. -- Basically, a lot of this stuff *is* figured out *and* balanced already... but in the off-chance that it changes in the future, we don't want to start handing out false information.

Point #2: flying. -- I've been told it's in the style of a game called "Joust," which unfortunately I've never played. Basically, every time you hit "jump" you flap your wings. Depending on the timing, you can either gain altitude or gain velocity in a horizontal direction - you can get moving pretty fast!

I personally have seen three very lucky marines (I was one of them) take down a level five without it killing a thing. Or even damaging anyone. Sure, it was sheer luck, but it happened.

I myself have been a level five a few times and not killed a thing (I really -really- suck as a level 5.. ).

And then I've seen level 5's level entire bases and kill off marine after marine, winning the game. It all depends on the players, a bit of luck, and the upgrades you have.

Also, the other key to remember when dealing with a level 5 is that it has no ranged weapon that can damage and can not get in very tight places. The first thing I do when I see a level 5 is, if I have jet packs, fly to a high up perch. If I don't have jetpacks, I head to the nearest vent, back in a foot or so, and start unloading shots. The level 5 is a big beast which has trouble dealing with the mice around it's feet and the birds above it's head. A smart marine will use this handicap to their advantage. Of course, buildings and marine carrying haavy weapons probobly wont be moving around much . . . Thats why I try to carry nothing heavier than a shotty . .

Can be researched late game to give them the ability to fly, probably works the same way the lvl three's flying works, press the jump button.
  • humbabahumbaba That Exciting Tales From the Frontline Guy Join Date: 2002-01-25 Member: 86Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
Somewhat. Jetpacks are like a jump where you keep going up as long as you hold the button. Flying is like each "jump" is a flap of the wings, theres a distinct bouncy feeling. It's very convincing and must be felt to understand fully. Very much and intuitive thing.

I think it was MonsE who said that all the "bad" bugs are out and that the playtest-build runs very stable. He (MonsE or Molec) said also that now there are only "crazy" bugs were you think "hmmm... thats odd" or "hmmm...whats that?" but nothing "hmmm... now I must reboot".

Yeah, I'm the pessimist of the family. Then again, being the one that always has one or two bugs more than the rest of the playtesters kinda puts me in that role automatically.

But in truth, there -are- only one or two 'Eh?' bugs and a few asthetic problems. RC4 was nice, and the next build will be even better.... RC4 was the first build I actually looked forward to playing after playing it once or twice.

Based on what you carry. Even the -ammo- has weight.
  • ZcaliberZcaliber Join Date: 2002-01-26 Member: 93Members
I'm guessing what you currently HAVE. Like you can go in with 1 extra weapon, chucking yer LMG and keeping the Knife ünd Pistol...

Or you can be a lumbering 'Ah ahm gonna pamp yoo ahp!' with every weapon.

I personally would'nt mind a few 'Eh? What what?' bugs... But then again thats me.

Waitin' for 1.8 of Dragonmod Z.... Waiting for 1.2 of Desert Crisis... Waiting for the next release of S&I... Waiting for the release of Natural Selection...

Ugh... All this waitin' is killin' me! @.@
