Can You Hold Off Hacking The Ns 2.0 Maps

<div class="IPBDescription">at least for a while</div> i want to enjoy NS 2.0 fully so all those !£$^"£!$@"%^"@ admins that keep stripping all the cool features (that make NS the best looking half-life mod) out of the maps using ripent (so they run on weak servers or run on weak player's computers that can't handle transparency effects like light glares) could you please not do that until i've had a chance to see all the maps in their glory.

and then it would be nice if servers could announce whether they use hacked maps or not so i could know what servers to banish.

I think you can now turn off particle effects in 2.0, and now that server lag is massively decreased it won't really matter, so probably most of them will not run ripent.

Wait.. wait wait wait wait wait. don't freak me out. the player can disable the particle effects or the server?
  • StoneburgStoneburg Join Date: 2002-11-11 Member: 8174Members
    No... server ops can.
  • LambdaProjectLambdaProject Join Date: 2002-02-20 Member: 230Members
Both, there is an option to disable partical effects in the customize menu for the player. The server can run a strip entity plugin that basically deletes the particle effects so NO ONE can enjoy them. Personally I'm with you on this but I'm not really worried about it.

I don't usually see that alot..
The one thing I see is the stream of res coming from an empty nozzle is about 1/4 the height of the normal one..
I actually think it looks better like that..
And if some servers do that.. just play on different servers

aaargh! if there is an option for the server to disable the special effects that will just make things worse. and let me guess, it'll probably be disabled by default and i'll have to go on a campaign to get the awareness out of how do enable the special effects on the server just like i have to do with Sven Co-op regarding the stupid time limit that stops the game and makes it start a new map.

will there at least be a way for me to be able to tell if a server has disabled the special effects without me having to look for the special effects?

The systems are on by default. And the ops will have little reason to disable them, as the server runs with 80-95% less CPU overhead than previously.

    I keep being amazed everytime I see those numbers. That's an incredible cpu cycle win. <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

80% - 95% That's really incredible, where have all these calculations gone?
Have they been moved to the client side of thing? does this mean I'll have
10 fps in stead of 25?

Entitity caching code is one of the big changes. It does not shift the load anywhere, it just makes things far more efficient.

I see this a lot in DoD 1.0 since the server and client loads increased rediculously between 3.1b and 1.0.

It's annoying when it actually removes important things like floors in DoD and switches in NS.

    Server performance is improved.
Servers can handle 32 players and long games now.
There are new serverside and clientside variables that disable or lower ns gfx effects.

i'm sorry but if those server performance improvements were made by disabling or crapifying special effects then they don't count as improvements in my opinion.

Ollj wouldnt know, hes not a beta server op, playtester, dev member, or vet. The gfx effects were not crappified or removed.

Agreed - can people please restrict themselves from starting rumours? I know that is a hopeless request, but I'm asking anway. Entity caching does not cause any visual issues.

Well, the server portion is to be released tonight <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

I'll be updating my (private) server, and I think my clan will be updating their server too. Tonight that is.

Hey MonsieurEvil can this "entity caching" be used with other mods? DOD is a hog for CPU. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> Sell Valve the code or something. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

gettin back to the original point -

those guys moaning about hacked-maps allowing low-end pc users to play NS - have u given thought to said PC users? im sure u r happy to spend all ur money on computers and video-games, and u've got ure 3ghz pc with geforce 4 etc...; but us casual players (im running on p450 voodoo2 56k) really appreciate these 'hacked maps'

Good question! Actually, Flayra designed this system about 6 months ago, but always ran into issues getting it run as well as it should have. It turns out that CS had a way to to do it, and from talking to folks from that neck of the woods it all worked itself out. I'm sure Flayra can provide a much more detailed story in a few weeks <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> .
