Yeah, even in 1.0x it happens. Grab a jp and watch the LMG idle animations. When he kinda "points it up in the air" it'll cover half the jp meter (and maybe some others, but that's the most noticeable) I could explain why and how it happens but it's much to hot right now.

Hmm... ice cream mixed with m&ms...

Only 40 minutes to go (70% done now!) and low res 2.0 action is mine!

For people who have never seen NS before, show it to them, and their instant reaction would be...

"Are you sure thats the half life engine?"

Truly remarkable how Flayra has squeezed every last ounce of an "ageing" graphics engine. The mappers and whole dev team have done a commendable job too - the maps in natural selection are amongst the most detailed, most intricate, and more awe inspiring maps in the hl scene - cs "official" maps do not compare in the slightest when it comes down to eye candy, nor do any other mods, with the exception of perhaps dod.

NS 1.04 is still fun even with its balance problems and niggling defects.

Just imagine what NS 2.0 will be like once all the people who didnt get a chance to playtest, start playing.

I just hope the community stays as friendly as it is now, and that NS doesnt turn into a "leet fest", which, is unlikely, as the whole game is based on the principle of teamplay and scores arnt shown.

The skulk orientation change is cool looking , but have you noticed the moment where they burst out of the vent 3/4 upside down ? This kind of trick will make skulks definitely way harder to hit. Now that they can use celerity more often... charging marines sounds more feasible all of a sudden.
• sejsej Join Date: 2003-01-19 Member: 12488Members
With leap it IS feasable, and i dont think its a bad change that skulks become better vs lmg standard marines...

Uh oh.

I was on a server the other day and me and 2 buddies, all with LMGs,shot down a fade with little hp loss. We went back to building our base when a skulk came and mowed us all down.

I mean , at hive one. Possibly in long corridors. Or in the marine base... skulk rushes are going to be harder to stop... I can imagine the whole marine team , with their weapons pointed at the base entrances in fear after 1 IP has been built , the rushing aliens thinking "GG or not GG ?"

In some ways its better, it has certainly pumped some life back into the old half life engine and its as innovative as hell. The graphics are impressive too.

But gameplay wise i think CS wins out.

Ill reassess my judgement when NS 2.0 comes out.

On a side note: is it just me or does devour look as fake as hell? One minute mr. onos is running around in circles in front of you and the next minute a big red sprite pops up. If I was a nubbin playing NS i would certainly be thinking "WTH?". That is my only complaint however, its a nice trailer. I watched it twice.

I thought it was extreamly cool, exp. the new skulk animations and the grenade launcher's animations, but one major gripe I had was the devour thing.

The onos itself could use a devour animation, like it's mouth opens, and if you get hit, you then instantly see yourself inside of a big red belly.

Other than that I think I may be at Flay's release party in Mass. I'm right over the boarder in NH. Heh, can't wait.

My opinion is posted at http://www.twistedportal.com

But I don't notice every detail like many of you. I do still intend to play the game.

The trailer was too much a bite off of The Family God, but it's nothing like his work. You even used the song he used in the "highlife" movie. I do realize you asked him permission to use that song.

People are competitive, they'll come up with something. That said, I hope that something is sucking up to the commander for guns... "Oh, yes, that commander is the BEST COMMANDER I've ever seen!" "No, he's the best EVER!" "No, he's doubly best!"

Actually, I take it back, that'd be kinda scary.

Well Monse I have to disagree with you in that the trailer, whilst it would almost certainly get new people into NS, failed miserably in it's attempt to get people BACK into NS. Let me explain:

People left the NS community for reasons that, one way or the other, came down to the balancing between the sides. I watched as the servers I played on emptied of players as every game turned into one endless continuation of jp-hmg rushes interspersed with 2 hive lockdowns. Many of the people who left, myself included for some months, were simply fed up with boring gameplay. Now we of the forums know that gameplay in 2.0 is much more differant. But just by watching the trailer, no-one could tell that the gameplay had changed much.

In terms of raw info and data the trailer fell short. The average former-NS player watches the movie, and knows that there are

- 4 new maps
- Some new crosshairs
- Some new commander sayings
- Some new models

He/she does NOT know that

- jetpacks have been nerfed
- Alien evolutions are no longer hive based
- Sensory has been boosted
- HMGs do half dmg to structures

This second cluster of information is exactly what the former player wants to see: proof that NS 2.0 will be devoid of the overpowered tactics which made 1.04 so bland after a while. I believe that the trailer really should have included info about the gameplay changes in 2.0 if it's desired purpose included getting people back into the game.

I don't see how this shows balance. It just shows nerfs and tweaks. To prove balance would basically require flashing by all the changelogs, and the hordes of time and energy the Pts and Vets put in... And I doubt that's going to fit on the screen.

In the end, if it requires intricate gameplay details to get people back, you won't get them back with a trailer. But, more often than not, throw enough eye candy their way and they'll be tempted to at least give it a few minutes worth of trying, and will then discover the wonderful new balance.

In order to show all of what you wanted Ryo, we'd have had to made what amounted to a lengthy tutorial. There is of course no way to interestingly show an HMG doing half-damage to a building or jetpacks being lessened without boring the viewer to tears. When it comes down to it, a mod survives based on word of mouth over all. If the game is better, people will learn and come back. If not, they won't. No amount of cinematography is going to matter a whit.

Overall, you have to consider the whole picture of a campaign, not tiny slices. We also send out a lot more info and screens and such to augment a trailer. It's main purpose is still to look cool and entertain. Only the game can impart the real experience, and only KNOWING that the game is coming out will get players back.

As a matter of fact I advertise NS freely on other mods/games. I say wow Im gonna go play "Natural-Selection" and they ask "WHAT!? WHAT IS THIS!?" I'm like, its a sweet new half-life mod. Its action packed, with lots of destruction and fun. Theres even a command mode for the RTS fans! Then they say "OMG LEIK WOW I R TRY TEH NATURAL SELEKSHUN" Then I go home and shoot myself because everyone SPEEKS SOH LEET. Word of mouth- Helping AMD crush intel since pentium pro 1's.

I agree Monse. How would want to watch the JP's be nerfed? Honestly that just goes to show "oh look they made it worse" if u really didn't follow 2.0.... A trailer is just supposed to give you an IDEA about the thing (NS in this case), its just like a movie trailer. They show you some cool parts to get you interested. For a trailer to a sequel im sure they wouldn't want to show how they got a new haircut for the movie and got a new gun.... You find that out IN THE MOVIE....

That's where I just can't agree with you. If, as you said, the intention was to bring people back then I still consider the trailer a failure in that respect. Yes, it looks cool, and yes it will bring new people into the game. But for the people who've seen the eye candy before a trailer simply isn't going to cut it: they want info. Why weren't electrified tfs or rts shown? You could have had peices of text flashing up like with the maps giving snipets of gameplay info, even if it was as slight as "new technology". Eye candy will bring in new players; it won't convince previous players that the game has changed.

Now you're probably quite right: it would be difficult to show gameplay changes in the trailer (although I think that some kind of attempt should have been made). In that case I would argue that the trailer simply cannot bring old players back: the best it can hope to do is convince some former players to go check up on the NS forums, where they will get the data they want.

That's why they put the website's address at the end of the video. If you want to find out what's changed, you go there. :|

I don't see how you can deem it a success or a failure. It may not be what you would have done, but that doesn't make it a bad thing.

Personally, I liked it. It was well paced, exciting, and atmospheric. If I was unaware of NS, I would have certainly been interested.

Oh - and about the HLTV; does each creature have its own icon? It looked like SHAMPOO was a gorge. (:

Ryo, ex-NS players who find out about 2.0 and don't even care enough to look up the changelog probably wouldn't be interested in coming back anyway. And I very highly doubt that anyone is going to assume that the entirety of the new 2.0 stuff is just what's easily visible in the trailer. It's only supposed to get people's interest so they can take the initiative themselves, not teach everyone the full list of all the cool new balancing changes in 2.0.
