This trailer is also a mean of catching new players by advertising the mod to your friends and relatives. Sure they might be reluctant to dl 64 MBs straight... but if they watch it , they will get caught.

Everyone should start his own PR blitz ! Think of your poor friends not knowing NS yet !

'gone fishing NS addicts on various forums.

In the past 3 days I have managed to get quite a few people interested in NS... Mainly because I would like to see/challenge some of my old friends to a game of ns ^-^
Total number of people converted/moved/introduced to ns: 5 Some of which were "hardcore cs fans"

One word
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

It was AWESOME! Not perfect it lacked a few things, like a proper list of the changes. But it ruled over all! I know I can't wait!

Watching it again and again I can see loads of details - I particularly like the way spores works for lerks as can be seen from the video

Is it just me or does the lerk spore gun look a lot like gorge's spit, only yellow? D: It kinda looks unnatural.

Well, as a side note, NS 2.0 is probably my last bit of PR. After 5 years of helping various mods, I'm just a bit burnt out and ready to go back to playing them as opposed to working hard on them. This means that all the people who want a chance at having their vision of how PR should work will have their chance to find out if they have what it takes . We'll see how many step up and and accept the challenge.

To ease back on topic - mojo: the encoding of the movies tends to make NS sprite effects look really cheesy. I assure you it looks a ton better in game.

Ryo: First lesson you need to learn when you come to tryouts for my job - there is no such thing as bad press.

For all movie critics in this thread and others: unlike most other aspects of a mod that you criticise but have no way to do better due to lack of technical abilities, anyone can make game movies when they own a game. Anyone! So I challenge you to put your money where your mouth is. Make us an NS movie and have the courage to post it out here on the internet for criticism. Show us how it should have been done, show us that you have the moral fiber to create as well as comment on. I am being completely serious. I am of the opinion that most critics are frustrated artists themselves... some with talent, most without. Let's see what you're made of, starting august 1st.

(and if you really wanted to make it fair, you'd only give yourself about 72 hours to make the trailer, including shooting all your footage).

Certainly Esuna!

For video editing, I recommend using FRAPS. The latest version is $30 and fantastically flexible and capable. However, the 1.99 versions and previous are freeware and what were used for most of this trailer (as 2.0 *just* came out - dahmit! I bought it right away, natch). I do NOT recommend using converted HL demo files until flayra can fix some of their playback issues. If you go the HL demo route though, I's change my video editor recommendation to shareware Videomach.

For free video editing, I recommend using a combination of Virtualdub and XP Windows Movie Maker 2.0 for titles and effects.

For encoding, I recommend using Divx and Windows Media Encoder 9.

For sound editing (remember, unless you get FRAPS 2.0 you will have to reconstruct your audio from wav files by hand), I would say grab audacity. Some people swear by Goldwave, but I'm an old fan of this app...

So there you go. Have at it.

Not true. The number one hook aside from word of mouth/reviews is eye candy. Even for a game so based around gameplay, strategy, and so forth, add in some new, entertaining eye candy (digestion), show it off, and you will get people back... They may not plan to stay long, just long enough to see what's new in eye candy land (or, maybe just look at screenshots and glance at the changelog), but that should be enough to let them know how much the gameplay changed.

They're obviously paving the way for 3.0, which will introduce giant marine models and giant alien models, to make the chambers look that much smaller.

In some ways its better, it has certainly pumped some life back into the old half life engine and its as innovative as hell. The graphics are impressive too.

But gameplay wise i think CS wins out.

I disagree.

I do not like CS or DOD, because I don't have excellent aim. Not just good aim, or even average aim, but ridiculously-good-dead-in-less-than-a-second aim. I was introduced to HL mods at LAN parties, and even amongst friends I get slaughtered in a few seconds. A few people grab one particular type of gun, and win. Or someone grabs a sniper rifle, and sits in one good vantage point. That entire area is off limits. That's just really aggravating. It's pretty boring to get shot up, then wait 5 minutes for the next game to start. There is no learning curve to the game. You either have it, or you don't (or you hack ). If you are that upper crust of gamer with precision aim, then I'm sure that CS is an engaging test of skills. But if you only have sub-par aim, then CS is more like watching a movie of people playing a game.

NS, however, offers many niches to people who have poor aim, mainly on the aliens side. Skulks don't have to aim right for the head, they just have to get up close. If I had a dime for every time someone got a kill from me acting as the lead skulk meatshield(on purpose), I would have....hang on.... maybe 3$. Lerks in 2.0 are the perfect support unit. Spikes are nice, if you have good aim, but with spores, umbra, and primal scream, you only have to be in the general neighborhood aim wise to get the job done. Gorges, fades, oni, none of these NEED snap mouse reflexes to be used to thier fullest potential. Rines do require more aim skill, but you can still try comm-ing, or just be the guy that builds stuff. Even if you can't aim for beans, just bieng an extra gun firing down the hall helps out a whole lot.

Overall, my point is that NS has much more and better gameplay than CS. CS may be more realistic, and the better game in the niche of high end gun play, but NS has more variety, more options, more openings for people of varied skills.

Well Monse I have to disagree with you in that the trailer, whilst it would almost certainly get new people into NS, failed miserably in it's attempt to get people BACK into NS. Let me explain:

People left the NS community for reasons that, one way or the other, came down to the balancing between the sides. I watched as the servers I played on emptied of players as every game turned into one endless continuation of jp-hmg rushes interspersed with 2 hive lockdowns. Many of the people who left, myself included for some months, were simply fed up with boring gameplay. Now we of the forums know that gameplay in 2.0 is much more differant. But just by watching the trailer, no-one could tell that the gameplay had changed much.

In terms of raw info and data the trailer fell short. The average former-NS player watches the movie, and knows that there are

- 4 new maps
- Some new crosshairs
- Some new commander sayings
- Some new models

He/she does NOT know that

- jetpacks have been nerfed
- Alien evolutions are no longer hive based
- Sensory has been boosted
- HMGs do half dmg to structures

This second cluster of information is exactly what the former player wants to see: proof that NS 2.0 will be devoid of the overpowered tactics which made 1.04 so bland after a while. I believe that the trailer really should have included info about the gameplay changes in 2.0 if it's desired purpose included getting people back into the game.

This is wrong. While the player may not see the imbalances are fixed, he will see some things that will want the player to DL the latest NS and play it:

- New Eye Candy
- New Maps
- New Attacks
- New Animations
- New Models

See the trend? 'New'. It's all new. The next thing a logical person would assume is this:

- New Balance on Gameplay Mechanics

If you don't assume this, then all it means is you can't follow an extreamlly simple trend nor can you see an obvious relation. This is the very logical step the movie follows. If you ask me, the movie did exactly what it set out to accomplish in a very good manner. Showing balance in a small movie around 5 min in lenght is downright impossible if not ill-advised to do.

The NS team isn't trying to win you over in a debate, and convince you to come back and play it with their promos'. They are trying to make you want to see what the hell the fuss is about.

I personally think your train of thinking would make you a terrible PR man.
