Blinking....

<div class="IPBDescription">Tool of distraction,or a useless weapon</div> I was wondering how blink can be efficiently used as an offensive tool rather than an a tool for evasion....because I was fooling around with blink for a while on an LAN (2on1,with me being 1)

Story : NS_HERA - Hera Reception

*Marines phase into reception*

Freaq : OK,Im getting some signals over there
[AG]**** : ....
Freaq : OMG he's a ****ing fade!
*RaVe shoots warning rocket*
Freaq : Damn get him!!
*RaVe blinks to opposite side of the stairway*
*Freaq fires six grenades into now empty stairway*
Freaq : Thats it your dead....huh?
*RaVe blinks towards [AG]*****
Rave killed [AG]**** with claws
Freaq : HOLY CRAP!!
*Freaq shoots like mad to RaVe*
*RaVe blinks to reception desk*
Freaq : OMG!!
*RaVe blinks towards Freaq*
RaVe killed Freaq with claws

Anyway,I'd like to know if there are any other uses for blink, other than transportation and....that incident.

BTW,those 2 people I knew them and killed them

ahem.... i have taken entire marine teams in siege005 (the best map to blink in the whole world), they were all armed with JP/HMG and chased me the whole game and couldnt catch me.

On regular maps... if the server has a /unstuck thing i use blink because it is useful in certian areas (hive rooms come to mind)

If it doesnt have /unstuck i stay away because the damn walls catch you and kill you more then the frekin marines.

I am interested how blink will work in the next version, it is a total revamp of the blink system. From what i hear, you turn totally invisible and move uber fast with low grav for a set amount of time or untill you attack... sounds ok i guess.

after re-reading your post... i will now answer your question. Blink is used for a couple things

1.) Confusing marines... really easy as you can blink about 50 times faster around the map then running it.... you can quickly circle around and nail a bunch in the back... Also, you can turn a normal game into a nightmare for a comm by blinking around and attacking many bases at once, making him think he has several fades and sends marines in locations you already left.

2.) getting up close and personal ASAP, which also avoids any fire the marines threw at your old location. When i am blinking, i sometimes have swipe on my quick switch button. IMO the fade's swing needs a WIDER radius, so you dont have to frekin AIM your swipes so damn accurately.... if i am touching a marine, he should be dead if i am swinging.

    and

    3.) transportation like you said before... (siege005 has that wonderful window <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> )

Blinking is an artform- use it wisely.

    1. Escape- Fades with confidence in the Blink are much more aggressive in combat. Many Marines feel rushing a Fade is the best course of action, since they will run away. Fades who rush in and take damage, will counter the marine idea of rushing in. Once they take significant damage, the Fade will be able to blink away to safety, with few marines on his tail.

    2. Attack- Blink is underated as an attack skill. Especially during Marine assaults, Fades that blink behind will suprise the Marines from behind. If you have other aliens drawing their attention to the front, you can wipe out entire seiges. To do this, aim for the wall/ceiling behind the marines.

The most valuable part of any map a true follower of The Blink must acknowledge is CEILING.
    WTH? The Celing?
Yes. See, Blinking requires a straight line with a large amount of space around it. Ceilings provide so. You have the best chance of blinking if you aim for the ceiling above where you want to land.
The best rooms to blink in are those which allow you to BlinkBounce.

    BlinkBounce?
Yes, its a term I just made up for a move I do. First, you need to be in a LARGE room, such as Cargo, Cargo Storage, or Refinery. Its a great maneuver, attacking or escaping. First, you aim towards the middle ceiling of the room. Now, if you just let yourself fall, you'll take damage and you'll be an easy kill. Thats why you really quick look down and blink at the same angle to the floor, landing care free. It confuses Marines and lets you get away/get behind them quicker.

This is very effective, considering the whole move takes about a second or less.

very true tactics....thats why I was born to play Fade

But of course theres the problem of being stuck, luckily only happened to me once

And if you are wondering about the expressions on their faces when we were leaving, they were terrified
And I mean their by those 2 marine peeps I killed

ever seen x-men 2? remeber the start bit? how the feds thought there were a few mutants attacking but it was one who could teleport? I like the sound of it. But comms can hear fades blinking round cant they?

Everyone can hear Fades with their little warp sound.

Blink is a great tool, but it requires too much room to execute in my opinion. Hallways, esp with lights, are a **** to maneuver in.

Has anyone been able to blink into a vent?

You know, you crouch and try to blink in. I tried blinking above, blinking in, blink blink blink and I cannot get into a vent. Fades can get in vents, they just can't blink there. That's retarded. FIX IT!!!

Blinking in hallways is easy, if you know how to do it. Crouch, Jump, Blink to Ceiling in distance. Bingo.

Or, just crouch, jump, blink to far wall.

If the marines have mess hall in Nancy you can blink down from cargo hold 2 to the hallway outside mess without using the ladder and without dropping and taking damage. If a gorge builds some dc at the back wall fo cargo, you can blick straight back up the ladders and fall down but heal from the DCs.

Heh heh - true true. Best bit out of the whole film.

As a fade I have blinked through certain doors - those that open automatically when you approach them (like at Marine Start in Eclipse) allow you to blink through them without triggering the door. I've surprised a few people in Eclipse that way as I bypassed the mines next to the doors and warped in right next to one unfortunate victim. I twatted another about then blinked back out.

    Fun fun fun in the fluffy chair! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

This one dude was a uber "elite" fade...his name was hmm...oh yes. Gadx. I was shooting at him then he blinked. I couldnt find him and then I turned around. He had blinked <i>over my head</i>. That was soo cool. I have always wanted to be a fade since then.

    I have loads of fun with blink. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

In fact, i select it as my primary weapon and then switch to swipe later.

But in 2.0 (i think) you cant blink upwards. Gone is the fun of blinking up elevators and flying over people's heads and getting past that unprofessionally done WOL. <!--emo&--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo--> its just not fair *cries*

Blink all of the time. It's great fun and effective too.

Btw did you see the new Metabolize ability? I was SO sure that fades were going to have a flamethower o well anyway i can see this not working like redemption for all us 56k-ers

    Story:
We were winning, the marines failing at the JP HMG rush, and there were a bunch of lerks and some fades, me being one of them. I get to Station access alpha(lower end) to find a group of marines holding my teammates at bay, ducking behind cover constantly. I at first throw acid rockets, but then think about blink... so I step out, blink right at the marines, and land behind them, and they didn't even look backwards despite me disappearing in thin air... maybe they thought I redeemed. The kills were quick and painful...

That must have looked really cool from my teammates point of view, I wish I could see it... suddenly a fade appearing from behind the marines, walking up to them without them noticing, and starting to maul... muahaha, so cool.
I wish old blink was still in :'(

I got in a super uber long 1 on 1 battle with a blink fade once. Was crazy, all i had was lmg and jetpack. we fought in the long hallway outside of generators on ns_caged and he blinked back and forth up and down the hall as i flew back and forth above and below the rafters. He chased me during my second ammo run(i put that much in him with out getting hit much, little acid splash thats all but you can only do so much vs a regen fade alone) and killed me.

My 15 second distraction for a relocation bought our team 5 minutes, but dam that was the craziest fade i've seen.

anyone have SPECIFIC info on how the new blink will work?
  • CaimanCaiman Join Date: 2003-06-01 Member: 16900Members
    NO

    BUT

I have heard little tidbits about it. The new blink is like "running really fast while cloaked" You can jump as well. The way to do it us to hold down fire button, and it will use up energy.

    I hate it already <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo-->

blink as it is lets you ambush marines in large areas (there is at least one in every map)

Blink almost never works for me. The only time I even try it is for moving faster down long empty hallways, or occasionally as a shortcut to get to a high ledge. I wouldn't dare try it in a combat situation. I'm bad enough in combat as it is.

I LOVE BLINK, I don't really use it much, but the fact that marine know fades can do it when two hives are up gives me a great advantage.

When my team gets 3 hives is when the great advantage comes in. I can put on cloak and walk straight up to attacking marines and just disappear before their eyes. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> They think I just blinked around them so they turn their backs to me( <!--emo&::fade::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/fade.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='fade.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> ), giving me the opportunity to kill them all easily. >:D

I agree with that completely. I think the new blink will work out better, but I think I will miss jumping up elevator shafts, which was the one thing that I found effective with the old blink.

Said on IRC... basically, the new blink lets you move like the noclip cheat, with the added bonuses of invis and 2.5x speed or whatever it is- unfortunately without the 'no clipping' part.
It would be cool to have this as an option, but I don't think that kind of advanced stuff can be changed with an option.
  • KaniranKaniran Join Date: 2003-01-19 Member: 12465Members
The old blink is far too user-unfriendly to make it into any kind of final version. I'm sure we will all get used to the new version quickly. It'll be nice to no longer blink myself into a wall.

I love the old blink, don't get me wrong. Nothing is more powerful at 2 hives than a blink/slash fade. Taking out a marine long distance never has been easier. Its just that the jump-duck-blink combined with the ability to clip into objects makes this skill very twitchy, and anyone new to the fade most likely won't use it.

Cons of new blink : No more teleporting through doors....

And I dont see why the new blink is so bad,at least you know where your going without getting stuck anymore <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

But the thing that bothers me....MT....bleh MT shouldn't be able to track blinking Fades....
