Insomnia Sucks

I am not depressed, its just whenever and I mean: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and sometimes Thursday, I cannot simply fall asleep. Some days it takes an hour and some it takes the whole friggen night. It's like whenever my head hits the pillow, 10 billion thoughts come into my mind and I can't shut em off, sigh*..
So yesterday night I hit the matress at around 11:30 pm. Im tossing and turning, trying to get comfortable, putting one leg out of the blankets and one in the blankets, using my hands as a pillow, and I don't check the time, becuase I know it will probably be like 2 hours later. Its really frustrating. I am cursing God, throwing pillows and blankets across the room and the next thing ya know, I am almost in a state, where I can sleep, but NOOOO, my bladder has to react and I gotta take a mighty ****. Next thing you know, I am going through the same process and by the time I am about to really fall* asleep, which is like 4:30 A.M, the birds start chirpin. Its so loud I try to sleep in the dining room on the floor, the birds still chirp.. Then I head off to the living room on to the sofa, still chirpin...Then the basement..to cold...I go back upstairs and into my room and finally get to sleep at around 5:30...In what feels like 10 minutes, my mom wakes me up at 8:25, 5 minutes before first day of summer school starts..... What... A.. ****... Night...
I really think there is some missing gene link or chromosome in my body that makes me nocturnal, perhaps it was the rat infection I got when I was a baby..(jk)
You know that scene in the movie Insomnia ,where Pacino is going crazy with the lights and trying to cover them completely...It totaly relates to the actual feelings of insomnia..The doctor prescribed me drugs and I can take 2 or more pills and still not fall asleep...it truly sucks the dirt.
chronic insomnia sucks and how I envy people who can sleep properly. Now who else here has this mind eating disorder?

Don't let it get to you. That's what's causing it. And don't sleep during the day if you haven't slept all night - hopefully you'll be tired enough to sleep the next night.
During that evil time of unemployedness, I'd usually go to bed at 2am or so, be tossing and turning until about 5am, then sleep until noon. Wake up, job hunt for most of the afternoon, have supper, go out with friends, then get home. Wash, rinse, and repeat. It eventually got bad - I'd be at the point where I'd be tossing and turning until 8am, sleep for 4 hours, then continue the routine.
Once I started working, things got closer to normal. I now get to bed by midnight, asleep by 1am, wake at 8am.
Anyhow, my point is - once you get into the routine of summer school, your body will adjust accordingly. Long, boring days stuck in a hot classroom will most likely tire you out quickly, and you'll be dropping by the time 10pm comes around. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

alright heres what i Did and still do when i cant sleep, i think of a girl i reallly like and i think happy thoghts lik(when eyes r closed) going out on a date, turned out it went bad when i brought Cara to club, err she grinded with other guys, dumped me a few days later but.. err enough of that well i think happy thought s AND the ONE way u WILL never fall asleep is by trying to fall asleep, i have a fan that is kinda loud and i use that sound to ease me, also if your a guy think of hot girls or hot thoughts and err, ull be tired afterwards , trust me <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
Every since high school finished (2years ago), I have been an isomniac and so has my best friend. We have tried everything, tried exercising together, eating properly. We have tried have a set scheduale we got jobs during the day. Then we got late shift jobs. It didnt matter.
Finally we just gave up. We figured it we couldnt sleep we would do something with the time. So an early nite for me is 2am now and the latest i am out of bed on a weekday is 7am. Cant sleep so i read, or i play ns, workout, catch up on uni/work, run a website etc (anything short of watching tv: damn tv is mind numbingly stupid).
I think its got to the point that we both just dont need much sleep. The only thing that annoys me is the fact that the sleep i get isnt very good. Its always disturbed. Even the gf gets used to you getting up shortly after you both go to bed and not coming back for a couple of hours.
Your life gets used to it. I no longer see it as a negative thing. Craming for exams is a breeze, partying all nite three nights in a row doesnt matter. Driving long distances (and in Australia any distance is a long one. Driving from Brisbane is to Sydney is 1200km.), etc.
One thing that did work. I found this out as a side effect, i wasnt looking for it. I find if i smoke... the other kind of... Well if i get stoned i sleep fine. I dont suggest this or condone it, it depends how bad your insomnia is and how it effects your life.

The reason is that the adrenaline still in your system just after the exercise will keep your mind awake, even though the body is exhausted. You may very well fall asleep after crashing to the bed/floor, but your mind won't truly rest until the adrenaline is out of your system.
Basically, your body would get more rest while your mind gets less. Fortunately, many people can function quite well on less than 4 hours of actual sleep.
Better 5 minutes (usually how long it takes before I sleep) than 5 hours =)
I remember my brother used to 'nap' for 4 hours. Don't know how he did it, but he did it all the time, even accidentally. "I'm going to do some homework, play Battlefield for an hour, then eat, then take alittle nap, wake me up at 9." So he does homework on his bed for a bit, finishes, and then he's knocked out cold. I poked him with a stick, once, saying, "OW! MEDIC!" hoping to wake him up. No luck, though. I have to ask him how he did that...

I try to watch it, but my mom has some BS with sleeping. She makes me go to sleep at 10... I'm 15 for ****s sake!
Your brain uses all sorts of triggers to get things done. This ranges from your heart rate to your breathing to sleep. It also controls how hard your brain is allowed to work on things. After (or during) meditation, kinda just pay attention to how things feel in your body. Then, suck in your breath really quickly. You'll feel triggers for a heart rate jump (why this is, I really dunno). Relax and try it a couple of times. Then, if you feel like you have a good feeling for your trigger, try to use it on its own. Practice at things like this, until you can do it without being so focused.
Triggers come naturally with practice; you find ways to feel them out. Just keep at it.
Ok, my success stories (without them I wouldn't even post this). I can keep my heart rate horrendously slow while on rollercoasters, and remember every loop and turn for about a week. I went from an A- student at school with boatloads of studying to an A/A+ student without studying AT ALL. Sleeping is both more relaxed and comes quicker, I'm at about six hours focused for every nine normal I get (man, that's my favorite part!). I can multitask like a mofo and oddly enough, am becoming ambidexterous (dunno if this is related). And for relavance to NS, my brain is usually two or three steps ahead of the marines (both combat and map-related). This brings teh pwn <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

heh, I also do meditation, but i started meditating cos of my martial arts training
anyway, yeah, I do feel that meditation does allow me to be calmer, more focused, think clearer, and most of all, sleep better. but instead of looking for "triggers", i focus on a repetitive action like breathing, or when i can concentrate better, a single point on the body (this is harder as I find the mind tends to wander more). The trick is to learn to focus without thinking (wu wei, or effortless action as the Chinese say), or to be aware of something without having any thoughts about it (like its origins, its speed, etc). Soo............yea i think im going too OT here....hahaha

About my triggers, I did start off with my own heartbeat. Man, what a hard start, but once I got it down, I was set. Now it's like, ok body shut off, and it goes to sleep. The brain's a little harder though...
