The Scoreboard

who needs it?
Many many times before I've seen skulks on my team holding back a perfect attack or backing me up because of their 'score'. Constantly I find aliens so concious of their score that they will be very cautious and not work with the team. At times yes being cautious could be very useful but when your assaulting the marine base it isn't helpful to run all the way back to the hive. Usually when I attack the rine base I don't stop untill im dead unless there is an army of dcs right outside the door. In the long run, most people have a negative score by the end of the game anyways. In my oppinion, you could simply unbind that tab button unless you want to know who the gorge is. But if you been playing for longer then 10 minutes and don't know where and who your gorge is you're completley lost.

That reminds me of that child commercial... It's 11:00 PM. Do YOU know where your gorge is?

the kills/deaths thing was brought over from plain half life Deathmatch and I really don't think its fitting for NS... there are things you can do that are far more important than killing a marine. Sacrificing yourself to take down a turret factory leaving a hive lockdown totally vulnerable for an attack, even things as simple as tagging every marine you see with a parasite are so much more important than killing a marine that will just respawn 10 seconds later at the cost of zero resources.

all scores except teamscores should be removed imho,

NS is a TEAM game and I am always more than happy to lob my skulkish self into some mines so the other 7 guys can rush through the doors and annihilate the opponents *evil laughter*

    Cheers

I think it would be cool if it showed how much res you have cost your team/the enemy.

    Killing a RT +22
    Killing Vanilla Marine +1
    Killing a HA/GL marine +58
    Dying as a skulk -1
    Dying as a fade -54

At least then fragwhores would have a more proper incentive for team-oriented actions, instead of as now, just frags. Also, it would give "credit" to more important, but not as spectacular, actions such as chomping RT's and other structures.

Um, I think thats why they are taking the scores for Aliens out in 1.1 :-p

But we're trying to encourage score freaks to take a dive and forget about their score so they can do some more TEAMWORK. So shhh

Imho: deaths should be removed, kills added for destroying buildings. Competitiveness is fun

I like the idea of giving points for destroying buildings and what-not. I think it would definitely encourage the "points-freaks" to help out in the game.

Agreed. But that would also encourage score freaks to destroy useless buildings just for the points rather than attacking more important areas. Such as a skulk finds a lonely rine rt and decides to waste his time killing it because he needs more wammy on his score rather than attacking the small and growing siege base right outside the hive.

That's a good point. I suppose it all comes down to having a little faith in your fellow players. I tend to just try and stick to the (oft-repeated on these forums) rule, "Play on servers you know and trust." If you are a regular on a server you'll know what sorts of people play there.

Obviously no score system would show the *true* worth of a player, but I think my proposed model would come a lot closr then the current one.

Or even... the marine commander could award points to players that he thinks have accomplished something, or points could be awarded to people who complete their waypoints automatically.

Same thing with the gorge or something :/

Rather than the commander issuing the points they should be issued automatically, the comm has far too much on his plate quite often. I think building structures should give you points too. No-one remembers the marine who builds the spawn whilst everyone else runs off to get the hive or something... err... yeah.

I agree that scores should be left, but deaths should be removed

In UT its like that, you don't worry how many time you sacrafice your life, as long as you kill some one.

I think NS 1.0 wanted that but they forgot to take off deaths :/

A lot of people seem to think that having the scoreboard present only negatively impacts the alien team. I think the scoreboard is an important and effective motivational tool. For instance, I'll often start a game off really slow, say 1 kill / 5 deaths, then feel a little embarassed when I see how low I am on the scoreboard. This motivates me to refocus my efforts and I usually end up playing much better from that point on, benefiting my team in the process.

I'm not saying that a player's kill count is the ultimate indicator of performance. Nonetheless, its importance as an indicator cannot be overlooked. I think it should be left in AND paired with some of the other suggestions in this thread. Removing kill counts entirely because of some contrived correlation to teamplay is ridiculous and overly reactionary. Perhaps if it was no longer the only listed indicator of performance, people would not worry about it as much.

Yes but in this case it doesn't always encourage players to do betters like it does for you. My complaint is they worry about their score so much they'll attack marines instead of working with the team. And usually if their score is low they leave or continuously try raising their score by simply just killing marines and only marines which equals even LESS teamwork.
