Well, flayra, if you really want to develop this and its hard to see how you might do so, there is a game i point out to you. Its called Darkspace. Its a spacey game, and if you pay(gah) it has a cahin of servers called the metaverse. These are a bunch of about 20 different servers which are all linked and you can fight eachother in. I think that this approach would be a good one, as you could ask peole if you could link their servers toghther, and then you could travel from ship to ship and all kinds of funky stuff.

It also has a nice way of organsising and ranking people.

www.darkspace.net
thats the adress for this game, i suggest you check it out.

Space combat is always tiring to me. Very little depth due to lack of environmental effects and obstacles.

Have you seen freelancer yet? More or less goes against all your views then <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> Personally I didn't like the game, but it was still some fun for a little while.

Also, I'm not quite so sure what you're trying to say erendor.. ? That flay should copy this game? Or what... What should he check out! <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Last time I checked the focus of DarkSpace wasn't the combat though. While it's space-themed, the game is entirely 2D, like Starfleet Command, you can't go up or down. So the only way to win a fight is having the better ship, which boils down to spending your entire life levelling up in the metaverse and get access to the dreadnoughts. That's the downfall of all persistent-world games: the characters are persistent too, and the only way to stay competitive is playing 24/7.

The only games of DarkSpace I found enjoyable were non-persistent scenarios. They reminded me of Netrek, and while they last quite a while too, at least everyone starts with the same ship and equal chances.

That would be rather interesting being able to warp between servers and keep the same score etc..

i'm not saying hat he should copy it, of course not! I'm just saying he could be...<i>'infulenced'</i> by the way it set up its servers. What i was trying to say is that if he is aiming to create a on-going battle type of thing like he says here, then darkspace has a pretty neat way of doing it adn he sohuld look at their server setup and soforth.

and it'd work too, it'd be just like EQ and what not, reach a "portal" then go to console again, connect to other server (automatically)

So rather than individual servers, it's a massive network somehow?

Sounds sweet. Not sure how it'll work, but sounds sweet.
