I started playing on Nov 1st, because I forgot it was coming out on Halloween, and that after months of looking forward to it, too <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->.

I think 1.00 was my favourite, if only for the fond memories I have of NS's initial "wow" factor, and it being basically just my CS/DoD clan and people we knew from those games on the few servers in the UK, all finding our way through this strange new game together, all quoting <i>Aliens</i> wherever possible, and all discovering all the cool and funny things for the first time together. And of course, all the done-to-death tactics and DMS hadn't been set in stone back then (movement would always be the last to get built even, becasue it looked useless).

No lameness - just a bunch of mates having a very good laugh.

ahhh 1.0 good ole res exploit at the beginning of the game to get the aliens 100+ res every 2 seconds. I'd put up the two hives in the first 2 minutes of the game as a <!--emo&::gorge::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/pudgy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pudgy.gif'><!--endemo--> and everyone would be like WTH HAX!!!

I can still remember that day. I was in the #ns channel waiting for release. Nobody knew what was going on and all the channels said diffrent things ( there was like #ns1 , #ns2, #ns3 ect ) one channel said it was released but the offical 'moderated' #natural-selection said it wasent. So much confution, and then the download links started to be leaked. The first source they managed to close down but when blyeyonders download links started to be leaked it couldent hold and so it was released 5 minutes after that.

sometime in november, i think it was 1.02 when i was playing. a few weeks i introduced it to my friend who runs 2iD with me, we then shut down the tfc server and put up the ns server. Hasnt changed from that moment.

(I read about the game summer of 2002, but it was getting really bad reviews all over so i never jumped on till that night... <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Same, would have started the moment it came out if it wasn't for me being forced to take the dog for a walk...

Most 1.0 alien players "evolved"(developed better skills) quicker than is normal due to the massive unbalance(resource bug among other stuff), so when 1.01 came out marines whined a LOT on the forums...

I started about 2 or 3 days after release.. I'd never heard of it until then. My roommate installed it on my computer and I was like WTH is this? We played some LAN games of it in the dorm and then started joining internet servers...

    And look at me now <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/nerd.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd.gif'><!--endemo-->

Samhain (Hallowe'en), 2002. Easy to remember, as I ended up staying home on my birthday to play it. Best present ever. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

As for my favorite.. I can't remember if it was v1.02 or v1.03 that had the perma-cloak bug. Believe it was 1.02... 1.03 was the stopcommandermode cheat.
I'm of course referring to going back and playing 'setup' games, where there's one Alien and eight Marines. Marines allow the Alien to tech up to three-Hive, build up all his Chambers (sensories just outside the Marine base) then go Fade, get full upgrades, and cloak as they destroy everything. He's invisible for the rest of the game (if your SCs got destroyed while you were cloaked, you STAYED cloaked, even while moving and attacking). No Ping-Of-Death, so the Fade only had one life against all the Marines.
The objective of the game? Take out as many Marines as possible. Marines, kill the Fade without spamming... either grenades, HMG, or turrets everywhere. It's LOADS of fun, even now.

About three months ago but it only became my main online game a couple of weeks ago because it took a long time for me to put CS down.

The fire flickers in the hearth, the wind howls by the window. An old man sits in the corner, smoking his pipe. Children sit before him, looking eagerly at him, expectingly.

"Tell it again, Grandad, tell it again!". "All right, all right!" he cries before chuckling. "Gave an old man a moment to think will you!"

He clears his throat and begins to speak.

"Twas many years ago, when I was young, not as young as you of course but still young. In fact it was the 31st of October, 2002. About 8 o'clock at night (GMT <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> ) if I remember correctly. In those days I only had a 600K broadband connection, not the peta connections of today. The 20 minutes it took to download NS 1.0 where, and always will be, the longest of my life"

Oooh... it's still painfull to remember how I could have played NS since the beginning if I had a bit more curiosity about that "tactical" mod with a "commander mode" and stuff... thought it was single player , something like a fallout tactics... the thought of a "Kharaa" race never crossed my mind...

Then I found NS when checking the gamespy "mod of the year" poll (ThieveryUT was 3rd) , being quite curious about it : "k , a new HL mod" "k , alien vs marines , cool" "omg , starcraft FPS ! leet" "wow , true marines squads vs sneaky aliens !..."
I used to think that Science&Industry was the best HL mod and Thievery the best mod of the world. Now , Thievery is still the best UT mod so far , but NS is obviously the best mod of the world.

i've been playing since the very beginning. i had heard about the mod ages before but i thought it would never be completed just like so many other mods so i forgot about it but then when i heard release was imminent i started watching the site very intensely. i think i got it actually on the day it was released but i couldn't play it coz nobody else had got it also so i had nobody to play with. in the beginning there wasn't even skulk rushes and marines didn't go straight to securing hives; they slowly crept through the map taking all the res nozzles on their way building up a base at each nozzle.

i played marines exclusively for the first few weeks coz i wanted to be the one being terrorized like in the Aliens films. then i tried aliens finally and thought it was so much funner coz i didn't have to yell every 5 seconds for someone to weld me. Fade was my absolute favourite, i felt like the alien from the film alien coz i was massacring like the entire crew without getting killed. i was unstoppable. much later i started liking the Lerk alot and i still have barely ever been an Onos. i was maybe Onos one time or two times where i actually killed anything and i've been playing like everyday since the first release. Fade is just so good to me and the times i always said "oh let me just go Onos just to see what it is like" the game ends with us winning before i even finish evolving to Onos. i guess i just like being able to kill things by shooting them coz i like to show off my aim. now for 1.1 i'm quite upset about the fade not getting shoot ability till very late and i'm upset about the lerk offense and defense being weakened. i like the HMG cone being made tighter though; maybe i can use that to show off my aim now. and the thing i'm most looking forward to in 1.1 by far is the muzzle flash not blinding me anymore while i fire.

A week after release. My stupid comp had to screw up a few days before release. Argh. No matter. A few days wont matter much <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->. I remember the first game i played was on Bast, Aliens in Refinery, Marines somehow were spawning there too. Ran around biting blindly cuz' i didnt know my brightness had to be 45 to actually see anything. My first kill was against Germs. Refinery died. Gorge swam to Feed (no timer). Waited there for hive, marines had no clue where he was. I still remember what he said. "All right guys, get ready to spawn." And we did. Ah the memories... I have come to make Bast my favourite map. And Aliens my fav. <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='skulk.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::gorge::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/pudgy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pudgy.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::lerk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/lerk.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='lerk.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::fade::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/fade.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='fade.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::onos::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tiny.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tiny.gif'><!--endemo--> PWNZ <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::siege::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/siege.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='siege.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Halloween baby! With the res system all funky, troops of HA/GL's marching around obliterating everything in sight with the GL. I played aliens from the start because I knew that they were going to fix the res system and all the people piling up onto the marines side would be crying when 1.01 came out and they had no idea about the alien side of the game.

Oooh.. bad memories of 1.0 coming... 6 clip GL's, high damage, high radius, high ROF... skulks running away from the clink clink clink of grenades, one of the dreaded sounds besides turret farms singing, skulks attempting to take shelter in the vents like refugee's but still getting blasted to ickle bits by the grenades... ahhhh the memories...
