The Opposite Team Always Seems So Powerful?

When I play NS I always get a feeling that the opposite race I am playing is super-powerful!

When playing as marine against a skull, he runs at me, I keep shooting and then I die... when I play as the alien, I die before I even get to the enemy !!!
When I ran at a fader I shoot and shoot and shoot and die... and when playing as a fader, a single turret or marine can kill me easily...

is it just my obsession or what? any good tips for me? and is there any recoil in NS, I've seen some people burst-shooting and wondered if there's really a point in it...

There is hardly any recoil in NS (if any). To survive just be more careful. Listen for alien footsteps so you get them before they get you. As a fade try not to get to close until you get good because nowadays the marines chase fades. I admit I get that feeling as well. I fire loads of acids bombs but the marines just keep on coming. Yet when I'm a marine they kill me in like two hits lol.

Learning the in's and out's of NS helps tons.
Here are some tips: as alien you can take usually around twice as much damage when you upgrade carapace (when the gorge builds defence chambers, use your right click menu, go to upgrades > defence chamber > carapace). Also, never make head on assaults against marines as skulk cuz you will always die. Also, memorize the ventilation systems of each map, you can use them to your advantage by getting where you want to go quicker, dropping down on the enemy's head, and coming from behind. Find an area where the marines are likely to pass by, then find somewhere on the cieling where they won't see you if they walk by, then when they do hold your duck key to drop on their heads and chomp away. Also bunny hop like hell when alien.

As marine, pick optimal situations. Find area's where you have long narrow corridors to defend against. Make sure to take note of vents. Crouch when defending, this way you usually only have to worry about aiming left to right and not up and down as well.

The point on burst-shooting is not to waste the entire load on one tiny doggie (skulk).

they say "a big army is nothing without a good commander" well......thats what i say any way.

But my point is this, at first, unless your going up against someone with the same or less skill than you, or you dont have team mates backing you up, your most probably going to lose but the more and more skill you get you will start to think that the other team is always weaker than you, but dont evelve, into all things evil and threatining to the mrines and mankind,a , becuas in a world of

High rooms (refinery on ns_bast, holo room on ns_hera) are your friends, you can hide on the ceiling, and the marines usually won't notice you unless they look up (which they don't as they concentrate more on the floor where skulks might be running up to them). Dark corners are your friends, use them as camouflage. Nooks are your friends, tuck yourself away and wait 'till a marine walks by and you got yourself a free meal. Be the sneaky ****. Use your speed to outflank your opponents (there are a bunch of crates on hera in the corridor leading to holo, if you are on the backside of them and then walk up to the top just before a marine passes by, he won't see you and you're now behind him) and attack them from behind if possible.

Not JUST that - guns suffer from hardly any recoil, but their accuracy does go down a lot over extended shooting. Try shooting at something eaily seen from a distance away with an HMG. Unload your clip into it. Then go over to it - you will see bullet marks all around it in a huge area. Now try doing it while firing in bursts - much more accurate, yeah? When I shoot up an OC I always make sure I fire in bursts because every single shot counts.

WTH, no it doesnt, you thinking of cs. now youre gonna make me go test this....

i always thought the purpose of burst shooting was so that you dont lost your target, the white flash a LMG makes is much larger than his body, and to keep a good target on him you should stop and look around every once in a while.

As far as I know, there's no recoil on any weapons. When you click the fire button, it defines a cone of X degrees, and sends the bullet to a random point in that cone (Actually, I'm sure it works a bit differently, but that's one way of thinking of it). Doesn't matter if it's the first bullet in a burst, or the last as you unload your entire clip...

The advantage in burst fire does, indeed, come from the visual side. It's hard to keep your aim right on, when you're trying to see through that huge muzzle flare (Or whatever you call it)...

Of course, those of us who came here from CS (Yes, I played the evil game for quite a long time before coming hopelessly bored of it) are used to crouching and firing in bursts, so we tend to do that in NS too... Old habits are hard to break...

Best advise I can give is to always stay in groups as a marine and folow your comms orders, this way you will be more likely to be rewarded for your efforts with better guns and other upgrades.

You have already learned that charging as a skulk brings certain death, so nows the time to try some other tatics. Hang around with other skulks and try and setup ambushes, most players will appreciate and pay back the favor if you let them hide whilst you parisite and lure the other marines out. Talk and type as an alien and try and get some tactics happening, don't be reactive and wait for an alien attack, get some team mates together and go on the offensive. Also make sure you play as the other classes and learn how to use Lerk and Onos. Too many players go Fade and have seen many a 2 hive alien side go down due to bad organisation and no depth from the aliens. 3 fades, 1 gorge (healing) and 1 lerk (umbra) is a much better attacking force than 5 fades.

    Stick with it.

Seriously. It's very normal for you to feel how you feel. A good marine has uncannily good aim; a good skulk can dodge bullets effortlessly. That means a bad skulk gets gunned down by a marine with excellent aim, and a bad marine can't land a single round on a good skulk.

Keep in mind that kharaa has a far higher learning curve than marines. You can learn to aim from many other games; there are very few games where you can learn the melee skills necessary to playing kharaa well.

Anyway, practice is one thing but there's a lot of theory to cover (especially if you want to play gorge). There are some good guides to playing the various alien classes effectively lurking around the kharaa strategy forum (somewhere) and there are undoubtedly stuff on marines in the frontersman strategy forum. Here's a shameless plu... *cough* link to a post I made about melee combat ages ago. If each bullethole would be on the exact location of impact it would mean the server has to send all that information to the player (client), taking up all the bandwidth.
Instead, the bulletholes are generated randomly client-side.

There is NO recoil whatsoever. The first bullet will go somewhere within the cone of the weapon, NOT dead on which is what happens in CS. The second bullet will fall independently of the first, still in the cone around your crosshair.

Pistol shots are 100% accurate to your crosshair.
It doesn't matter how long you fire for, there is no difference in the chance of bullet X landing in spot Y. The bullets will fall randomly within the cone that can be drawn between your gun, your crosshair (eg on the wall in front of you), and the edges of a circle of set size (dependent on weapon) around your gun (so the further you shoot, the larger the spread at the end of the bullet path, naturally).

Burst fire helps if you lose track of your target, as it helps you see what you're shooting at, nothing more.

Advice for the game, keep playing. Get carapace. Never go alone anywhere (on either team, aliens need as much teamwork as marines!) (you can get away with going off on your own more as an alien, but it's more effective to work in a group in general).

I was a big FPS mod fan, games like Q3: Navy Seals Covert Operations, True Combat, Urban Terror
    HL: Sven Co-Op, CS ( ), S&I
Plus other games like RTCW, these games helped my Skills as a Frontiersmen
but the one game I found helped me the most as a Kharaa beast, is the game
    AvP2
If you can get use to playing upside down and jumping as an alien in that game, you gan play as a Kharaa alot better, but it takes alot of practise.

Just keep with it, take the advise thats stated here the most!

If your opponent always seems better than you, then you just suck, that's all. Keep playing and you'll get better.

As for CS...it's all about who you play with. Play with idiots who don't follow the objectives and you're definitely not gonna have much fun.

*shrug* I always hunt alone. I usually get killed if I'm attacking a marine with another skulk because they invariably get in my way. Attacking installations is another matter entirely, though.

Don't forget that you are the melee king (as you say), attacking in packs is helpful for most people. When I'm suddenly all alone as a marine (usually because my group was slaughtered) and a pack of three skulks attacks, I eat my cyanide pill.

I am fairly sure that those bullet holes dont actually represent where the bullet hits and are just fairly random, although I may be wrong, perhaps an enlightened one could clear this up?

Hmm well could be, but i do not think so.
I've been playing ns from the very start, and shooting in
bursts does work, you may test it, have fun.

    Sinspawn and Phaze:

Please do not use coloured or resized text on the forums, the reason being it (arguably) contravenes the Rules before you joined the forum and is very annoying to have to try to read.

Burst fire DOES help you to get your aim, but that's all it does, stops the muzzle flash momentarily to allow to better vision (helps you to track the enemy). If you can still see (or at least guess well) where the enemy is behind your muzzle flash (takes a bit of time but you'll get there), then burst fire becomes less useful. It has NO effect on accuracy of the weapon whatsoever though.

Hmmm , the only effective use of burst fire I can see is saving ammo (which I find quite ironical from armory humpers) but when you have 2-3 skulks charging you it's better to hold down fire then switch to pistol and fire as many rounds as possible before you die.

Since the HMG has an insane clip size , you might want to hold down fire when encountering the smallest kharaa too.

On the other hand , the shotgun and GL have to be timed to be effective , hold fire when shooting the hive/WoLs or slow targets.

The skulk dies in two shotgun shots right? no matter what... i think
i was venting with jetpack and i saw a skulk that didt notice me, i sneaked up behind it and blasted away two and a ½ shots at it, and it just turned around and bit me twice and me dead!
