Living in France. And liking NS.
Do you have any access to LAN Magazine and their issues number 7, featuring NS on the cover? Their website is here:

http://www.lan-magazine.com/

Babelfish does a very bad translation of French (the idiomatic wording on gaming websites especially), so from what I can tell, it says it's on sale at newstands for 2€.

This was pointed out to me by the excellent website:

http://www.ns-fr.com

Anyone who could purchase a copy of this and scan it in (then perhaps give a quick translation?) would be my super hero.

I can't tell you about the french one but about a German one... They only gave it a 78% (www.gamestar.de) But i guess this was because it was the 1.0 version of the game

Allthough a 78% is pretty good with the GS (black and white got about 81% ^^ )

The Gamestar report was bad and they got lots of trouble with me because of this. Now they read http://www.natural-selection.de and use the information of the page to improve their reports and it seems to work very well

Finnish gaming magazine Pelit(largest in the nordic countries) gave ns 1.0 88/100 and [Pelit recommends]-stamp when 1.0 came out. Stop talking about Pickelhauben please... we don't like 'em either, they are prone to blowing our ballons up (go watch "Those Incedible Men in Their Flying Machines" before you ask me what I'm talking about). And they smell of Kaiserzeit.
Forget Babelfish anyway, until we get A.I., no internet translator will be anywhere near good (used to amuse me endlessly when my schoolmates wrote their homework for english in german and used babelfish to translate it - "WTH do we get so bad grades??" ).

Yea, the Gamestar coverage was rotten, although we nonetheless managed to blow Hegemonia (same issue) out of the water. Anyway, I'm not really sure whether we should pay too much attention to the opinion of a badly written, bootlegging print mag.

Let it be known that I will not tolerate such crap anymore. Clanhunter, one more such remark, and you'll have to search for a new place to dump your stereotypized, unreflected notions.

Well, from what I can remember of my French, the little summary of the article on the magazine's website is quite complimentary - "A new vision of games online." The article on Finnish gaming magazine, Pelit about NS 1.0 Dread mentioned. I had some spare time and made a very quick translation of it. Now, you understand that this is copyrighted stuff, translation doesn't change that and technically, I shouldn't do this. However, I'm not sure they would mind.

I've replaced sub-headlines with numbers as they had puns too difficult to translate. I'd like also to remind that the largest gaming magazine of Scandinavia that Dread mentioned means ~40 000 subsrcibing or buying and 150 000 reading. In terms of size, Pelit is easily the world's largest gaming magazine when compared to its market of ~5 000 000 people. It's been published since 1992 and has a very good reputation in the gaming field. Reviewer is without any exaggeration the Grand Old Man of Finnish gaming magazine scene and one of the two founding members of the magazine itself.

QUOTE

Is the apocalypse upon us when Pelit voluntarily reviews a Half-life mod? Hopefully not so I can play Natural Selection a bit more.

In Natural Selection space soldiers (frontiersmen) face out space bugs (kharaa). The mod incorporates a real time strat? with a shooter and the end result pleases me a lot.

RTS has been added to the game surprisingly well. Both sides build classic bases that consist of respawnportals, defenses, upgrade facilities that allow new abilities and equipment and finally resource gatherers.

    1.

Frontiersmen are classic space marines and the bane of jazzmen: no one plays solos as the orchestra does as the leader says. Or you die. Commander isn?t optional and someone really has to sit down in the console and look after his crew, because in the start of the game soldier has only a light machinegun and 50 rounds of ammo (plus pistol and knife). Respawning can only be done when the commander builds portals and more ammo requires an armory.

Commander who is limited only to his map view can build, or more truthfully, place buildings on the field and the soldiers build them. Other usual business like better weapons, armor and ammo depend only on how skillful and nice natured the commander is. Good commander doesn?t keep resources molding on the account and shares his troops medpacks and better weapons without asking.

Marines are not given personal glory, no scores or kills. Only the benefit of the team and final victory matter something. That?s the spirit. Final victory is very close when marines in heavy armor and armed with heavy machineguns make minced meat out of aliens. Before that aliens get their headache from the automatically firing turret farms that marines eagerly set up.

    2.

Players who look for looser discipline, choose kharaa, but there isn?t much room for solos in their shells either. Basic warrior of the kharaa is the skulk with a deadly bite that can depending on the resource points, evolve into new evolutions. The most important of these is the builder gorge that sets up defenses, resource towers and other buildings of the hive.

The fast skulk is in skilled (but not in mine) hands lethal and when you add extra speed or invisibility, marine is in trouble. The real shock troopers are large mantis-like Fades and flying Lerks. Kharaa can upgrade their abilities and see their enemies even through walls.

Objective of the Kharaa is to set up three hives into specifically determined locations. Each hive opens up new steps on the ladders of evolution and the third hive makes the bells toll for marines. After that kharaa learn how to evolve into Onos. Onos is a giant bulllike biological tank that knocks over marines and their equipment like city mayor culturally historical buildings.

    3.

You don?t see a mod this professional and polished often. It looks very good (in Half-life scale) and it has a interface more polished than the M3-knife of a paranoid paratrooper. It's no surprise the makers are game programmers, professional graphic artists and other pros.

Number of servers increasesall the time and they are constantly full. It?s actually bit of a wonder since for normal internet gamer that is used to running into his favorite camping spot in de_dust, Natural is clearly too hard to swallow and usually in (full) public servers, quality of the game is thrown with a dice. However, they offer also surprisingly good game and the clueless NSPlayers with their constant whining are entertaining.

Snakes of the paradise are rather small. Some of the maps are too mazelike and large when compared to the number of players. Sometimes matches freeze into long trench warfare. On the other side Natu has a thick and slippery anti-idiot tefloncoating. Because the mod doesn?t offer egofood for fraghunters, teamkillers or even cheaters, players behave better than usual. I hope the strict line doesn?t slip in the future in the favor of more audience.

Biggest downside (aside than a bad comm) are The Irreplaceable Superplayers, who whine all the time for better weapons, armor and jetpacs in the phase of the game when resource points should be used for more important projects. Special notion must be given to the Mr. Nothings who change sides in the endgame on the winning team. Well done, little heroes!

Naturally, after this review Natural Selection?s value will change. Pelit-magazine is commonly known to be responsible for among other things for the invasion of idiots in Counter-Strike. Luckily Natural Selection at least in theory should be able to resist de-evolution into a stupid shooter for regular Joes.

Darwinists have fun since in the evolution of mods, Natural Selection gives new life to the Half-life dinosaur while the new quick mammals a?la Quake III and the new Unreal are still wondering where their grade A mods are.

Niko Nirvi, published originally in Pelit 12/2002 page 77.

The remark about Pelit being responsible for Counter-Strike llama infestation is due to the amount of criticism Pelit got for doing articles about CS. Apparently, some people felt that it's because of these articles that CS got so big and inevitably, llama infested. Naturally, they are talking about the Finnish scene but even so, it's rather retarded way of thinking.
