Kick Joining

Does your admin kick join?
Kick joining = Kicking someone when the server is full so you can join.

ok admins, post whether you practice this or not. The Mr Men (clan/server) admins will use HLSW to ask if someone is idling in ready room before kicking. Otherwise they wait.

First of all, I watch the chat, and if someone insults someone else, then they are gone. Then I ask to see if anyone is idling. Then I ask to see if anyone is leaving soon, or if the game is ending soon (so as not to kick people just as they are about to win, which is a bit mean really). If not, I ask who is the current commander. Then I roll a 16-sided (virtual) dice, and kick that number player, unless he/she is the commander, in which case I roll again.

The admins of my regular usually ask if theres any idlers. If so they get kicked and the admin joins.

If not they usually just password it so they're guaranted a slot when someone leaves. Then when the server starts getting empty we wonder why till the admin realises he never took the PW off

The problem with random kicking is the kicked person doesn't know why he/shes been kicked and you may have a substantial amount of res invested in you when you get kicked.

However as long as its in the server message I have no objection to it.

yeah i also watch the chat, i will even ask if someone is afk. if someone is misbehaving or afk i will kick them then join. otherwise i will wait in line until someone leaves.

what bout the simple, one reserved slot that removes (A- person connected shortes ammt of time, or B-Person with highest ping)

Personaly i much prefer a than b.

When I wasn't admin and I was kicked on servers, I hated it. Therefore we don't on our server. One server kick joined all the time, the name of the server will remain protected, although they have 'no time for muppets'. They did have it pointed out in welcome screen though.
• noelephantnoelephant Join Date: 2003-02-13 Member: 13518Members
Autokick, its best to try to avoid servers that have it.

I've been auto kicked as:

1) Commander

2) Our teams sole gorge.

Once I was our sole gorge, two res away from putting up our first resource tower and got auto kicked. That can't be good for the team.
• CutterJoeCutterJoe Join Date: 2002-12-30 Member: 11594Members, Constellation
Yes auto kicking and random kicking is kind of cruel. I know its your server but we are there to have fun and we had to wait in line to play. We dont want to be kicked 3 mins into the game without so much as a warning. I mean if you ask for a spot before you start kicking I would gladly give mine up for an admin if he would just let me know before he starts kicking everyone in site

Random kicks are ONLY in the rarest circumstances. Normally people are nice enough to tell the admin if they are leaving. To put this in perspective, out of all the times I have joined the server, I have kicked twice, and thouroughly explained and apologised before doing so. AND it explains it all in the server welcome message.

What would you rather I do, kick the person with the lowest ping? Or who has been playing the shortest time? I remember being a HPB, playing the game itself is hard enough, without being kicked all the time. And people who have just joined and started to enjoy themselves shouldnt be cast out just as they start to get their groove on.

megadeath, there is no random kick on my server. I operate 4 reserved slots so that admins can join and play WITHOUT disturbing play. Sometimes there are too many admins on, and I can't even join my server, in which case (and it is VERY rare, so you're unlucky it happened to you) I phone up one of the other admins and ask them to random kick someone. They're in a better position to do so than me.

At the end of a day, when a server is very busy and you only get to play 2 nights a week like me, I'd rather risk upsetting one person once than sit waiting for the 3 hours a week I get free to get onto the machine sat by my left knee...

The other alternative I use sometimes is to announce on the server console that I'm coming in and would anyone mind leaving. That often works too, which is nice.

Before anyone gets the wrong idea, I DO care that the regulars on my server (and yes I've seen you on a lot megadeath) get a decent game, hence the high level of adminning.

If I kick someone on our server it's very rare, it would mean all the reserve slots are used up and this has only happened once. We have logmod installed on our server so you can see through HLSW who is comm/gorge etc. I recommend all servers who kick players to install this.

sorry roob for bringing your server up as an example. I wasn't kicked by you but by someone else and i remember you saying to read the welcome screen when i reconnected to ask why i was kicked.

However, i totally agree that with your limited time you shouldn't have to wait. However I bet most people have lots more time and still kick more.

Edit -

I have realised now that I am not going to get the balance of discussion I wanted from this topic. Those servers' admin out there that do exercise random kick joining (and they are out there in their douzens) aren't going to own up. Those that have replied have tended to be those who care about their players. Don't be fooled, they are out there and please don't support them by going back.

As for kick join, i dont and wont kick anyone unless they are disruptive or idle in rr.
The same goes for the rest of the Mr.Men admin
Everyone deserves to play, regardless of ping and time on server... i was 56K for years
and it felt like i was always first to be kicked to make room for admin!

It seems that whenever I am kicked it is because of my ping, which is quite annoying, rude and ignorant. Ignorant because it stems from the fact that most admins still believe the minconception about HPBs lagging servers, which is quite untrue (We barely use any bandwidth and our CPU time is just as much as anyone elses).

I don't like getting kicked so someone can join, but it's more tolerable if it's not because of my connection to the internet.

I just woke up and am too tired to proof-read, all typos care of sleepy eyes.

We use reserves slots on the CoFR server for both admins and regular players. So basically if your not a regular, you stand a chance of being kicked at any time the server is full.

Personally I check what stage the game is at before joining, and I do all the other things mentioned in previous posts ie. looking for idlers in the ready room, kicking a disruptive player etc.

I have tried to coach some of the regulars players to at least look at what the scores are first before they attempt to join, however some of them don't seem to contemplate the disruption that can occur when you kick a player mid to end game.

We have had problems with the gore being kicked just prior to building the hive, and also the commander being booted at vital moments.

Using HLSW is not an option atm, since we have a live feed setup to our IRC channels that allow our members to monitor the servers from IRC. So the needs of the many outway the needs of the few. One person logging in from HLSW will kill the live feed to IRC, (although it can be reset), so in general we don't use it.

Our server is pretty popular to play on, and many people still comeback despite the problems that can occur in busy times. I think that if you run a good server, then people will overlook the problem of auto kicking and still attempt to get on. Our answer to the problem is to continue to monitor who are the players that we like to play with (ie. good teamwork, good attitudes) and increase the number of reserve slot holders. Since the majority of the time the gorge or the commander will be a regular player, this alleviates these problems. We now have a fairly extensive list of regular reserve slot players and the majority of the time the server is populated by reserve slotters. This can make it tough for people who only visit occasionally, however the CoFR server is run primarily for CoFR members enjoyment and the needs of our members outway the needs the pub players.

The auto kick, kicks by ping. The highest pinging non reserve slot player is kicked.
• NoClassNoClass Join Date: 2002-11-11 Member: 8207Members
Well reserv slots tend to auto kick to make spots for you. If that's not your thing, there's always the map ns_xxx command. This one instead of changelevel will cut everyone off. So no need to feel guilty by having to actually pick someone.
