How To Become A Mirror ?

Mirror for NS 1.1 release
Hello,

I have a dedicated server that could be used as a mirror for NS1.1 release.
This server is in France, and there are a lot of NS-fans in my country. I can offer them a french dedicated server for their downloads.

How can I contact someone to be in the list of the mirrors ?

Thanx.

I think your best bet would be to PM MonsE. He handles stuff like that if I remember correctly.

I bet they'll have an email address for this stuff. They did for the NS 1.0 release. It shouldn't be too complicated.

Oh, and don't even think about trying unless A)You're connection is insane or B)You hate yourself. We tried to do this at spider gaming, and our servers, webpage, EVERYTHING just STOPPED until we got rid of that file. Imagine that, times 400, when 1.1 is released.

In the same respect, only have a few mirrors and make everyone wait a few days to download If tonso f people hosted and there were like 20-30 mirrors I don't think it would be a huge problem, but otherwise yeah your probably right I bet that server will get tons of hits :O

There was easily over 30 mirrors for v1.0's release, and all but 2 failed (for me at least.) It even caused FilePlanet's public servers to crash.

If you do become a mirror, you should set a cap of transfer rate. A really low cap.

Yes, although you would like to host NS 1.1....bewarned. You'll need a hefty file server like the one @ blueyonder.

Its got 5 bonded gigabit cards to a 10gbps backbone. And don't get me started on the internet hardware

/me requests EvilGrin to host it.

And we all know how much FilePlanet blows. Gah they remind me of microsoft. I remember when FP used to be decent...

Well I think you're right, this is maybe the best way to make the server crash...
But, if I don't appear on the list of mirrors, and I just host the new version for the french visitors, I think I won't have too much problems.

Don't know if NS-Team will accept this... I will contact them anyway.

    Thx for your answers.

just limit how many users can download at once, yeah it sucks trying to connect (unless you have a queue feature, but then you might be looking at overnight download), but a small host is better then a dead host.

Dumb question, but... how can you set a limit actually? If I DO happen to give some bandwidth (that I have currently some extras of), how can I set a limit on this end?

    Fair enough. Consider it done.

For the techie types heres the specs on the Blueyonder FTP server.

    Sun UltraSparc with 10 Cpus
    10x100mbit nics.
10Gbit Backbone. (other stuff on the wire, 2xQuakenet IRC servers, 2xZeus Web servers, 156 Game servers)

Runs Solaris, and the FTP dameon is ProFTPD.

Connections arn't capped, but users connecting from blueyonder IPs get preferential treatment (more CPU time)

Consult your FTP/Web servers user manual

I'd offer some bandwidth, but I fear it would attrat so much attention my server gets shut down, so somehow I think not

    edited April 2003
When CS 1.5/HL1110 was released. The BY FTP was only managing about 20k/client. We had about 5000 concurrent clients at peak. That meant we were doing about 120Mb/sec which I believe isn't too far off the maximum bandwidth for a 1Gbit connection. There was however a noticeable effect on network latency and connectivity. Thusly we've installed some more phat pipes to various places.

Basically, unless you want DoSing of the net, put some bandwidth/max client caps on your server. If you have a low spec machine, you may be better off limiting bandwith at the firewall, to ease up on the CPU time. This might effect your eligibility for 'offical mirror' status though...?

    [Edit: my maths was screwy]
