Hive Relocation

--to the occupied one--
Playing on Scott's house of fun today and we had a couple of funny games. They all involved the whole marine team relocating to within the hive room where the aliens were spawning. we then built a cc and spawn portals. depending on the resistance, then a tf and turrets or just shooting away.

I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this, it seems like a very consistent strategy that would work on any game with at least 8 players per team. It was actually quite fun, even for aliens. Lots of action.

Done it before just for shits and giggles. Ended up actually just killing them as they spawned. Worked out well until someone let one live, then 2, then 3, then our IPS were going down, someone else jumping in comm chair, spending all res on 2 or 3 extra IPS and no welders or mines...
But we managed to win it.

I have seen that happen more than once. And i think it is pretty cheap.
It is almost as boring victory as skulk rush from beginning, when marines can't stop that rush.

And 8 player server or more it is impossible to stop marines from doing that, if they attack together.
In that point, there are probably only few skulks near starting hive and others are running around the map.
Marines kills those skulks and starts to camp in that hive room, while com drops buildings in there.

Spawning skulk without a carapace is really easy to kill. And second skulk comes after 8 second , and again 8 seconds , etc.... until turrets are up or when marines decide to kill the hive by shooting it.

But that strategy depends on the map and the hive. Example: Eclipse hive is pretty easy to defend, but sewer hive is much harder....

Actually, when I did it, it was the Eclipse hive that we pwned. Regardless, it was an interesting strat just to monkey around with. Cheap, but any strat marines use is now classified as cheap, so I gave up on the whole "fairness" thing whenever I command.

Well yea, it is fun if you are in marine side, but for aliens.....you just have to wait for spawning and after that try to run few meters before you die and if you are really lucky you might kill one marine (who will respawn before you do)

Sadly, I've come to discover that playing for fun and playing to win are quite different with respect to the fact that you can have both at some times. I actually did it "for fun" just to see if we could pull it off. It was a hell of a battle for a period of time, but when it comes down to it, the contest was lacking.
There's always gotta be a loser.

lol I did this by accident in caged. I heard skulks in sewer as commander in the start of game so I told my team to relocate to Ventilation. When they go to the vent res it was set up and I realised this was the alien hive. Since all the aliens were ... out for lunch so to say... I build a CC, portals, TF and set up base. We ended up taking that hive out but not after they had got a gorge out and he had got a 2nd hive. They got fades but we took those out and we won in the end.

It was a slow victory since it was a 3v3 game and marines get it hard off then lol

Its a cheap tactic, only because of the way Kharaa spawning works.

relocations cheap, JPs are cheap, welding HAs are cheap, rushing is cheap, turret farms are cheap.

seriously i would love it if people would stop calling strategies cheap just coz they work. hell i could just say that you getting 2 hives is cheap, or getting DCs, or attacking us was cheap because the way marines look.

either say something positive and relative or just Shhhh pls.

The only marine tactics that aren't cheap are the ones that fail.

Nah, those are cheap too

You are right - if it's cheap but working - it's not cheap.
there was a long post about "Playing to win" with an article, search it up.

I think all those tactic are cheap, when game ends after 5 minutes....
• ElvenThiefElvenThief aka Elven Thief (ex. NS Programmer) Join Date: 2002-11-15 Member: 8754Members, Retired Developer, NS1 Playtester, Constellation
Most generally, the marines on pub servers HAVE to win in 5 minutes or they'll get blasted at hive 2. You can either be A) Cheap or B) tech to defend against 2/3 hives.
Most strats are balls out, all or nothing.
Some people keep a backup plan for whenever the cheap tactic fails. I'd personally not allow the aliens to take more than I can let them. It's cheap, but I'd rather my reputation as a competant commander remain true.
I won a game on hera the other day where I ended up sieging out 2 hives almost consecutively. I had an alien sarcastically say "OMG. Just kill off our last hive with another siege, will you?" I just asked if he would rather I jp/hmged it. He shut up.
Everything's cheap, so I gave up the ethics battle of commanding a long time ago.

im glad there are people following my point of view, i had tried to express this "everything's cheap" idea in other threads but i could never say it clearly. aliens whine no matter what a marine does. they call it tech rushing, i call it clicking every availiable icon on the arms lab and armory and proto, etc. its PLAYING THE GAME.

sure killing skulks as they spawn is not fun for the skulks, but remember that they would probably be killing you as they spawn too. if they agreed not to bite for 5 seconds then sure id let them run off, but an alien has no honor.

This rush tactic seems a bit to risky if it fails, but then again, if you don't you will lose because the most marine commander are 100% morons, because they want to take one hive at the time. And when the moron commander thinks his hive is defended good enough, the kharaa are storming them with fades. What is the next thing the comm does? He orders us to capture the middle of the map, wat will 90% fail because the marines will be overwhelmed by the fades. WHen will they learn to just attack their hive with 2 à 3 marines with lmg?
