With Windows XP to get above 60 fps you must turn v-sync off in your video card's settings.
Well, at least I had to.

Paq, are you using 32-bit color in NS? If so, you can running at 16-bit by removing the line -32bpp from your NS shortcut, which will dramatically increase framerates.

I use 16-bit color and my resolution is 1152x864.
It only drops to 10 when there is lots of action, especially if i try to shoot hive with jp/hmg and there are aliens chasing me and few OC's shooting.

My fps is pretty good if there is like 3vs3 situation (fps ~40)

Hmmm, GeForce2 though, if I'm reading your previous posts right. Have you tried dropping down just a hair to 1024x768? Your FPS under load is still a bit too low for that card, honestly. Should be double that at least with a lot of action on screen. Tell me more about your PC, OS, other hardware, etc. I gather you are up-to-date on video drivers.

Once i tryed 1024, but it didn't help much and i like to use 1152 on my desktop so...

    <b><u>Ok, here is some information:</u></b>

Mainboard is EagleTech (or something like that)
    1000 Mhz AMD Athlon T-bird
    256 SDRam (pc133)
    Geforge2 mx400 64Mt + TVOut (<--- i keep that off when i play)
    20Gb hard-drive (7200 rpm)
    DirectX 9.0
    NVidia Detonator v43.45
    Windows 2000

I have v-sync off and i have typed "max_fps 100" in my console.
Oh, and all my models are custom (metallic alien skin pack, morita rifle, death squad, etc..)
    Maybe that is the reason <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo--> With default models fps might be better <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

    AHA!

The NS models were very carefully designed to look high-poly, but actually be quite low-poly; something that is often forgotten (or just not understood) by many users and makers of custom models. Switch back to your previous models if you would please and tell me how it goes.

Plus, you just negated your warranty by using non-NS models! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Heh...

If you want to simply test real fast, rename your NS directory to 'NS.BAK', then install NS from the exe, and copy your config.cfg file over from the NS.BAK directory into your new clean NS directory (or just re-run your NS exe and it will make this backup copy automatically for you). Then connect to a few games and see how it goes for you. Rather than going back and hand-fixing all your models, I mean.

It is better to use Default models from the NS Team standpoint - we can give you tech support for issues with them. If you use custom models of unknown (to us) poly levels and quality, we cannot really tell what the heck is going on with your setup. It's sort of like buying a Mercedes, then replacing the engine with a Pontiac - the mechanics and engineers will no longer be able to help you as expertly...

    I can't get past 60 sometimes either. (Sometimes I can, others I can't).

    Specs:
    1.7GHz Celeron
64mb Intel® Extreme Graphics AGP (its a built-in AGP card though)
    512mb DDR ram
DirectX 9 (It says 8.1, but I know I have DX9 because some games/programs I have won't work with anything less.)
    WinXP Home
Running at 1024x768x32 OpenGL mode (D3D mode does not work [~5fps always] and software crashes my computer on any HL mod)

The only backround thing I am running is Cheating Death and sometimes this program called "Refresh Lock" which is why my FPS go higher then 60, but sometimes it does not do that when its running. Also it warps my screen when I start a game, so I don't run it much.

Maybe there are new drivers that I need? I have not upgraded my drivers since Feb.

To get your FPS above 60FPS you need to turn off Vertical Sync setting's in OpenGL setting's under display setting's.
    I have a GeForce4 MX460 on a Athlon XP+ 1500 and 256MB DDR2100 and probally the highest I could get is 71FPS.

I wonder if u can help me, its been bothering me for a while now.
when i run NS in 800x600 i get 45-99 fps and my monitor refresh rate is 100
when i run NS in 1024x i get pretty much the same fps and my monitor is at 85 refresh rate.. first of all which is the better option? i have played with both and for some reason i get slightly higher fps in 1024 but i find it harder to kill marines wen playing as a skulk. Is this due to the refresh rate making my life hard? (i play with Vsync on)
The simple matter is i find playing as a skulk in lower res easier but i much prefer the graphical boost when playing in a higher res which also brings slightly higher fps.
Second question which has bothered me since ive played cs all those years ago.. if i am playing on a server and i look away from the map i get 99 fps, but , when i look towards the centre of the map i get a much lower fps. Its almost as if my graphics card can see through the walls and is trying to render all the player and bulinding models (if this was tied to RAM surely my computer would be making the cpu calculations noise?) i have 384 DDR ram for referance <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

if u could let me know

and B) why is my card trying to render through walls

Hmmm. As to why you have a harder time biting at higher resolutions (if you get pretty much the same FPS, it sounds like), it may just be due to your personal playing style or the way your eyes work. I really couldn;t say for sure. It's odd that you say you can get higher FPS when you run at a higer res though, as that doesn't precsiely make sense...

As for why your FPS drops as you look towards the center of the map, that is (to my understanding) the HL/Quake engine and its whole VIS calculation piece. I think that people like KungFuSquirrel, Ken20, Merkaba, or others could give better info on this, as I am not a mapper to be honest.

    To answer your questions:

    A) It's whatever you feel most comfortable with.
    B) The HL engine will try to be aware of parts of a map that cannot be seen on screen under some circumstances (more details from the experts later, I hope).

    And thanks to you - a nice thread <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

All my friends and collegues have said that my computer acts strange in terms of fps. It always seems to work better at higher resolutions and its only a geforce 3 200 ti :|, in saying that however i read in a similar post that newer cards have trouble rendering in 800x600. Now wether its true or not remains to be seen, however it seems like the case in my circumstance.

    once again thanks for the reply <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

(after fiddling about with my settings ive found that in my case Vsync has the complete opposite desired effect and makes the screen jitter. I didnt notice how bad it was until i turned it off. I understand that it is pretty hard to help if i have custom stuff, but i just realized myself that maybe those models are the reason for low fps.

Taking those screenshots when there is some action going was a lot harder than i thought <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    <b><u>First pic:</u></b>
It isn't very good (not enough action). Sorry about the pic, it is a bit messy, because i had lower the quality, so i can upload it in here. Anyway as you can see, there is only one onos, two dead marines (and one marine between those crates) and few structures. And look at my fps.... 28,6 <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> .

    <b><u>Second pic:</u></b>

I didn't get a screenie, when i have 10 fps, but believe me, it drops to 10 if i try to fly and shoot a hive. Oh and i also noticed that fps is about 75 in hive room. (i mean when it is empty and iam standing still and looking towards the hive)

Tomorrow i will try with default models and see how it effects to my fps. And of course, i try to get a good screenie. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Just disabling V-Sync won't fully solve your problem.

Your monitor is still running at 60hz.

You'll need to run a refresh fix (win2k/xp ppl only)

    www.pagehosting.co.uk/rf/

download it and run it. It will set your monitor to its maximum refresh rate. You'll notice the nice side affect of your eyes not hurting from prolonged game play =P
