Back in the good ol' days...
- When you remember defense chambers healed EVERYTHING around you in huge gulps of health. Walls of lame were nearly unsiegable.

- JP/HMG rushes were non-existant. Marines filled neatly along and built bases at each room with a res node and PUSHED toward your hive.

- Cloaking actually was worth a damn. You could cloak...and the marines couldn't see you!

- There weren't enough people playing to attract the hax0rz. When someone was aiming at you, they weren't afk from the MOUSE1 button if you know what I mean.

Yeah, I remember back when NS first came out and it was actually useful to get Sensory first because at that point you could hide up in the rafters somewhere like Atmospheric Processing (ns_bast) and take out three or four marines before anyone stopped you.

1.0 was good, but there's always good things and bad things.

I liked making the marines push, and people actually wanted you to build turrets in your base.

You know you're a veteran when:

You remember walking on top of turrets the entire length of the map in any game marines would win.

You know the term "lag beast".

You remember a 1 v 9 game being a regular occurance, and the one person actually doing pretty well.

You remember a regenerating onos taking roughly 5 minutes to reach full health......

And my favorite, you remember marine llamas shooting their own IP's to death game after game.

... you can remember when you were one of 50 people in the original Overmind forums, and you were all on a first name basis and decent human beings. Except 'Flourescent Duck', who was a freakish schizophrenic.

... you can remember not getting 100 emails and PM's a day from people whining that such and such is bad, such and such is broken, such and such is an awesome (not) idea for immediate implementation into NS, or MonsE is a forum nazi (neverminding that he created the forums and administers them and helps pay for them).

... you remember starting Readyroom.org as a fansite. And then constantly battling with its original amazingly assinine hosting company over a period of a year, until finally pulling the plug and moving.

If you can't tell, it's been a lousy day.

    edit: Thanks Nem

yea yea thats all well and nice but!

don`t you all remember, marines nearly always won! i dunno why they were so damn organised just when it came out and then it screwed itself, now pub games are back to at least marines have a chance.
i remeber going aliens and we always said marines were so sad to us cos their was at least a 4 player diffrence from teams, us having less.

lol, i beg to differ monkey.

the reason marines won was because learning aliens took a good week or two. after that the majority of wins were aliens until marines USED teamwork. (let it be also noted that the reason marines did not have teamwork, more like random blundering.) after this got into play (to current day) most games are decisivly won by an effecient marine/alien team.

And dont forget the resource bug... what was that anyway? Did you get +1 res for every player on the marine team?
EDIT: and dont forget how much the aliens 0wned the marines in 1.01 where all the vets had hardened up, and gotten bad-@ss skills at NS as an alien, and obliterated all but clans, because there were no longer HA and HMG 3 minutes into the game.

Somehow I don't think being here since 1.0 makes you count as a veteran.

Hell, I've been here since May 2002, and I don't particularly consider myself a veteran.

Eh, not really true... A fade is semi hard and an onos is very easy to spot. gorge and skulk are the only ones that are truly very hard to see.
On a side note ~ You know you are a vet when 1.1 comes out and you cant kill a damn skulk cuz ur too used to firing above its body because of the screwy hitboxes.
  • see-you-in-disney-landsee-you-in-disney-land Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 3241Members
Aye, the new hitboxes will be bizzare at first.

I remember the first game well, sod marines, I thought, I was a hardcore alien in AvP nothing I can't handle. Ns_nothing, starting in cargo bay. Learned that by going through the corridor with the broken steam pipe I could get to the marine base, and the raping it over and over again. I was accustomed to jump spamming and bite spamming as well as ambushes and wall crawling. Two mins later a guy named [NS]Mercior joined, "Can I be in your clan?" I asked. Mercior took a look at my beastly score and agreed. We won our first clan match three days after that.

Must have been v1.02 I imagine, do sometimes miss the invincable fades of v1.03

    Good times...

I didn't yell elephant however, more like "OMG!!! WTH IS THAT!!! A V V SOME! OH S***!!!! MEDPACGHGHGHG............"

  • ObliteraterObliterater Join Date: 2002-11-22 Member: 9652Members
remeber when it seemed like it took 10 minuts to find your way to the enemy, mostly because every 3 feet there was a unkillable wall of lame that had to be taken down with 8 siege cannons and a wall of turrets, and afterwords setting up a second base with everything exept IP's and PG, then moving on to the next one.

And when people saw so much as an OC they had to siege it, and turret it.
