Big. VERY big. - That is NOT a good thing.
"Video scope with mods". - Wooo. Do you really need to be able to play Solitaire when you shoot people.
Big "Fat" rounds. - 5.56 Nato is NOT a big round. It's relatively small, but has penetration.
Heavy. - That's a good thing?

It's not that big... to my knowledge the HK G11 is larger, the FN-2000 scope module is on par with the integrated target designator, and I you know as well as I the AN/PVS-4(or 10? Educate me.) is freaking huge...

Said video scope is easy enough to manage that everyday Joe Grunt can simply "Lase, lift, fire."

I'm pretty sure the "fat" rounds he was referring ot were the 20mm smart munitions.

Heavy? It's roughly 8 pounds, and the recoil is a bit higher than a standard G36E (In fact, the attached AR is essentially a G36E without stock and sights)

Anything on the business end? An intelligent high-tech gun is no substitute for proper training.
It's not total crap either, just Aliant really needs to step back and take a good look at how "survivable" their platform really is.

----------

Okay, I want this for LMG. I don't like having the same model for multiple weapons (I like being able to tell immediately 'Hey! I got an HMG!') but this gun just looks so futuristic, how can you turn it down?

Yeah. It seems to me that they are taking too MANY things out of the hands of a soldier.

I bet you this will never become standard issue.

#1: Semi-Auto 6 rn mag 20mm launcher? 20mm is SMALL as far as grenades go, and considering what happened in Vietnam, soldiers will LOVE to waste ammo on firing these as fast as possible.

#2: Too expensive for mass production.

As far as GAMING goes, it's too fricking huge. Takes up the entire lower right corner. I'll stick to normal sized guns thank you very much.

About the heaviness and accuracy, just something to keep in mind. Heavier guns lead to a soldier carrying less supplies of other kinds, but heavy guns negate recoil very well. Typically, the heavier a gun is, the easier it is to control the recoil, and thus aim. I'm betting that's what the previous poster meant by mentioning its size, and then directly mentioning it's accuracy. A lighter gun is more maneuverable and a grunt can carry more in terms of equipment, but the recoil is a problem.

A very good example would be a cut down m4a1 compared to a regular one.
• MCN00bMCN00b Join Date: 2002-12-12 Member: 10693Members
better example is the FG42
light manueverable gun with massive recoil due to the huge caliber of the mauser round fired
that seperate weapon is the assault rifle part of the OICW
and btw, the gun is not too much heavier than the current M16 with m203 GL
you dont need a big explosion with nades
they are indirect fire weapons, so just lob it in the direction of the enemy - and with the comp targeting system, it will be highly accurate
• darrenjmdarrenjm Join Date: 2003-03-19 Member: 14714Members
I don't like guns with stuff I can't use. Yes, yu could make seperate GL and HMG/LMG Models, but you only get one at a time, so you would be like "YES! Now I got a Grenade Gun! And all my 5.56mm OICW ammo has evaporated!... Wait- THAT SUCKS..."

BTW, this goes for scopes and grenade launchers and such, just my opinion.
• MCN00bMCN00b Join Date: 2002-12-12 Member: 10693Members
you must want to slit your wrists everytime you play with that default LMG then eh?
• sheena_yanaisheena_yanai Join Date: 2002-12-23 Member: 11426Members
hahahahaha lol ... its so funny to read that.... the oicw is heavy? who said that? this gun looks heavier then it is.. a fact is that a soldier with an m16/m203 system and ammo have to carry much more weight than a soldier with an OICW plus ammo

1) M29 (OICW)s weight of 14 pounds is 10 to 30% less weight than the current M16/M4/M203 systems. When comparable features such as Thermal Weapon Sight, Optic Sight, Rails, Aiming Light, Leaf Sight and Laser are added, the standard infantry soldier carries 15 to 19 pounds.

2) M29 (OICW)’s 20mm HE round weighs only 1/4 pound compared to the M203’s 40mm round weight of 1/2 pound – a 50% comparison weight savings with substantially more effectiveness.

3) 18 rounds of 40mm ammunition in a soldier’s vest weigh 9 pounds. If a soldier was carrying 18 rounds of 20mm the weight is 4 1/2 pounds.

i got here a nice pc with very early OICW configuration alternatives (late 1990s).

1 - combined 5.56mm rifle and 20mm launcher (present configuration);
2 - 20 mm launcher with detachable 4.6mm HK PDW submachine gun;
3 - 20mm launcher configuration with an unknown HK rifle

lol..

and i have one question...why nobody did post a pic of the phase 3 prototype of the aliant techsystems oicw? there are just pics of phase2.. and 1..
phase 3 was the planing target, in this state the gun uses much more advanced electronics than the older models.the targeting computer uses the much smaller, lighter, and power saving ccd cam technology.. not this bulky raped hyphen industrial corp. prototypes...
• sheena_yanaisheena_yanai Join Date: 2002-12-23 Member: 11426Members
and heres the present stage of the current tested one..
this oicw is already implemented into the landwarrior system..
the oicw´s t.a.s. is linked to the h.m.d. on the soldiers helmet.. this way he sees trough the weapons "eyes"..
that means he can hold the weapon around corners or over walls and see whats there, without showing to much of himself
