    ok..you want to see ugly weapons..heres the french papop

    Weapon: PAPOP Weapon System
    Description: Similar in concept to the American OICW, the PAPOP is a two part weapon system consisting of a 5.56mm rifle unit and a 35mm grenade launcher. The grenade launcher feeds through a three round tubular magazine, and grenades can be set to either a standard burst or a proximity fused lateral burst pattern, allowing limited capability against targets in foxholes and the like. A special gas venting system prevents injury to the user when firing the grenade launcher. In addition, the weapon has a video sight mounted on the business end with a small adjustable LCD screen on the back, allowing a soldier to look around corners and even fire the rifle unit without exposing himself.

    ouch ;p

    the M29 (OICW) had a test failure in September 1999 at Aberdeen
    During the Proof of Principle testing, in a fixed test stand, a 20mm round detonated in the weapon chamber.
    This caused two injuries: one person was treated as an outpatient and the second person required hospitalization for a broken arm.
    The failure came after many successful single round firings followed by a shift to multiple round firings from a magazine. A government and industry Red Team determined the most probable cause was a system problem caused by three combined failures: a misaligned connector, software miscommunication between fire control and ammunition fuzing and mechanical failure in the safe and arming mechanism.

    who still wants a m29? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    1) M29 (OICW)s weight of 14 pounds is 10 to 30% less weight than the current M16/M4/M203 systems. When comparable features such as Thermal Weapon Sight, Optic Sight, Rails, Aiming Light, Leaf Sight and Laser are added, the standard infantry soldier carries 15 to 19 pounds.

    2) M29 (OICW)’s 20mm HE round weighs only 1/4 pound compared to the M203’s 40mm round weight of 1/2 pound – a 50% comparison weight savings with substantially more effectiveness.

    3) 18 rounds of 40mm ammunition in a soldier’s vest weigh 9 pounds. If a soldier was carrying 18 rounds of 20mm the weight is 4 1/2 pounds.

    i got here a nice pc with very early OICW configuration alternatives (late 1990s).

    1 - combined 5.56mm rifle and 20mm launcher (present configuration);
    2 - 20 mm launcher with detachable 4.6mm HK PDW submachine gun;
    3 - 20mm launcher configuration with an unknown HK rifle <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->

    The problem is, it won't be much lighter because "If a soldier can carry XXX pounds in this configuration, he could carry XXX pounds of THIS configuration." That means even though the OICW's ammo is lighter, they're going to give him more to carry till the weight is the same or greater- And the M-16/M203 does not require things like... batteries... which can also end up being fairly heavy.

    In any case, the OICW is definately bulkier which is an issue regardless of weight.

    dont you think that a soldier who carries more stuff to get the same wheigt is better equipped as the other soldier? thats the important point where the wheigt counts.. we are not on a picknick here gentlemans..
    ooohh.. and you have to see the new generation of powersource for the landwarrior system <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
    i think duracell will go bankrott if these babys come to the open market lol..
    the computer is handy.. but you dont need the computer all the time.. it also got backup ironsights... and the grenades acting without programming like regular impact grenades..

    Not nessisarily. The 20mm grenade has a complex fusing system. That, combined with the small package, means you get a very small charge. In addition, since it is airburst, only the lower hemisphere of said charge will be doing the damage, the upper hemisphere shoots its charge harmlessly up-

    All of this means that, although you can carry more 20mm roudns, the 40mm per round is more effective, espeically in defeating vehicles. A similar airburst system can be employed with the 40mm, not only giving it the OICW's airburst ability, but also delivering more explosive and fragments than the 20mm could, thus giving you a greater chance for a hit, and penetration, versus a target that may be armored.

    In addition, if there is an enemy in any sort of bunker with overhead cover, the 20mm is utterly useless, whereas the 40mm can strong-arm it's way through sandbags and defeat the bunker by brute force.

    I'm not saying the OICW is a bad idea; the 20mm grenades would be superior in urban conflicts due to it's smaller lethal radius reducing the possibility of fratricide as well as undue civilian casualties.

    What I am saying is that I would perfer a weapons system that can fire 20mm _Impact_ grenades rather than airburst (if you choose to keep the more complex airburst option, thats fine, but have it as an option in case it doesn't work out as well as expected in the field), in a package similar to the OICW but with the 5.56mm portion removed and more ammunition for that space and weight. In other words, a squad level light automatic grenade launcher. Perhaps a flechette round for close quarters.

    uhm... but the 20mm grenade of the oicw got a impact function also..

    possible programming modes of the he rounds are : airburst, MOUT short arm, impact detonation, ,penetrating detonation delayed, self-destruct ,
    ..and that all in one.. and you can fire that smart-nades with pinpoint accuracy... and faster than a m203 ever could fire.. maybe weak.. but clever...
  • BurncycleBurncycle Join Date: 2002-11-24 Member: 9759Members, NS1 Playtester
    If it stands up to field use, yes very clever, but I still would want a 203 guy in my squad.

    Even with impact fuses, the shortfalls I described in my last post are still present.

    I do think the OICW program should continue however, because even if this particular model is, in my opinion, probably not going to work very well in combat use, it is damn good research which means the future versions will only get more compact, more reliable, and lighter <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
