pwn. Without any vowels. Its difficult to pronounce but, I think, well worth the effort.

Only problem with roxxoring boxxers round here is that they are more usually associated with boxer shorts, (your skivvies, undercrackers) and it sounds like you have a fetish for male underwear.

Well try pronounce srbska. Most cant but serbians can. No wovels are fairly wide spread in some areas of the world. I think hebrew has something with vowels as well...

Hmm. "Pwn" annoys me too. My friends and I pronounce it "pawn" personnaly, simply as that was the first world to enter my mind when I saw it typed.

You know, if people really do want quite a rubecular view of language, we should invent our own mis-spelt stupidity! I'm in favour of making the "lag-to-alg" typo official! Just so I don't look idiotic.

wizard@psu: What's the difference from that and "It's to slow you down" ?

The difference is that its not meant to slow you down at all. Just preventing keys from getting messed up. While some people feel that they can type faster with a dvorak keyboard its more preference than anything.

I tried to use dvorak for a while but I ran into a problem since I work for ITS here at PSU and Im always at different computers around campus. Remembering to switch to dvorak layout each time would drive me nuts.

So far today I have been on 4 different computers in the same lab :-p

I think another large part of my annoyance with that particular word is that it is used for the entirely wrong situations.

A skulk that can kill a lone and injured LA/LMG marine is not exactly 'pwn'ing anything.

Now a LA/LMG marine that can take out 3 or 4 skulks alone definately did some 'owning'

.
.
.
But not "pwning"

I have been online gaming for several years... lets see... 18 now, about 13 then, so we'll call it 5 years or so. I didn't see "pwned" used until about CS 1.5 time. I was always saying "Oh, so you sold me to a pawn shop did you? Well I bet you didn't get much, since I was only carrying a USP and my knife "

Also, 1 3 3 7 speak really annoys me to no end when overused, but a tasteful w00t (like when I got 4 mine kills... while I was a skulk...) is just fun to do. Occasionally in real life I will say "I r0x0r" or "You sux0r", mostly during pool games at my friends house. But when people start typing only in "1 3 3 7" then I get annoyed. The only situation in my mind where "teh" is useful and not annoying is "I R TEH ONOS!!!!". I have it bound .

overused leet speak is annoying
but the occasional woot, or r0xored when you knife a bunch of skulks or gorge a HA with healing spray is just fine

I thought there was like voice altering software for ppl to annoy me in the game. You know...sound like 6-10 yrs old and screaming "elite" talk and swearing a lot to compensate for lack of hair growth at that stage in life.

Then I realized to my horror they really are 6-10 yrs old.....
Sadly...."elite" talk has become a fad......for the kool-aid generation....

Hit this link for information on "elite"-speak:

http://www.pseudodictionary.com/

It has some of them in there.

I've always pronounced it 'pone' as well. Pween, pawn, or whatever else some of you are saying sounds... silly. Own. Pwn. Tough one to figure out.

I also believe that one of the death taunts in Unreal 2003 is 'PWNAGE!'. Pronounced pone-age.

As a sidenote, the reason you would play on Roob's server, as I did today, is because the people are nice there and the games were in fun, not vicious swearing and taunting like in many servers. Also you might get to see Roobubba use Leap. He's freaking incredible. I was a fade in the vents outside Cargo Bay on Nothing, and a JP/HMG was flying back and forth and shooting at me. Suddenly I see a skulk come screaming across the wide vent opening and *BAM* its roobubba with another Leap kill. It was awesome.

'Leetspeak' originated via a combination of secure passwording systems, and 300bps text chat. 'u had 2 tlk like ths' as a courtesy to the other people in the live chat.. if everyone spoke in complete sentences, the conversation would actually start lagging, and people would fall behind, reply to outdated lines of text, etc. Another term was born of that, but I can't recall it at the moment.

Well, that is a small part of how it got some acceptance, but that only orginated some shortned versions of words. Now, take me.. and old foggie that was on "Elite" C-64 BBS's with 300 bd modems (actually started with 150, but that didn't last long). Hell, I can recall being godlike when I first got my 1200 bd modem.
Back then ,there was something called ANSI, which allowed primitive text messages to have color and special characters (most BBS's you had to tell it you could ANSI because many systems could not handle the "advanced" graphics) As ANSI came out to more and more people you would start seeing ANSI signatures \/\//|Y ]<00L stuff (most with special characters).
Of course, as the "younger" crowd came in, they figured all the extra characters were too much to type or couldn't figure out how to get the extended characters, so you started getting "Elit3 Sp3ak", which evolved into the "elite" sp33k of today. As for pwned.. I never knew how that came into being and really find it annoying. I was hoping the elit3 sp33k would vanish 15 years ago, now we see kids writing term papers in it! I must have died and gone to hell
