ns_eclipse

Because its architecture is imple. Just corridors and it's not a maze.

I don't think eclipse is good because the rooms all look alike. For me that makes it really hard to know where I am. Especially outside northcore there are so many pillars it's easy to get disoriented.

I'd say Tanith. A nice, bright map with easily identifable, unique rooms.
Hera is also like that.

Stay away from bast and lost.

Well, I'll go the oppisite way, and tell you the two I feel are worst for a newbie.

Bast first. Aside from being a small maze, and with so many elevation changes it's hard to get your bearings, it has a vent that gives ready acess to the whole base, and you can bet every skulk on the other side knows this, PLUS it has this unique revolving door that's so well tucked into the corner behind the rez chamber it took 4 games on that map for me to even find it when I first started. I kept wondering how aliens were arriving from the wall. It's fun once you get your bearings though, alot of the massive vents can be weilded and if you jump on that, the aliens are at a severe disadvantage.

Hera. Sweet lord. Message to any newbies."Abandon Hope, all ye who enter here." I'm not kidding at all, and while I hate to propagaite a defeatest attitude, if you /are/ a newbie and you know it? Raise your F4 key. Get OUT and OFF that map. You will frustrate your self, your marines, and your commander. That place is the sort of "maze" that gave rise to the word "Labryinth" and it stays that way for a good 10 games. There is a "Vent" that is the most painfully hard to defend thing you'll face in all the standard NS maps. Elevation changes. Switchbacks. Doors that require wielding to open. Everything. Oh, and if for some reason you're a newbie and you think you can handle it, wait till the ole com tells you to "Watch Holoroom until we get there". PSSSSHH. /4/ vents , 1 door, one tunnel, two archways into that room, arranged in a circle around the rez nods and you're in the middle. Did I mention 6 out of the 8 ways inside were on diffrent levels? I'm not kidding. That room, when assualted by competend aliens, is like trying to play Serius Sam, only with 2 health, and one clip. What do coms see? A Rare "double rez" opportunity. What do /you/ see? Why in Gods name did I volunter for the TSA, and what is that chuckling noise. The good news? Once you know what to do and get some experince, a full 80 percent of all vents on that map can be weilded shut, a must on any map I make..you know..once I learn to MAKE maps and all. That, and the two main path doorways, huge heavy jobs, can be weilded up or down at your preference. Once cuts off aliens into the nearest western rez node, the other allows you to cut your trip to the western hive by 2/3. Not to shabby.

Hope this helped

Hera is a good map, but it's definitively too complex for newbies. And holoroom.... lol I agree with you.
• sekdarsekdar Join Date: 2002-11-21 Member: 9564Members
put him in the holoroom. if he considers himself a noob, then all the skulks going there will make good target practice.

shoot at skulks, kill them, die to more, repeat until you are good enough to never die

i think eclipse is the best for new players. Very straightforward and simple-yet-effective layout.

Easiest map for noobies?
ns_missilecommand.

Easiest real map I would say is... yeah, eclipse.

Tanith is good for newbies. Small, with distinctive hive locations.

Nothing is also good, as its architecture is essentially rectangular.

Caged is about the worst. I still get lost.

They were the maps I probably learnt quickest as a newbie.

Hera is so aweful. ive played ns since it came out and about 1 month ago on hera i finnally realized that if you weld one of the doors open near holoroom. it closes a bunch of vents. it opens a bunch of vents. its just almost impossible to memorize as every time the door opens or closes vents change. and also i found out how to build outside the map on hera. i mean on top of the glass bridge... aliens cannot win if you have jetpacks as there is a chasm about one mile deep below the glass bridge. if you have a jetpack you can fly down there. but thats a tale for another time.
• ShuflYShuflY Join Date: 2002-11-15 Member: 8760Members
Hera is not a bad map, it's just the least understood map, most people have no idea how to play it, few commanders have winning strats for hera... But on topic, that is a terrible newbie map.

Eclipse and Tanith I would say are both pretty good beginner maps. The best advice I can give you is to just keep playing, the maps seem intimidating and unlearnable at first, but soon enough you will know the names of every room on every map.
• CronosCronos Join Date: 2002-10-18 Member: 1542Members
I beg to differ.

Hera was the very first map I played on upon release, although confusing at first the basic layout can be learnt in 10 minutes or so.

Of course, that was from the alien perspective, from the marine perspective, hera is a meat in a can experience...

I'd say eclipse would win hands down for both sides...

Mmmm....eclipse....

/me thinks ns_dust

/me put ont he flame shield for mentioning something from CS.

Yeah eclipse is fun. I found bast and caged to be the most confusing at first, though the map I absolutely still HATE as mariens is nancy. (TOO DARK!!!!!!) I've been playing since december and i STILL don't know every nook and cranny in the maps (nancy vent systems I havent learned, and hera vents I haven't learned, especially which ones can be weled and where)
• FireStormFireStorm Join Date: 2002-11-06 Member: 7390Members
Nancy vent systems are impossible to learn... I should say nancy vent system because there's only one vent system covering the entire map...
• Frogg2Frogg2 Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 4867Members, Constellation
I believe there are 3 vent systems, yes it may be somewhat confusing at times, but it's not impossible to learn. One bad part about it is some of the vents cant be seen by the commander and you can lose your marines in there.

eclipse is an easy map to learn but I remember the area around comp core was kinda confusing

nothing was the last map I learned, alot of it looks the same/similar it seemed alot bigger when I didnt know the map.
• VyvnVyvn Join Date: 2002-08-24 Member: 1226Members
You know what's great about learning Bast first? Every single room looks different. The actual layout snakes around itself quite a bit, but this means that you are never far away from where you want to go, and as long as you follow directions and waypoints, you can always find where you need to be. Plus, it's really just a good map in general.

I played Bast first, and now it's the map that I know the best. Followed by Hera and Eclipse. Eclipse is also a good map to learn on, because it's not too big and not too difficult to learn, and you can always have a good game on it. It's the map I would reccomend if you're trying out alien for the first time.

THere is one vent system. If you go to a vent, you can reach every part on the map if you don't get lost...

I'm going to buck the trend and say that, for me, Bast was the EASIEST map to learn. I didn't quite get all the vent stuff for a while, but the general, basic layout? Simple.

Just think of the map in terms of Four Rooms and a few Lines that connect them.

The first two rooms you should put in your head are REFINERY and ENGINE hives. Think of a straight line connecting those two hives. In the actual map, theres a slight turn near REFINERY, and the line consists of some really severe elevation changes, but as the lerk flies, its basically a straight line, and if you think of it that way, it'll help.

Halfway between REFINERY and ENGINE, at the highest elevation (you can't miss it) is the MARINE START. To get into the marine start, theres a turning door or a vent... just crawl into the vent, or push the button to open the door. Not too hard, may take you a moment or two to find it the first time.

The third hive is to the far left of REFINERY. Just go left from REFINERY hive, (right if you're facing the other way) and you'll be in a tram way. Follow that to the end, into the small room, straight up, and you're at FEEDWATER hive. It sounds more complicated than it is, remember think straight lines.

FEEDWATER has another entrance that leads to a double node and also the marine base. It's very straightforeward, even if it does twist a bunch. Just follow the tunnels without going into any vents and you eventually get to an elevator which leads into the marine base.

.........................................
...................ENGINE................
.......|------......|....................
.....---.....|......|.........There's....
..FEED.......MARINE.|.........also a bunch
..WATER-|........---|.......of stuff over
........|...........|.......here, but you
........|...........|.......can basically
........|...........|.......ignore it until
........|...........|.......you understand
........--------------.....the rest of the
.....................|..............map..
...................REFINERY..............
.........................................

I recommend eclipse. That was the first map I played, and I figured out the layout in the first game. Don't play bast and expect to do anything beyond walking through big rooms and hallways, the vent system is hell to learn, though once learned it helps a lot. Caged doesn't seem to me like a difficult map.. might just be me. Nothing should not be touched under any circumstances until you're better, or willing to get owned and raped repeatedly. As for Hera, the basic layout isn't difficult except for the multiple elevation changes, and then there's the fact that skulks can pop out from any of 100 places in one room. Nancy is undecipherably confusing, and that's BEFORE the vent system. Stay away.

turns out there's 4, 5 if you count the one from the sub-tunnel to port engine.

2 major ones, 2-3 minor ones.

Well, you're right, but I don't consider the yellow and blue ones as vent systems, but as simple vents. So there are 2 vent systems.

Pick any map, they're all good.

Yes some are easier to get lost in, but if you avoid those maps you'll never learn them... if you run into Hera or Bast do not F4, just stick it out and follow your teammates around.

I play alien but then again I praticed alot offline just to get the feel for things. and then learned the fine art of playing hide and seek and seeing how long it takes me to scurry into a vent

I think the two major vent systems in Nancy should be linked (preferably somewhere near nameless hive.) That's all I want for 1.1

Yes ns_eclipse is one of the smallest maps available and is very easy to find your self around.

Hera on the other hand is a HUGE Map full of many vents and rooms. However once you play it for a while it is not that bad as there are both positives and negatives for both teams. (eg: Marines: getting to "processing" to build there)

I would list other maps, but unfortunately my memory sucks and I can not remember the names. I know what they look like though

I'll second bast. It took awhile for me to find the engine room hive (I started this game and dove right in as an alien. Why? Well, I should've thought that was obvious. You can't put a camera in a creatures mouth and have its jaws slash down on every bite and not expect people to want to play it.), because I didn't find out that door opened for a while. I'd occasionally stumble across it during my vent wanderings, but it took a couple games to get it nailed down. Except for a couple of loopy vents, that map is pretty simple. A few of the lesser used areas you may not figure out for a while, but after one twenty minute game on that map you should be able to get anywhere your comm wants you to go without stopping to think for twenty seconds or wandering around for five minutes.

Very helpful.

I think the vents should be joined around the big cargo storage room next to mess hall. I've found the vents difficult to get into with a jet pack, as it requires exact timing. I can do it most of the time, but when I'm commanding its frustrating to see my marines die from a skulk to the back when they're trying (in vain) to fly into those vent openings.
