<div class="IPBDescription">Powerstrip</div> OMG I can't believe I didn't know about this and used to try and play games without it. I have a crappy monitor and NO videocard support software gives a decent amount of control over the gamma, brightness and contrast.

It's shareware but the the unregistered is fully functional and doesn't expire.

I am not aware of this being AdWare.

anyway, you can find it here:

    It does what it advertises. I just wish it didn't such as big "in-your-face" approach when booting up and trying to squeeze the cash out of you. Ended up being the reason why I uninstalled it. I'm a very minimalistic guy when it comes to my computer. hmmm, looks like it may get annoying, if what you say about big money squeezer is true, but helpful none the less.

    i use powerstrip to safely, easily and quickly overclock my video card up 8% for palying NS and down 15% for non-gaming.

    with this i get a few more frames per second and i feel like i am prolonging the life of my video card by putting it into hibernation while running things like Word and IE.

    it also lets you set resolution as high as your monitor allows, which is way past what windows lets you on the display properties dialog.

    Powerstrip is on the list of my "must haves" for my Windows PC. I bought it after I figured out I use the program each day for many things. Gamma and brightness adjustment on-the-fly, screen size switching, and diverse tweakings of my videosubsystem. Once you've paid for it, it's very little intrusive.

    It also has a nice function for reclaiming RAM from windows, works very well. I can get 92% system resources free.

    I had thoughts about bying it legal, cuz at startup the close button has a timer, and my timer starts at 250 (or even more), thats becuz I used it so long, I actually dont mind it (atm its still encounting) but sometimes if I screw up my desktop icons and I want to restore their placement (yes u can do that with powerstrip), but then I have to wait so long till I can close the tips <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->, every week or something it adds like 10 seconds (something like that, I dont really keep track of it).

    You might want to be very careful using this program. I tried overclocking my video card just a tad (processor from ~213mhz to 230mhz, memory from ~513mhz to 550mhz) and whenever I tried playing NS, it said my opengl mode wasn't supported. It still said this after I reset to default settings and uninstalled the program - I had to do a system restore. So there's my fair warning, be careful!

    I can understand a friend doing it, but I'm pretty sure I didn't delete ANY files, much less video drivers.

    Pretty sure he just saw all the other 'exploit' and 'cheat' threads sitting around, and decided to toss that up to join in. That or he's never used it, so has no idea what it actually does.

    That or he was just joking, and forgot to put the <sarcasm></sarcasm> tags on.. but that's giving the benefit of the doubt, something I don't tend to do much any more with humans. :b

    More than likely he means because it allows you to change gamma and brightness settings so high that even dark corners in maps are fully bright, then again anyone who says that should try playing on an old system. I remember before release, someone posted a "fun" screenshot of ns_nothing. After 30 minutes of the PT's laughing at me because I couldn't understand what was funny, someone manually changed the gamma of the picture. Lo and behold, there were several pictures of dancing Flayra edited onto the screenshot, only on my system I couldn't see a damn thing.
    So yeah...PowerStrip is a great app for me at least <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    OMG

    Man I swear people will WHINE about anything. Yeah and having a monitor that has brightness and contrast controls is cheating too! Yeah, yeah, and video cards that come with overclocking software, those lamers, how dare they cheat!

    How about a nice, tall glass of SHUT THE F_CK UP!

    Sorry, I just had to get that out. As far as problems, I'm sure that like with any program out there on the net there may be one or two that can't handle it. But to assure some of you, I have three computers which all have powerstrip on them now. Video cards as follows: ATI 9700, GeForce 2 and Voodoo 3. All are mated to AMD CPU's and 2 of them to ASUS motherboards. Powerstrip works with ALL of them.

    Most important was the old Voodoo 3, which I cannot find ANYTHING but the original drivers now that 3DFX is out of busiess. WickedGL used to work but the webpage is toast and I can't find it anywhere. The OEM videocard control software was not designed for and will not run under windows xp or 2000. I had pretty much givenup until I found Powerstrip. And if you don't like people asking for money everytime you start the program they are letting you use for FREE (new version has no expiration) then buy it or have a nice tall glass of..............

    YES. DUH <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Most of the programs works fine with win 95 - ME. You run into problems when you have win XP or 2000. Most of the them just don't work right. (Yes, I am running win 2000 on an AMD 500 mhz w/ 128 RAM and a 3DFX Voodoo 3 - it runs just fine). I was about to wipe the disk on that computer and reinstall ME just so I could get my video toolbox back when I found the powerstrip thingy.

    NOTE: You can find 2 dozen sites about WickedGL on the web, but every single one of them points you back to the WickedGL homepage - which no longer exists!

    i used to use powerstrip but i got tired of the lame countdown on bootup, i searched download.com for a differnt gamma adjuster and found something called Gammalaunch (think its called that tho not sure) its a 14 day trial period but you can get by that by adjusting your system date...

    it does the same as powerstrip but without all the fancy crap, adjust's gamma and thats it, sits quietly on your menubar <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    oh and to people who think gamma adjusters = cheat, you probably have a good moniter, my friend doesnt need one and NS is far brighter on his PC than on mine when i dont use the gamma program, i tryed to play a game without it and its just impossable.

    Its being suggested for people who's systems can't run gamma high enough to see anything. Most people with newer systems have no problem with this, and can change it in the options menu. From what I've heard, it doesn't sound like it gives any unfair advantage. And just as a general statement to everyone, please try and reserve "elite"-speak (ie. h4x, etc.) for CS and other such retarded games. The idea behind NS is to require some thought and intelligence from players(waits for flames...).

    I like it. You need to be careful though- you can really mess up your system. Increase it a little bit at a time till you start getting lock ups/visual errors. Also- I suggest people using this set it so it only overclocks during HL/other games. extend overclocking w/o proper cooling is dangerous to your system! I was able to up my clock speed 15mhz... I haven't tried playing with the RAM bus... thanks for the link, working great.

    Erp.. he'll really hate my 1.5GB then. :b As well as my video card, CPU, monitor, optical mouse... after all, all of those are advantages over someone playing NS on a stick and a piece of string. Which of course is unfair to those lacking string. Or a stick. Or both. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Playing with gamma set far too high /is/ unfair to other players. Playing after using a utility to set your gamma properly is not. Or to flush your RAM. Or to clock up your video card, if it can handle the strain.
