<div class="IPBDescription">Q3 mod stealin from ns.</div> Tremulous, a quake 3 modification which is, to put it simply, a port of ns over to the q3 engine. I didnt think it was that bad, but i saw in some of the shots that the textures on the maps were the ones used in ns. Here is the pic i first noticed it in. <a href='http://tremulous.sourceforge.net/screenshot.php?id=74' target='_blank'>http://tremulous.sourceforge.net/screenshot.php?id=74</a> Mappers should be able to point out the ones that are in the ns.wad. There are other pics also on their homepage. <a href='http://tremulous.sourceforge.net/index.php?section=news' target='_blank'>http://tremulous.sourceforge.net/index.php...hp?section=news</a> Im just bringing this to the attention of the ns team.

<b>*EDIT*</b> - Although it looks very similiar, and has many similiarities, it is not a rip off! The textures are taken from shaderlab, which is a free texture source. Both NS and this mod took textures from it, it seems, they DIDN't steal them from the ns.wad!

    If they give credit to Natural Selection then there is no problem. If they say "I made this myself" then they deserve to have legal action taken against them.

    Hrm....that is pretty weird...Well, let's leave it up to the NS team to pass judgement on these guys, I guess.

    Ever thought that maybe they are just using the idea?

    Maybe then valve should go out and sue all of the people who have ripped off the Counter-Strike gameplay type.

    but also cs wad is free to use in others.. ns.wad is explicitly for use in ns maps only... i made a post suggesting that they talk to the ns team.....

    Look at some of the posts... they have a skulk model "strider".... and a fade model...... motion tracking..... same building system....

    The textures you're seeing are public domain textures available from the Shader Lab, some of which are included in NS, <b>NOT</b> textures ripped from NS. I have not seen a single NS-specific texture in any shot I've seen. I'll keep looking, but I expect I'll find nothing.

    Yeh it is a total rip, but it had to happen sometime. I dont mind a mod team makeing a NS clone for Q3, hell I might even play it. But when they start stealing other peoples work it burns me up, as you can clearly see that those textures are from HL:NS.

    Had you read the "About" section, you would find that it is essentially very different from NS.

    And using that logic, NS is an absolute ripoff from Gloom, that was originally on Quake 2.

    Calm down, it's not a blatant ripoff, so far the only similarities are building structures, and killing aliens, if thats a ripoff then everyone been ripping off Aliens and we'd all be foxed...

    No need for concern guys <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    You should probably let the NS devs worry about this and not get your panties in a bunch.

    Those textures are free for download to all at shaderlab.com. Also i think this mod has been in development for quite some time. Its not a recent startup based soley on the features of NS.

    there is going to be gloom for quake 3 as well iv'e heard

    if you don't know waht gloom is you should be ashamed as it is basically the same as NS only 5 years ago for quake2

    <a href='http://www.planetgloom.com' target='_blank'>take a look</a>

    also contains information and screenshots about teh q3 version..

    both games have hteir virtues and detriments, for example heavy armor in gloom gets jetpack automatically and handgrenades.. but the jetpack fuel also fuels the armor's laser cannon, hatchlings (lvl 0 aliens) have a grappling hook, which ithink skulks need desperately as well as one hit kill on lvl 0 rines.. (but marines have one hit kill on lvl 0 aliens as well) even some of the models in NS were taking directly from gloom, like the offense towers which are exactly the same as the spike throwing towers in gloom (one hit kill though on lvl 0 rines but it only fires on shot every few seconds)

    i played this game for 3 years and it was a dying mod when i quit playing, there was only one server left in the united states, onecall.net

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Tremulous for Quake 3 Arena is an open source modification that <b>blends a team based FPS with elements of an RTS</b>. Players can choose from <b>2 unique races, aliens and humans.</b> Players on <b>both teams are able to build working structures in-game</b> like an RTS. These structures provide many functions, the most important being spawning. The <b>designated builders must ensure there are spawn structures or other players will not be able to rejoin the game after death</b>. Other structures provide <b>automated base defense</b> (to some degree), <b>healing functions</b> and much more...

    Player advancement is different depending on which team you are on. As a human, players are rewarded with credits for each alien kill. These <b>credits may be used to purchase new weapons and upgrades from the "Armoury", a structure that must be built by a member of the human team</b>. Credits gained can also be stored in a "bank" structure. The alien team advances quite differently. Upon killing a human foe, the alien must either store that human's vital organs for later advancement or infest the body on the spot. <b>After a short wait the alien emerges as a new more powerful class with new functions and abilities.</b>

    The overall objective behind Tremulous is to <b>eliminate the opposing team</b>. This is achieved by not only killing the opposing players but also <b>removing their ability to respawn by destroying their spawn structures</b>.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    So, in other words, it's Natural Selection + Counter-Strike? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

    <b>Definately</b> read the about section. This mod has several differences. The biggest one I've seen so far is that humans must kill aliens, then buy better weapons with kill points. Maybe this mod can take several rambos off our hands <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Also, keep in mind: that game looks like a piece of crap, while NS is good.
    I'd only be concerned for the NS team if someone pulled off the concept <i>better</i> than they have (which is unlikely at this point).

    There you have it. If a mapper for NS can't find any textures ripped from NS, there really isn't any more discussion needed. Sure, I'm not to thrilled to hear about this game and its "subtle" similarities, but if the dev team has no problem with it, neither should we.
  • SycophantSycophant Join Date: 2002-11-05 Member: 7092Members
    Tremulous' earliest news posting on their website is October 6, 2001. I somehow doubt they set out to rip off NS, since I can only assume that NS was still in a pretty rough shape at that point. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Still, I think it looks pretty good. Not <i>nearly</i> as creepy and 'believable' as NS, but looks worth a try when it gets released.

    this is pretty weak, but it had to happen sooner or later. Just yesterday I read an article about Savage and they were saying it was one of the first game to combine RTS and FPS. I would like to set them straight , but that wont happen.

    You seem to be the first person who actually read my statement. I congratulate you.

    God this thread is pathetic (though I give mad props to the Tsunami Bomb avatar!). I see no indication of this being a rip-off of NS whatsoever. Ideas and concepts never come solo - intended or not, there's always at least 2. There are people who have never even heard of NS out there, people who don't own Half-Life, and people making similar titles. Deal with it.

    Someone breifly mentioned gloom up above. It was a Quake mod that is very similar to the description above. NS isn't a new idea, although it has been executed better than others of it's ilk. NS didraise the bar with it's comm mode however Gloom can't touch that. Let the clones come; I bet they can't touch NS.

    Wow...I don't think anyone has ever looked at it from that point of view. Seems like to me most people think that the FPS/RTS is NS copyrighted, and that no other games should use this type of genre. Hey, its just like any other type of genre out there, and I couldn't have said it better myself, you should be happy seeing more of these types of games showing up.

    There's one thing Tremulous does that NS and no other Mod, or even commercial game like AvsP 1 or 2 does as well though...

    Wallwalking. They did it, and they did it damn well if you snag the 'demo' and try it out.

    Bumps in the ceiling act like steps, bumps in a wall act like steps too if you're on the wall, etc, etc.

    As for ripping off NS... um, no.

    As for ripping off Gloom... um, no. It's being worked on by some of the same people, I'd imagine it's going to be merged into Q3Gloom, if it's not turned into the basis for that already.

    Gah, now I see <a href='http://tremulous.sourceforge.net/screenshot.php?id=84' target='_blank'>the reason</a> why variable view orientation wasn't included in NS. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

    The aliens in that seem to have a raised FOV(Field Of View), and for the record NS isn't the first RTS/FPS game.

    I <i>think</i> Battlezone(the new version from like 1998) is.
