Lord Of The Rings : Ttt (movie)

<div class="IPBDescription">good? bad?</div> Personally, I could barely sit through The Two Towers. I'm not a <i>huge</i> LotR fan, but I've read the books a few times so I know the story pretty well.

Faramir is very high on my list of favorite LotR characters. In the book, he's very noble, understanding, and supportive of Frodo and his quest. In the movie, he's just another Boromir who wants the ring and the 'power' it provides. I endured the rest of the movie because I <i>assumed</i> it'd be impossible to screw up a character as book-developed as Faramir. I was very disappointed, and I walked out of that movie as p'd off as I've ever been.

The Ents were pretty good, but way too small. The books make them out to be huge ancient trees, with each footstep spanning miles. In the movie, they're basically just big houseplants. They're not big. They're not impressive. They don't portray 'ancient'. Slow and 'unhasty', yes, but that's only from their voice and the fact that they move slowly.

The flooding of Isengard was okay. I was disappointed that all they did was bust out a dam, when I was expecting the very earth to shift to route a raging river to the plains.

No Shelob? I guess I can understand wanting to use more footage for Helm's Deep, since that was the only part of the movie I even remotely enjoyed.

There's a lot of other little things that really got under my skin, but those are the points that immediately came to mind. I haven't seen the movie in a couple of months, so it's thankfully starting to fade from my memory. I'll still buy the uber-hyper-dragon edition when it comes out on DVD though. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

A friend of mine, who has been reading Tolkien for the majority of his conscious life, was utterly disgusted with the movie. He fell asleep halfway through it (was woken up a few minutes later), hated what he saw, and never said a word during the whole drive home afterwards.

Maybe I was expecting too much from the movie. I loved the first one, as it only slightly strayed from the original story. The second one seemed only loosely based on Tolkien's work, and, to me, just seemed more of a "look what I can do with computer graphics" movie rather than a midpoint in the series.

Harr. Yea, would've been just as good with the original story left intact. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> But that elven armor was still really cool. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Well, "two towers", or "<i>the</i> two towers".

    Either one works, but 'officially' it's "the two towers" <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

<i>edit</i> : did a search for "two towers" before posting, but forgot to change "last 30 days" to "any date". Sorry, my bad. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

Yes, there was a rather lengthy discussion about this. If you feel like going on, I'll move it into the appropriate forum and open it again.

    Preach on, brother.

NZ, go ahead and resurrect that topic if you want; I missed it the first time around, apparently.

(Am I a Tolkien fan? Whatever would give you that idea, other than my name?)

I am in favour of the thread ressurection as well. I almost couldn't bear TTT because of all the *STUPID* decisions Jackson made.

I'm still kinda upset that I didn't get to see the Voice of Saruman scene, I was really looking forward to see how they'd do it in the movie.

Whats the voice of sarumon thing about?
  • p4Samwisep4Samwise Join Date: 2002-12-15 Member: 10831Members
Have you read the book? It's the scene where Theoden and friends confront Saruman at Orthanc, and Saruman tries to enchant them with his voice to get himself a deal.

Given the way that they did Bilbo's hunger for the Ring, and Galadriel's "beautiful and terrible as the dawn" speech, I expect it to be a little cheesy in its impressiveness. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

Aye. Like in those cold war movies where they don't have time to flush out the plot, but you get yumtastical footage of SUBMARINES moving through WATER. Never saw the point. I mean WOW, it's the KING OF ALL HORSES. Let's all WORSHIP the KING of the HORSES. HORSES!

Bah, the only reason you people really hate the movie is that it didn't suit YOUR expectations.

Peter Jackson did a good job compressing an entire book (given the amount that happens and the relative fact that time only moves so fast) into 3 hours. Ok, so they didn't have the voice of saruman. Big freakin woop. So they didn't get to shelob. That've made the movie 3hrs 40 minutes.

I saw it 3 times, 1 at a smallish theater, 1 at a stadium theater and 1 at Lincoln Center. Lincoln Center I saw about 9/10 of the movie, saw it with my girl.

Actually, it barely even <u>used</u> the book for most of the movie. Only the major plot path of the book was <i>roughly</i> followed, and everything else was hacked apart. Sure, it looked great, but so did the American version of Godzilla. That movie was a great monster movie, but it wasn't Godzilla. TTT was a good fantasy movie, but it wasn't Tolkien.

If he had followed the book as closely as he did with Fellowship, it would still have been a great movie. The fans would have been tickled pink, the critics (who all seemed to love the movie) would still have been happy, and we wouldn't be having this discussion/debate here yet again (<i>sorry, my fault for being clueless in the proper use of the search feature</i> <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->).

I'm not even going to bother to see The Two Towers movie. I saw the Fellowship and it was awesome. I read the book and I want to kill Peter Jackson now. The movie's make a mockery of the book, I might see the last to movies just ot laugh at them.
  • BigwigBigwig Join Date: 2002-10-27 Member: 1646Members
I can see how Peter Jackson would have to cut certain parts of the book out, it's very understandle, but what I don't like is that he completely <b>massacred</b> TTT and took the story into his own hands. The warg battle, the Arwen scenes, the "exorcism", the elves, Faramir, <b>OSGILIATH</b>... no, the movie just stopped being Tolkien after a while. He's barely even following the basic plot anymore.

i loved TTT, it still had the feeling of "greatness"

the elves coming to aid at helms deep

the last march of the ents

the choice faramir did, forfeiting his own life for the better of all creation

i sat through the four hours of "making of" footage on the FOTR Extended DVD....
after it..most of my questions were answered (including why Boromir stopped Frodo from helping Gandalf when he was about to fall...)
...hopefully the questions for the changes in TTT will also be answered..i think they worked hard on the plot!

it followed the plot very well...and most of the extra stuff they implemented can be found in the appendices of the book...
i just wish they toned down a little on the fight scenes...and included a little more on Merry, Pippin, and the Ents (have to wait for the extended DVD! <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> )

i loved the escape of merry and Pippin (was done very well)
    i disliked the Arwen scenes...
i found everything to be great actually....

THIS IS WHAT WILL BE IMPLEMENTED INTO THE TWO TOWERS DVD (comes from respectable sources and actual pictures)

    <a href='http://www.dailydigest.net/tttdeletedscenes.html' target='_blank'>http://www.dailydigest.net/tttdeletedscenes.html</a>

If they put all that IN...i will be very very happy....im sure you will too...

AND HERE ARE SOME SCENES THAT WILL BE IN RETURN OF THE KING (WARNING IF YOU HAVENT READ THE BOOKS DO NOT GO HERE
    *MAJOR SPOILERS!**MAJOR SPOILERS!**MAJOR SPOILERS!*

In defense, I do have to say that the two towers was my least favorite book out of the three.

That having been said, I guess in respect to PJ, certain allowances have to be made for what is obviously a difficult film-making task, following three independant stories all at once.

What you have to understand, is that what makes a book a great book doesn't necessarily make a movie a great movie. Unfortunately in the day and age we live, its all about action, suspense, drama, and bloodshed, whereas at the same time what plot remains has to be made easily accessible for the general populace. Unfortunately, yes, I think TT was dumbed down to a certain extent, but eh, what can you do. I still think in the long run the movie will become a classic.

Edit - Just read one of the above links; no scouring of the shire!? Oh...my...god...this calls for protest... <!--emo&--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo-->

That's probably going to be in Return of the King. I mean, if they cut out the returning to Hobbiton and finding it taken over then there's not too much left in the 3rd book to focus on. Sure, there's the battle for Gondor and Sam and Frodo struggling to reach Mt Dhoom but still that's going to leave room for Shelob and the Voice part. Seriously, they wouldn't have been able to put in Voice and still have Helm's Deep.
If you want to complain about how the movie didn't follow the book, consider this. If the film DID follow the book it would have a lot of boring stuff. Tolkien was as much a poet as a writer, if you look at Helms deep in the book it's less than a chapter long; he hardly goes into it much at all. Jackson wanted something epic which really gave justice to the epic nature that the books entail. He couldn't do that with half an hour of Bilbo poems. I love the books, don't get me wrong, but so much of them isn't right for a movie. I loved TTT and although it changed stuff so what? The underlying storyline remained the same, people who hadn't read tolkein got a lot out of it and it will be remembered as one of the most epic films of the early 21st century.

the voice of saruman may actually go on TTT extended DVD...instead of ROTK..
i know that they moved the flashback gollum has (when he kills deagol and steals the ring) from TTT to ROTK

Shelob wasnt put into the two towers because there (quoted from Peter Jackson..cant find where though! :C ) "wouldnt be enough for Frodo and Sam to do in the third film"
which..is correct...(if you read the book)... they hardly appear at all in the book until the end...
