The Way Of The Marine

Discussion of shooting styles
Just to those without a sense of humour: Read no further, you won't get it.

I've noticed that there's two base styles of Marine:

Human Aimbot:

They are always dead on target, and they fire in bursts.

Spray and Pray:

These guys are more dangerous to the walls, and random structures than to the aliens themselves, these are they type that empty a clip from an LMG full auto and can't even kill a skulk because of the fact they're blinded by the Muzzle flash.

There's also sub-catagories of each:

The Rambo:

This Marine will either be some l337 dude or a total newb, he'll run around and either kill everything in his path or die at the first skulk.
You can never depend on the Rambo to take Phase gates unless he feels like it, he'll generally wander the levels on a "Bug hunt" and is generally useless unless your team is winning, the moment you start to lose he's the first one to start screaming: "Eject the commander!"

He is also the one that stands in base for 5 minutes asking for a shotgun/JP, or HMG/HA.

The Grunt:

This marine will stand around in base drooling until you give him orders and then he'll follow them to the death.

The Thinker:

This one is a mixture of the other two, he'll follow orders but generally he'll wander in and out of base until you tell him to go somewhere(I do this, I'll kill stuff but generally stay close to base until given something to do)

The Scout(Also called The Ninja):

This is the type of Marine that'll run around the map and can somehow get past 3 skulks, 2 fades, and 5 Sensory chambers without being detected.

The Engineer:

For some reason this Marine gets immense pleasure from constructing things, if you need something built this guy will be there .000003 seconds before you ask him to.

The Knifer:

This guy is either totally useless, or Almost useless... he'll abjectly refuse to do anything other than knife the enemy and their buildings.
See Also: Spray And Pray

Generally your team will be composed of:(In an 18 man game, 9v9)

4 Thinkers
1-2 Scouts
with Rambos filling up the remainder.

How to deal with each Type:

The Thinker:

Give him an Objective and he'll do it, reward him with JP or HA/HMG whichever he prefers; Also, always make sure to send as many thinkers together as possible(They will weld each other)

The Ninja:

Jetpacks are his best friend, give him his weapons of choice which are typically a welder and HMG, once in a while you'll get one that likes shotguns.
He's also the type that you can depend on to be in a vent/room near the hive and build those TF and Siege cannons for you.

The Rambo:

Depending on the type of rambo you get, and how many you have you can either let them run with stock stuff(generally the best Idea) or you can give them HMG/JP(Don't bother giving him HA and a welder, he'll never weld anyone)

The Engineer:

Give him welders, he'll happilly weld everything in your base for the entire match... He also likes Grenade Launchers(Although whether or not he can use them depends on what aiming style he uses).

Groupings:

- Typically you can group Ninjas and Thinkers together, they work well together; The thinker distracts the enemy while the Ninja sneaks in behind and builds that TF/Siege Combo.
- Thinkers will act as the Engineer sometimes, if you need an extra one they'll do it.
- Rambos: You can try to group them, but they're the type that's likely to run off if they see a skulk and not inform the rest of the squad.

Feel free to add to this.

    The Oblivious:

These marines apparently play NS with the sound off while also watching TV. They ignore all commander orders, will get full ammo even when the base is under attack, will continue building a structure as the other guys with them start firing at the 4 incoming skulks, and will fire at all enemy structures even when their team is yelling at them to not alert the aliens.

dont forget the tech whiners who don't leave the base until after they have hmg and ha and full ammo or until the aliens come to the base and kill them.

There's also the page (similar to the engineer) he just gets a welder and runs along behind the ha guy welding him constantly

The Tech whiners fall under the Rambo Sub-category.

    Haha, funny stuff.

    The Defender:

Just never leaves base or any expansion and will cycle between them all if he has a PG.

    The Complainer
Sits in the base and complains constantly as he believes no one is doing anything right, only stops complaining (momentarily) when you start following his orders. Useful suggestions sometimes given out, sometimes not.

    Or

May follow marines into combat, but when killed complains that the rest of the team sucks which caused him to die, despite the fact he died and killed nothing either.

    The Sprinter
Follows the commanders orders and everything, except for using phase gates. Prefers to sprint to various locations rather then using the phase gate.

    The Egomaniac
Believes he is the best player in the world, everyone else sucks, you must listen to him, blames others for losses. Trash talks after every kill, or laughs whenever a teammate is killed. Believes either bad luck or hacking killed him. Sometimes these guys are good, sometimes they are average, sometimes they suck and have problems. Somewhat related to the complainer.

    The Aspiring Singer
Just sings over the voicecomm, or in most cases attempts to.

The Self-thinker (similiar to rambo, but secures areas rather then just running around killing)
Will run off to complete "objectives" before they are assigned. Locking down nodes/hives, etc. Mixed blessing, sometimes stubborn (refuses to do anything unless you secure the area he has locked down). However in many cases useful (can hold off the entire alien team from taking a hive single handed) and just waits patiently until you drop a PG or send backup. Also may not follow orders if he belives they are bad, and will proceed to do what he belives should be done. However in many cases also a viable strategy (not doing stupid things).

    The Wuss
Extremely afraid to die, will not proceed unless he is absolutely sure of his safety.

    The Miner
    Must secure the node.

Well I suppose I should go over the types of commanders now:

There are many different types of commanders and to go over them all would take too long, I'll go over the most Popular Choices:

    The Strategist:

This guy has complex strategies for every possible situation, the only problem is if you die his strategy falls apart and he gets flustered(This used to be me).

    The über-techer:

Goes all out on upgrades and just gives out general orders(Ie: Attack Eclipse, but stay in a group), generally by the time the aliens are starting to fortify the second hive everyone has HA/HMG and level 3 Weapons Upgrades(Level 1 or 2 Armor Upgrades are in the works).

    The Turret Happy:

This one seems to believe the best offense is a good turret farm... Nuff said.

    The Inept:

They've comm'd a lot, but they still don't get it and they generally insist they're doing a good job.

    The Inexperienced:

They'll ask the other people in the game what they think they should do, generally they show an earnest willingness to learn, and they will listen to polite suggestions.

    The RP spender:

Jumps in the com chair and blows all the initial funds on random crap before f4ing.

How can you guys forget this one?

    The Humper:

    Humps the armory to death.

I'm actually closer to that, it depends on how well I know the commander(Some commanders will get very annoyed if you wander off to an undefended hive).

    Commander types-

    The RTS maniac/Dictator
Used to RTS games, does not realize that the marines are people, not computer controlled units. And treats them this way, marines must follow every movement and command to the letter or get yelled at. Does not realize that some rooms are harder to hold then it appears on the comm view (elevation changes, small hiding spaces etc.) Expects his marines to be the best in the world, does not realize that marines don't always kill skulks 1 on1, and that sometimes 3-4 can die to one skulk.

    The over-optimistic
Similiar to dictator, does not realize that the marine units are human. Expects them to clear out walls of chambers all the while holding off the entire alien team when there fades using only lmgs. Expects the impossible.

    The Nomad
Relocates at the start. Prefers to recycle and move bases rather then saving them. Useful if your team is really aggressive (sometimes your marines hate defending, sometimes they hate attacking)

    The Rusher
    Self-explanatory there.

    The Horder
Dooes not spend resources very well, lets the R pile all up. While sometimes a saving up a strategy, it is usually all wasted on something moments later, such as 10 turrets in a room.

(can't think of a interesting title)
Never informs the team that the CC is under attack, does not tell people to weld it. Only gets out at the last moment to shoot the skulk, but dies, and CC goes down. Does not believing in dropping backup CC even if resources is in the hundreds.

    The Weird Spender
Either spends 100 R all at once, or doesn't spend at all.

    The Egomaniac
Believes he is the best, marines must not be doing a good job. Brags of insane win ratios (60 wins no losses, I've never lost, etc.) Sometimes good, sometimes average, sometimes just plain bad.

    The Turtler
Believes a strong defense will win the game

    The Bull
Believes a strong offense will win the game

    The Game-Extender
In the brink of losing will build new base in really weird place (usually a vent, no onos) Thus prolonging the game as the aliens try to get in.

    The Game-Finisher
Recycles when the end is in sight, useful to prevent aliens from just racking up kills (leaving the spawn portals only, gasing/bombing for 1 hour, etc.) or sometimes just gives up too soon.

    The Single-Minded
You must secure that area, will never give-up trying.

    The Flexible/over flexible
Changes plans when the current one is not working. Sometimes changes plans to much.

    Poor Decision Maker
Is not able to decide upon a plan, or base placement. (yes i've seen guys build and recycle a single turret 5 times just to put it in the right spot)

    The Weak-Willed
Caves in to the slightest bad comments from his marine team. If one person starts calling him a newb to drop hmgs and etc. he will do it.

    Supply King
    Drops insane amounts of medpacks/ammo

    The chair hog
Wishes to comm only to allow the sweet leather chair to grace his behind. Does nothing, just sits in the comm chair sleeping.

'OMG, whaaaaahhh RUN! AAaaargggh, he nearly got me! Whooahh'

'They're killing our hive, aaarrrgghhh, some marines trying to knife me, whhhaaaahhhh, that was close, wooooo here they come again!!.. aaarrghhh'

    Mister Boring

This is the guy who speaks in a monotone voice over the voice comm, his voice is so boring that it just sounds like a continuous hum on your speakers. You can't make out anything he says, it's always drowned out by the sound of your computer fan. He's responsible for putting your team to sleep.

    Mister Foreign Language

He can't speak english to save his life, yet loves to join 'English Speaking Only Servers' and then decides to go commander and shout orders in a language that nobody understands.

You shouldn't allways look down on Knifers. I know a real good knife user who racked up over 50 kills with the knife in only one day.
The types of knifers I loath are the ones who wont switch weapon even if their teammates are getting killed on the other side of the room and a quick burst of lmg could save them. Or even worse the ones that runs around with the knife out and stabs in the air telling all the aliens in the area that a n00b is on the way.

    The Marksman
Wont switch from the gun untill the its either empty or the skulks are close enough to pat. Great if they got epileptic fingers and a dead on aim. Not so good if they Spray and Pray and use the gun even if they are in winding corridors.

I try to be the first kind of marksman but you have to ask my teammates if I am or not
My standard method of attacking (and hopefully killing ) fades is to charge them while emptying out the gun and switching to lmg when I'm close enough.
    Which leads me to:

    The Charger
Will attack anything that moves and things that only moves and some things that doesn't move. Good at taking out gorges and, if you have enough of them in a group, killing fades. Also good at blowing the groups cover by trying to kill the RC before an outpost in enemy land has been built. Will also charge down any WoL no matter the size. Often related to the knifer.

LOL you guys forgot about the most annoying one of all:

    The Siren

The siren is extremely dangerous because she can mesmerize other marines with her call. She continually yaps and yaps and yaps on the voicecomm about nothing; completely meaningless dribble. Or she'll sing a stupid song over and over again; this includes terribly executed freestyle rap. She will spam any converted .wavs that she has. ANY marines that have not installed a MUTE BIND will be susceptible to her call and will turned into zombies that constantly moan into the voicecomm things like, "SHUT UP! SHUT UP!" "OMG WILL YOU SHUT YOUR MOUTH!" "IM GOING TO KILL YOU IF YOU DON'T SHUT UP" "OH GOD PLEASE SHUT UP!" Zombified marines lose their edge in combat turning any HA/HMG into a skulk's wet dream. Parasite becomes lethal because zombified marines are unaware of their health slowly ticking down. Even if you're not zombified you are still afflicted because even if you mute the siren, you will hear her moaning minions who aren't bad people just guys that wanna play a nice game of ns and forgot to bind a mute feature. God help you if you run into a siren.

I'm part Human Aimbot and part spray and pray. I point and burst, point and burst but that is uneffective if you are getting rushed by two skulks. Quite often I find that when skulks travel in packs they get overconfident and run at you in a straight line, so a controlled spray with no need to pray is effective there. I'd like to introduce a new firing style called

    The Matador

because I spray and when they get close to lunge at me I step aside and say "OLE!!!" while keeping my gun trained on them. You know you've pulled a matador when you've caught a skulk in air and his dying body goes flying past you. It's great! I love doing that. You missed out/didn't explain the scout/ninja propperly

Scout/ninja attempts stealthy assults on the aliens eather for distraction or deadly 'stratigic' damage to the enemy.

    The final target is usually:

    Camp their respawn
    Shoot the hive then hide
    Knife down a res tower
    Kill the gorge
    Kill defence chambers

What I like best is a flexible MARINE, one that can take the role of anything.... Yes, including the siren when I don't like the rest of the team and want to get brain freeze....

    But anyways for commander

    Mr. Transportation-

Must build a phase gate, EVERYWHERE, even if its just to the hall way outside of your base. WIll drop a phase gate in a hive and expect it to be enough to hold it. Useless in just about every way.

They will only trust people they play with (often joining servers together) They won't trust anyone else but themselves or guys they know to do something. This often results in equipment neglect to other players or constant booting others out of comm chairs. Or perhaps massive swearing because you joined the team you wanted, but they wanted there friend to come to that team.

Interesting, the only sirens I've met are little boys with high-pitched voices.

Hrmm, Im part Thinker/Rambo/ninja/Builder and Wuss (If all is lost, I run and hide like a little baby) And if in at a hive, Ill quietly stay put, hidden as best as I can be, and wait for the comm to notice my text, and pray to god he doesnt drop any building when theres a skulk around (Actually managed to Jetbo/Ninja (Jetpack rambo variation) Up top of Great Viaduct, a fade shot some acid at me, then decided that he would take a walk and completely forgot about me. Anyway, I asked the comm for a TF and sieges, and waited for the res, keeping hidden. Soon as the res was ready, I mic informed my comm that all was clear (I kept a constant lookout and attentive ear for any spawning/redeeming/movement chamber aliens) and started to build, my building was interrupted about 10 times building the TF by a spawning skulk, redeeming fade, or movement chamber lerk/skulk/fade even a gorge stopped by, but nobody noticed me. Got the TF up, then did the same with the sieges when teh comm had the res, but only built them just to full (But not completed) and got 2 up, then all hell broke loose at base, and I thought that spending more res on my mini siege would cost us our homebase, so I finished the sieges (2 in total) And told the comm to start scanning the hive. After about a minute, I started to see the little blue circles of death coming towards me, and a lerk flew up to investigate, We had a dogfight, I retreated, and decided to run away like the sissy girl wuss I was (being on about 30 Hp) Comm dropped me some meds, and informed me that our TF was being eaten, I fly up in true Jetbo style, zip right over the lerk, nad start to fall onto him, land on his head (BAD move) and he just looks up and chomps me, then eats the TF and sieges. Luckily the comm had already given up any chance of a comeback (due to a team full or Rambos/Grunts/Oblivious) So he wasnt too mad with me, just a BL mate, nice try.

    Oooohh forgot to mention,

    teh n00b

teh n00b is a race all of its own. While he may be closely related to the oblivious, the rambo, and the Knifer (the bad kind) He is also a griefer or unfathomable magnitude. He wont build anything, even if ordered, he wont go anywhere, even if ordered, In fact, he will most likely go in the opposite direction. This is not bacause he disagrees with the commanders orders, but simply because he is just there to cause strife, and ppossibly give the commander a heartattack, stomach ulcer, or a psychotic episode. and if his teammates are being killed, he will back away, wait untill they are dead, then show great prowess in killing all the attackers, only to either suicide after being parasited, run back to base to stock up on ammo, or run off to a dark corner to play with his family, the co*kroaches. While he is very similar to the oblivious, the oblivious may sometimes try to play for the team, teh n00b will always play against the team.

because I spray and when they get close to lunge at me I step aside and say "OLE!!!" while keeping my gun trained on them. You know you've pulled a matador when you've caught a skulk in air and his dying body goes flying past you. It's great! I love doing that. Be sure to say "OLE!" on the server so your compadres know you pulled a matador!

Haha, I do this sometimes. I never tought of saying OLE!, but maybe I will now.

    The Milli Vanilli

If you don't wan't to dodge a skulk when it lunges in the air, jump at it instead as you kill it. If you smack bodies with the dead skulk in air, you have successfully performed the Milli Vanilli. I discovered that one today! DON'T YOU KNOW ITS TRUE!? OOH!! OOH!! OOOH!! I LOVE

He can't speak english to save his life, yet loves to join 'English Speaking Only Servers' and then decides to go commander and shout orders in a language that nobody understands.

i am wut crazed monk on a mission said..

    a self thinker

i think for myself.. wutever the commander lacks i fill it in.. i rally troops for a good cause ie securing a hive... while he is buzy getting other stubborn guys ot move.... i get **** and stubborns ometiems too.. cuz if ive risked my skin to get to a hive and he makes a TF an RT and 2 STs BEFORE a phaes.. i get pretty ticked.. because if we die.. we're screwed
