The end of john wayne heroics?
From the look of it, This mod is turing into a "My way or the Highway" situation, in which if a experianced vet, a guy who knows what he's doing, or has a style that works better on his own, will get brutally punished by the commander and team for not folowing directions.

I think that a little bit of individualism ought to be encouraged, kindof like kudos. If a guy does good on his own, give him a cookie. If a guy follows orders, give him a cookie. If a guy screws around and messes up the efforts of the team, but isn't productive on his own either, give him a waypoint to the middle of a herd of bobs.

I don't think bobs travel in herds. good idea though.

Oh there is -plenty- of individualism in this mod. Just be an alien. There ain't a commander on that team, and it's entirely possible for a single alien to bring about the destruction/end to the entire marine team.

Yeah i was just going to say, from my reading on the forum I've picked up the following, RTS'ers and Teamplayers shoud join the Marines. Lamers, death matchers, and solo heroes should join the aliens.

Not lamers, but definitely very skilled players and heroes. There's no side bias in NS, I know I fully intend to play both sides equally.

lamers are not welcome.

why should there only be some lamers on the alien team? I like teamplay but I also like to just play things my way (like in dm). and when I play things my way I do it where it is supoustoo be, etc. in dm mods or in this case the alien team (if it is as much dm as ppl are talking about).
btw, teamplay rulez

There is nothing in the game that will prevent a marine player from going off on his own and doing his own thing, but don't expect him to live very long, and in most cases, he shouldn't expect the commander to keep up with him and resupply him on demand.

Think about what happens in every alien vs. humans movie when the humans decide to split up. Would you really want to be that guy all alone on a dark ship with strange and deadly creatures running amok?

Hopefully, if the marine team is skilled and organized, the alien team, while more capable of solo heroics, will have to make some kind of joint effort if they want to win the map. Certainly not the same level of organization, but not pure cowboy tactics either. I also plan on playing both of them equally (unless I discover I really suck at one )

i like tha aspect of the mariens and the aliens look fun i mean you cant say no to runing down a hall at high speed to tear a marine thats pooping his pants
but you cant say no to laying down some covering fire and blowing the hell out of some aliens
both will be fun and i just had an idea cy in that forum

well, teamwork is good. i remember in this CS tournement i went to once. we were playing de_train(i think that's what it was) one round me and three of my teammates were pinned in the alcove at the bottom of the ladder. if we left it we would get shot by someone at the bomb site, then i saved the day because i saw the gap between over the coupling, and led my men through it.... only to be later taken down by friendly fire from a guy behind me who figured that it was easier to kill the enemy by shooting through me there's probably a lesson in there somewhere

There are times when lone wolf tactics are important for victory. But most of the time, the Commander needs his loyal followers.

I can tell you from experience that if the marines don't work as a team and follow the commander's directions, the marines will almost invariably lose.

isnt that the whole point?

reminds me kinda of vampire slayer gameplay. The slayers have all the guns, and work best when they stick together as a team. The vampires can jump really far and tear open slayers, so they're better off hiding around and picking off slayers by themselves.

I gave up favoring sides a year or so ago, it got pointless to always be the same thing every time you play, I just hit auto assign..

Can the commander see aliens that a player doesn't see? If so then the commander would be VERY important.

Im just concerned about the ability of a commander to relay his wishes to the team. It's not so much following orders as it is being able to easily say them.

A commander can't see aliens that aren't visible to his squad (fog of war), but there are later upgrades that help this. One is a motion sensor, the other (I believe) works sort of like Starcraft's ComSat.

As for relaying orders... he does it like any RTS player would. Lassos a few units and gives them a Move or Attack command. The selected marines see a waypoint appear, which disappears once they reach the destination.

Speaking of which... are there different movement options, like Starcraft's "move" vs. "attack-move" or straight-up "attack"?

Say, will stuff like waypoints or lassoing be automatic, or will it be like a "highly recommended suggestion" from the commander?
• MoleculorMoleculor Namer-of-Bob Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 9Members
Lassoing is in. Waypoints are in. It's up to the commander to use them if he wants, or just give verbal/text-based orders.

lazy: the commander can't MAKE his marines do anything... he can give them a waypoint order, but it's up to them to follow it. Of course, if they don't, they'll probably end up a side dish.
