Gamma fix! for those with dark monitors,

Windows xp, and nvidia vidcards
Apparently there is a bug in the 30.82 Detonator drivers for Windows XP. It will reset the gamma of your video card to the default when running certain programs. I was able to fix this problem by updating to the 40.72 drivers. NS now plays beautifully, and I can actually see things.

The download for the drivers is here.

They are not WHQL certified yet, but they work and supposedly increase your performance by up to 25%. All in all, I can't see any reason not to update to these drivers.

If you have Adobe Photoshop it installs a program into the Control panel called ADOBE GAMMA
Change the 2.25 to 1.25 that should birghten eveyrting up and have the same effect in game.

heh, thats what i've tried using (been usin that lovely prog for years) but regardless of what i set in adobe gamma (having dual monitors) NS resets all that :/

Try PowerStrip it changes your gamma settings not sure if it's "free" or not

Although this fixes my problem of the brightness being reset when exiting Natural Selection, it now creates a new problem. All the nvidia drivers since around 31.xx have caused the fps of GeForce2 users to drop dramatically. I have dropped from 100fps to 30fps. Most GF2 users use the 23.11 drivers as they give the best fps.

Although technically this isn't Natural Selections fault as it is a fault of the nvidia drivers, this doesn't solve our problem. I would really appreciate it if the NS developers could find a way around this nvidia bug as it does not effect CS so I assume there must be a way.

CS is my main game and at the moment it's a toss up between cs and high fps, or NS and low fps in all games.

The only other solution I can think of is to use Ctrl+Alt+Del to exit NS so that it doesn't reset my brightness. But that's hardly a desireable solution.

Please fix it NS guys and I will come back to this new wonderful game.

P.S. This effects Win2k too (what I use)

I've found if you run in OpenGL it's dark and if you run in D3D it's bright. I also find a performance hit in D3D so have a nice compromise.

The new driver does not fix my dark monitor problems.

I've tried using shareware Powerstrip and I can't fix it.

I've deleted the NS folders and still no fix.

I played NS once before on my system but this time when I tried to create a game, it darkened my monitor and I have no idea how to fix it. Any other suggestions to correct the problem? because I'm being turned off by NS very quickly.

    I'm running win2k on a comp with a 1.2ghz amd t-bird and geforce 2 mx400

What you guys need is a little program called PowerStrip.

Google it. It lets you change gamma correction on the fly with the use of a hotkey.

Map too light? Too dark? Just hit your hotkey, and you can change it instantly. The best part is that PowerStrip remembers which programs are set to which Gamma level... so maybe you want Q3 to be dark, but HL to be light... PowerStrip remembers.

Sorry I don't have a URL handy, but just search for powerstrip on google.

I either can set it to bright (dark areas STILL all the way dark) but now all the bright stuff blends me ;( Minimap and commander map just turn white too. ( using Nvidia gamma tools)

it's JUST **obscenity** up. The maps at least need more contrast. (I have to mention that my monitor seems kinda defective... it's way dark without software help)

I installed the 40.72's (gf4) and it still didnt fix it. I found a site with older detonators on them and one of them worked for me. I have since gotten a new vid card, but try different drivers...hey, you never know

    Hey!

What I've been getting is some parts of some maps look black or transparent. Its only been happening in the last 3 weekes or so. I don't know if its the servers or me. It doesn't happen all the time.
Heres what tanith looks like at 1 point.

If I go to a different part of the map or even just change the direction I look all is back to normal...
    fyi: P4 2gb, nVidia geforce 2 mx/mx 400 /w 4.0.72 drivers.

    Any ideas??

Are you running NS in D3D mode ? I had the same problem on ns_tanith in D3D mode. I re-installed NS and got the 41.09 nVidia drivers and it doesn't do that anymore.

    Give it a go.

I believe I am. I'll check tonight. Something I noticed last night was that on 2 different servers one of the maps was fine and the other one was blinking and dark?? If it's my system shouldn't it be the same on all servers??
The servers were, I think, redphive and sniperlust. I'll have to check to see which was which.
  • HSantalHSantal Join Date: 2002-11-18 Member: 9179Members
    Hi.

I'm pretty sure it was the drivers. Monday night I connected to sniperlust and my display was blinking and dark and I could see through walls and around corners,if I was looking straight ahead.
I logged out and rolled back the video driver (WinXP), rebooted, logged back in. Poof, it was working fine. Tonight I'll try a server that I know was giving me grief and see what happens.

the drivers didnt work for me but i found a way to fix it. just go into your console and type in lightgamma 1 then after that type retry and reconnect to the server and it fixes it

if your fps dropped with the updated drivers take a look at your video card settings again, I noticed sometimes a driver install will reset the video settings to default, I would disable v-sync.
