Motion Tracking

take it off!
i play on vadakill's server which is a linux server so i havent seen motion trackin work for a long time.. Anyways the games are still fun. Motion trackin deadens a lot of the advantage skulks have like hiding since lag makes the blip show up a little bit after a skulk stops.

my idea: make a radar that blips like the aliens vs. predator one except on your minimap. I dont know whats coming in 1.1 but if you made that lil minimap the marines have actually turn when you turn (if you know what i mean) then the blips would help a lot. You would know a skulk is behind a wall but you wouldnt know if he was hiding high or low on the wall. It would help marines but not help them to the point skulks shouldnt even hide anymore

just my thoughts.

AL|ENS motion traker would be kinda cool but i think the mini map needs big time improving like rotating or puting a little arrow to show were you are

i play on a server with no motion tracking and dont even notice it is gone. i think the game is jusp fine without it. now, if you could replace motion tracking for friendly tracking, and have you and your teamtes appear on the marine map, that would be kick ****.

thats a great idea... i dont know how many times i heard a door open and wondered if it was a marine or alien.. Add your idea to my idea lol. I think friendly viewing should show up on the minimap without needin to upgrade

I tend to agree that motion tracking seems a bit cheap. Then again, I play almost exclusively aliens, so I'm biased
I'm not sure what to DO about motion tracking, but I think friendly tracking would be a great addition. It'd be nice (and make sense) to know where the rest of your elite space marine detatchment was

I guess I kinda wish that marines should be able to see each other on the minimap (themselves obviously included). It's just irritating that this wasn't added in tje first place, IMHO.

    And, a litle bit OT

I just thought of a brand new use for sensory chambers that could be programmed in eventually. Imagine if sensory chambers kept an area of a map invulnerable from sensor sweeps or moton tracking. Just a radius, like a Defense chamber. Maybe if a commander tried to sweep a sensory, the set area around the chamber would remain black and unseeable to anyone but a marine on foot, looking at it.

Tell me what you all think (or if this has already been suggested a bajillion times)!

I think friendly tracking would be "nice" but as useful as nightvision in counter-strike. No comm would ever research it unless he had an over abundance of RP's. Think about if you were comm, "hmm should I get 2 more turrets at cargo or should I research friendly tracking?"

So basically give marines hivesight? (Although on the minimap wouldn't be bad since it wouldn't be as effective.)

I think the idea was to make the marines rely on the commander.

And of course, if you remove motion tracking, then we're back to everyone accusing "wallhacker!"

That and "friendly tracking" sounds just plain fruity.

I think motion tracking is unfair, I've always played without motion tracking cause there are mainly linux servers close to where I live. The other day I tried to play on a windows server and... it's silly how easy it is to kill skulks when you know they are coming.

Motion Tracking is EXTREMLY unfair, I would not miss it if it so was removed alltogether. (I didn't even try playing as an alien on that server).

Motion Tracking makes it impossible for the aliens to do anything what so ever unnoticed,... some of the easiest marine games I've ever played.

Every day someone makes this topic, every day this topic dies. It's like some kind of twisted zombie thread.

Minimaps are sprites, they are static images. Displaying the information on them doesn't work well. They don't update properly for commanders, and they'd just be a big mess for marines.

Stealing ideas from Aliens is a no-no. The more similarities exist, the more likelihood that Fox will roll the laywers in. Fox is run by jerks, and I only say jerks because I know anything else would be filtered. The 'aliens vs. marines' concept is too vague for them to claim infringement with, but putting in the same style motion tracking is just giving them ammo to sue the hell out of Flayra.

i think motion tracking is gonna be changed so it only works within a radius of an observatory.

I'd like to see motion tracking of enemies be removed, moreso because I think it would make the game more exciting. As a marine it's not really that fun to have a built-in 'wall hack' so I know where all the enemy players are. It takes away the edge and suspense. Any good marine doesn't need moton tracking anyway. You know the ambush spots and you can hear them move.

As has been mentioned, when playing on linux servers, I don't even notice it gone.

    Regards,

    Savant

This is pointless. Nobody will build observatories in 1.04 anyway. Scanner sweeps are way too expensive, and the phase gates have no health anymore. This means 25 (for the ob) + 45(for the upgade) just for MT. 70 is WAY too expensive, and no one will research it. Flayra won't even need to spend time fixing it for linux servers.

edit: accidently wrote 1.03 before hehe

vadakills server that i play on has been 1.04 for a while now. People still research motion trackin even though it doesnt work. Not noobs either they just dont know its broke.. They see the price and they guess its worth it..
  • TraneTrane Join Date: 2002-02-01 Member: 148Members
Motion tracking is easily the most useful upgrade early in the game though, and commanders are going to use it even if it is a little expensive. You need all the help you can get securing that first hive, and motion tracking gives a rather large helping hand, certainly worth the rp's. The notion to take out motion tracking is kinda silly, espeacially since they havn't even stated a good reason for taking it out yet. They say its unfair. But, I've never seen it unbalance the game. Sure, if they get it early on, you dont stand much chance as a skulk... but isnt the whole point of the game to deal with difficulties and overcome. As soon as you get that second hive up and have fade, that motion tracking is nearly done being helpful, now they need fire power. The point is motion tracking has a role in the game, and really is a balanced viable option.

I saw posted somewhere that the players minimap was supposed to work exactly like the commanders minimap.

The only real gripe I have with motion tracking is it's viewed as a permenant upgrade rather than an effect that has to be sustained by the continued presence of an observatory. Therefore once it's obtained there's no way for aliens to remove or counter this advantage. It is especially frustrating when trying to break out of a hive lock-out since hives trip motion tracking on the commander's minimap as well as for the marines on the ground - all stealth goes right out the window.

Whether you want to limit motion tracking to a set radius around the observatory or not, I feel if the observatory is destroyed then motion tracking should go with it.
  • GuspazGuspaz Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 2862Members, Constellation
Aliens who can't deal with Motion Tracking have nobody to blame but themselves.

Aliens have hive sight and paresite as advantages, both being free might I add, while Marines get motion tracking.

Here's a hint: Motion tracking tracks MOTION (A novel idea, no?), so if you DON'T MOVE, it won't spot you. It's still entirely possible to lie in wait for unsuspecting marines, and if as a team the aliens attack from both directions at once (As they should in ALL attacks if possible), the marines probably won't even notice one of the forces coming towards them.

For the record people, just because you're not good enough to counter something in a game does NOT mean it is "unfair" or "unbalanced".
  • OWAOWA Join Date: 2002-12-22 Member: 11322Members
Which, in all honesty, is what you should be doing anyway, SKULKING and LERKING in corners and shadows waiting for the marines to go PAST you so you can get at thier backs. It's not hard to figure out when the marines have motion tracking and adjust your behavior accordingly.

45 resources is nothing to scoff at, that's weapons1 and armor1 with 5 ticks left over.

I do think that tracking should go down if the obs falls, I'm not sure how viable this is code-wise, but then again, does it really matter that much? I know if my obs ever falls as a comm that my first priority is to rebuild it so I have access to emergency becon and phase gate dropping, and if I can't rebuild it then there's obviously larger problems in the game that are preventing me from doing it.

Friendly tracking... meh... I don't think so. Too much like Hivesight,

As for whoever said that no one would build obs any more due to increased scan cost (3 rps! oh no!) and lowered phase gate HP: forget it. I've played a lot of NS and I think I've seen maybe one marine win that never involved a phase gate.

Hmm..this is what I'm going to say:

Why must the Marines get hurt more and more? When I play as aliens I don't care if the Marines has motion tracking. If you have a little thing called "skill" you can get around it. The Marines need an edge in the game and that is why motion tracking is there. Myself, I don't see Motion Tracking that often (it's been a while since i've played), but when it's researched it helps the Marines. It cost 20+45= 65 resources to get motion tracking. So I think for that much resources spent, a MT upgrade should cover the entire map. MT is part of the game, so is the f4 key, and BB/AR spam and also grenade spam. Don't like it? Then just deal with it or leave to find another server or again F4 and wait for the game to end.

    That's all, bye.

i dont think its unfair i think it takes the fun out of the game.. Marines lose any suspense they have and aliens lose the chance of having that great moment when u drop on a marine and surprise him. Lag makes the alien blips stay a lil longer than they should. The only possible way u can hide is if u camp a spot u think marines are gonna walk by. No more hearin marine footsteps and runnin to hide with motion. No more worrying about sneaky aliens. A lot of fun just goes out the door imo.

Like i said, a great alternative would be makin the minimap rotatable and have the blips on there instead. You would know when movement is near you and where it is. YOu just wont know if the skulk is hiding high or low on the wall so it'll still be excitin for both sides..

I like your alternative idea for MT, but having blue blips on my screen is really sweet, compared to having to scan the minimap constantly.

If they take away motion tracking they should take away parasite also.

You can't have your cake and eat it too.

The thing I find odd about motion tracking, is that is has been constantly re-emphasised by the dev team that the TSA and the Kharaa are different. That is why you will never see many things implemented for one side, because they exist on the other. And the way I see it, motion tracking is simply hive sight. Better in many respects, as the enemies dont even need to be parasited.

IMHO, the TSA should not have 'hive sight' motion tracking. It should be limited to their minimap (as that is their EXISTING technology).

Just have motion tracking track all motion, enemy and friendly alike.

and what? give fox something to sue for? (though I doubt it) I think its fair right now except u still have it after the observatory is gone. It should be out when the obs is down but you shouldint have to research it after if u put it back up.

    my 2 cents
