Ps based water

<div class="IPBDescription">And i don't mean rain</div>a couple of nights ago i was watching the last episode of Alias in series 1, and in it there was this scene where water was rushing down a hallway. and that got me thinking about PS based water.

<a href="http://www15.brinkster.com/psmouse/flowtest.zip" target="_blank">http://www15.brinkster.com/psmouse/flowtest.zip</a>

the first map (flowtest) shows water coming out of a pipe then running along the floor, and water running along a mini hallway that has a couple of obsticles

the second map (flowtest_final) is a small tribute to the above mentioned scene from alias, just walk to the door with the flickering light, and you'll figure out what to do after that <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->

BTW these aren't heavily tweaked maps, the water doesn't push you, there's no sound and so on.

have fun <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo-->

    Sounds good. But for me there's something up with the link.

    (You just need to paste it into another browser window Jedi.)

    This sounds fascinating. I will check this out when I get home shortly.

    Works now, and is very cool! I may have to find a use for this. <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

    It certainly looks really cool.  I think that with some various tweaks, it could look really good.  I know I told you this last night, but you need to get a better sprite.  A good water, animating sprite would probably make it look 10 times better as it is right now.  Very nice.  <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

    I'd pretty much agree with Greedo here, a better sprite could make all the difference.  But I love the way that you see water dripping through the cracks in the door before it opens.  I can just imagine what this would look like if you threw in a rising func_water as the particles flowed in.

    i like how in the final, it seeps through the crack a little then burst, but onthing i knoticed, is taht if u run forward a bit (to the middle) it arches right over u, water doesnt bounce like that, also it just kind of ends.. and what geedo said bout the sprite, but other then those minor things, its a great concept and can really go places

    Wow! Flowtest_final was really cool! I love it but the suggestions above would really help out (espically the boucing water)

    as i said in my first post, these maps are not tweaked to get them looking perfect, it's just a concept. if i was going to put it in a map that was meant to be played, i would also put some trigger_pushes in, find a better sprite and add some lower bouncing sprites so that the 'water' wouldn't bounce over you.

    but hey, you all seem to like it, so i'm happy <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

    BTW i wouldn't mind seeing some versions of the maps that have been tweaked to make them look better

    you know what you could probably do, if u make it so they hardly bounce, appearing that they glide across the floor, you could make a fog..

    Some guys in IRC wanted to see this. I thought everyone else might too <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I'm probably a little slower than most people since I couldn't figure what I should do. I walk to the door, there's a small pause and then the door breaks down in pieces and reveals the wall behind it. After that, nothing. Tried walking every inch of the floor, using walls and doors, but still, nothing happens - no water, no cracks appearing and other stuff people mention here.

    next time include an info mapinfo to get the map listed.
    dont give the particles a "from-to" livespan, thats dust and not water.
    hl crashes when i compile this. damn ps.
    keep on it.

    maybe this is the right place to ask....

    i cant run it <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

    if i start it from hammer hl (not ns) gets loaded and nothing happend
    if i try to start it directly from ns i cant see it in my maplist <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

    well thats a permanent problem
    the ns shortcut dont work for me (starts ns background and fonts but i can only load hl maps)
    i must load hl first and go over the custom game menu to load ns correct
    but then i cant open many maps <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

    its not in the maplist because he has not put an info_mapinfo in it.
    to play it open a lan game with any map and type:

    map flowtest
    map flowtest_final

    in console to load and play it.

    Hrm, thats a real pity. I'll go try and fix it.

    [EDIT] oh, and if you guys didn't notice, I made this in July with the NSTR2, so I'm not too surprised about it not working

    [EDIT] I can't get them to wrk, it seems I'm going to have to rebuild them from scratch

    I just tried this out. I can't say that I like the ones where it jumps out of the pipe, or the one when it breaks down the door (though the drips coming through the cracks in the door was pretty good). It just didn't look much like water.

    However, the room with the grate and the flowing particles beneath actually looks superb. That's some nice ps work Mouse <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I'm sure that the other two can be tweaked to appear more realistic. Has anyone seen the Making Of Metal Gear Solid 2 where it showed the water effects when they smash down the corridors after Snake? They took it out of the final game, but it looked amazing.

    it seems to work if you load the map twice, least, it did for me
  • HeistHeist Join Date: 2002-11-09 Member: 7922Members
    Hmmm.. I tried to run it and the map loaded ok but there was no water or particle systems.. the door broke after about 10 seconds but other than that nothing happened. Is something wring with my PS?

    i also cannot get it to work...

    [edit]
    after more experimentation, i've gotten flowtest_final to work 1 out of every 8 times for some reason...

    i loaded up ns_bast and noticed that the env_custom_particle systems in it didn't work till the round began, so i figured i'd just add info_team_starts to see if that did anything, but apparently not :/ Since the round was always started in NSTR, that's why it worked in NSTR but not NS perhaps?

    Also, turning on Developer 2, I noticed that NS doesn't even try to precache the Sprite until AFTER the particle system has been triggered... perhaps this is a bug in NS's particle system itself? That would explain funny particle system occurances, like bast sometimes having steam in the readyroom and sometimes not...

    Well i had the same problem but i waited for few minutes before walking to the door and it worked.
    So get a snack while the map loads and then walk for it =) It takes while before it loads the particle effect
    or something.

    I had the problem where the door breaks and nothing happens, no ps anywhere. To make it work, I had to load it with the NSTR 2, then it worked.

    I hate to beat a dead horse, but I've been trying to do something like this and its very frustrating. Granted I know next to nothing when it comes to mapping but I'd just like to create particle effects like this. The only thing I've ever been able to get working was one of the example maps from one of the NSTR's that already had a working fog effect. Unfortunately the only thing I was able to edit in it was the size and shape of the fog effect (there had to be some func_illusionary and the fog would take that shape). Changing the sprite, changing the number of particles, the size of them (done in worldcraft), all had no effect. Why am I stupid?
