What's Your Primary?

LMG or Pistol
(this post applies mostly to fighting skulks)

Everyone knows that your LMG goes in the "primary" weapon slot and the pistol belongs in "secondary" but you don't have to use them that way all the time. For a while I had been using up my lmg clip and then quickly switching to my pistol when theres no time for a reload. This is very common and very effective. But I started to realize (mostly from watching other marines) that when you are in a long range situation (viaduct hive, tram tunnel, crew quarters) it's better to have your pistol out first and finnish off with your lmg. This way you take a big chunk out of the enemy before they get to you and then use the lmg to spray and pray to get the last few points of damage in. The pistol is so accurate that it is very efficient using it this way. Let us all know if you do this, will do this, or have done this and how well it works for you.

When I walk around my pistol is always in front of me, but I don't see any others do that very often.

I see a few people go around with their knifes out as primary. I normally use LMG but my views are gradually changing to using pistol first. I'll have to test it for myself though.

I prefer to use the lmg first since i have bad fps (old computer) and cant aim that well when the game runs chunky
But when a lerk sits down a long hallway i always put out my pistol and trigger it as fast as i can

Depends on the situation. On maps with long corridors and good sight the Pistol always goes first. On cramped maps with alot of turns and many nice hiding spots I always go for the LMG first.

Most often it's

1 Clip of LMG
1 Clip of Pistol
1 Clip of Pistol - Think the pistol have a faster reload time, not certain though.

When moving around the map, its usually best to have your LMG drawn incase of a surprise ambush. When static, or defending, its good to have your pistol handy to take out long range skulks.

Shotgun is my primary.

LMG first, for me, but only if there close to me. Pistol if there about 20 meters away, then kill em' off with LMG.
If im being rushed by a fade or onos, I use my LMG, pistol, then knife if im really desperate.

if i'm looking down a long corridor, pistol

in tighter areas, LMG

i'll use my LMG more often that pistol, because sometimes with pistol i'll land 10 shots between the eyes, sometimes 1 shot on the tip of his tail. I'm too erratic with that thing.

if i run out of LMG midfight ill whip out pistol and use that.

if im fighting a fade i empty a pistol into him, then empty LMG. after that... well, after that i don't live much longer if the fade has half a brain whatever i can reload first is what i use.

pistol is a great primary when coupled with shotgun or hmg

Most commanders I've played under don't hesitate to give me a shotgun when I ask. I usually run around with a pistol drawn, then switch to my shotgun when the start gaining ground on me.

LMG when I'm on the move, usually switch to pistol when I'm stationary defending.

I think that those peoples have played CS a lot, because you can move a bit faster if you have knife on your hand.
In NS it doesn't increase speed at all. Those peoples have just used to do so. Not very good idea in NS thought.

my primary:
base defence: pistol then lmg
assault: pistol followed by knife although if im lazy lmg.
vs skulks: pistol if im really tired/drunk/stimmed then followed up by lmg
vs fades: lmg, finish off with pistol (if in tight corners retreat to reload lmg and focus on lmg)
vs onos: lmg & reload (in group or if the onos is retreating then ill wham my pistol clip into her too)
vs lerk:(umbra) lmg followed by knife, if retreating snipe with pistol
(no umbra) pistol followed by lmg
vs gorge: (lvl 1, probably pistol > knife or pistol > lmg ; depending on the alertness of the gorge)
(lvl 2, pistol with uber distance followed by lmg with as much distance as possible)
(lvl 3, lmg bomber dive), (for all gorge, if building defences dive over defences and bomber dive with the lmg, pistol finish if you really really cant aim point blank).

...god help me

the pistol is VERY underated! it's 20 damage as opposed to LMG's 10, it's more accurate and i dunno about anyone else, but i tend to do less "panic fire" when rushed by skulks, with my pistol i feel i aim & line up shots more rarther than just let rip and hope i get them.

I also use the pistol for "sniping"

but back to the main question:

it depends what i'm up against, 90% of the time i use LMG for standard combat, but i have got into the habit when fighting a Fade of unloading 1 full clip at them then mouse wheel down and use my pistol as it's faster than reloading the LMG and every shot counts..
• MadJackMcJackMadJackMcJack Join Date: 2002-12-24 Member: 11467Members
I only ever use the pistol if I'm defending an area where I'm looking down a long corridor, in a vent (skulk can't dodge then), or if I'm out of LMG ammo/have no time to reload. Otherwise, my average accuracy against fast-moving targets demands that I use the LMG, so that the RoF and bullet-spread compensate somewhat.

However, since I'm increasingly becoming a wrench-monkey (the guy who keeps an eye on phased bases), I'll have a welder instead, so the pistol/LMG thing becomes irrelivent.

All I can really say though, is go with whatever feels better for you.

LMG = CQB
Pistol = Far range and backup

The I usally get trip mines for my pistol

I use pistol for long range, and I have a quick tap finger, tapping VERY quickly is extremely important when using pistol. So yeah pistol as primary, BUT when I get close to a door or entrance im reaching a corner, I switch to my lmg before crossing it and cross with my lmg in hand because lmg to me is much more suitable for such an environment. Then once im through the door, turned corner, or that entrance I switch back to pistol for the long range shooting or hall up ahead.

LMG is primary in any situation- I can't hit **** with the pistol so it's only ever a backup weapon. If I get a HMG or shotgun though, that changes...

Yeah.. the pistol has a big advantage. Everytime you click the button it hits exactly where your aiming(perfect for longer distancs). LMG tends to spray over long distances.

almost always pistol. As i very rarely rambo and as most comms i play with dont like me going away alone, god bless them , i find that unloading 10 shots with perfect accuracy in about 1-2 secs is very usefull. 9/10 the marines im going with have their lmgs out. By the time a skulk gets into the fight i guess hes on about 50hp if he ambushed us and pistol shots stop the skulk from relying on mariens praying to them. Or it might be that im crap with lmg

actually most of the time i'll use my pistol as my primary when i'm 1v1, or 2v1 skulks, my reasoning is kind of silly but i try to think as a skulk who thinks that if i'm using my pistol, my LMG is not reloaded and that my last resort if i run out of pistol bullets, is my knife. After i empty a magazine and if the skulk is still alive, 9/10 times they will rush me and then i'll pull out my LMG to finish it off.

Yeah Pistol is pretty powerful when you got max weapon upgrades, you do 26 damage

Usually the LMG... with lag, my pistol seems to fire 3-4 times, and then all of a sudden the magazine is empty

My usual means of dealing with skulks in a laggy situation (most of the time for me, 56k lovers unite!) involves getting myself a fire lane (open hallway, entrance to a room, or something where, most of the time, a skulk is going to come running along the ground. I line the gun up along the "incoming skulk" route, and wait for it to come to me. Pistol works fine for longer range plinking and emergency kills (about half my fade kills are with a handgun, since it drops 200 points of damage in about 2 seconds, and they're usually only half beat up when they start to retreat), but in any kind of CQB it's real handy to be able to dump 50 rounds really quickly into an established kill zone, since half the time the skulks are blinking around like crackrabbits because of the lag.

My preference is the same as alot of said.
Pistol in hallway then LMG if u miss. also big open areas.
LMG around corners and tight spaces then pistol.

I use my Lmg in cramped corridors and I use my pistol in a big are to sniper them and if they live I switch back to my lmg.

It depende on the situation. long ramge shots LMG close shot's handgun. I find this way is more accurate.
