LMG or Pistol
(this post applies mostly to fighting skulks)
Everyone knows that your LMG goes in the "primary" weapon slot and the pistol belongs in "secondary" but you don't have to use them that way all the time. For a while I had been using up my lmg clip and then quickly switching to my pistol when theres no time for a reload. This is very common and very effective. But I started to realize (mostly from watching other marines) that when you are in a long range situation (viaduct hive, tram tunnel, crew quarters) it's better to have your pistol out first and finnish off with your lmg. This way you take a big chunk out of the enemy before they get to you and then use the lmg to spray and pray to get the last few points of damage in. The pistol is so accurate that it is very efficient using it this way. Let us all know if you do this, will do this, or have done this and how well it works for you.

But when a lerk sits down a long hallway i always put out my pistol and trigger it as fast as i can
I charge fades going Pistol-LMG-Knife
I camp long hallways pistol-lmg
BlueGhost
Most often it's
1 Clip of LMG
1 Clip of Pistol
1 Clip of Pistol - Think the pistol have a faster reload time, not certain though.
If im being rushed by a fade or onos, I use my LMG, pistol, then knife if im really desperate.
in tighter areas, LMG
i'll use my LMG more often that pistol, because sometimes with pistol i'll land 10 shots between the eyes, sometimes 1 shot on the tip of his tail. I'm too erratic with that thing.
if i run out of LMG midfight ill whip out pistol and use that.
if im fighting a fade i empty a pistol into him, then empty LMG. after that... well, after that i don't live much longer if the fade has half a brain whatever i can reload first is what i use.
pistol is a great primary when coupled with shotgun or hmg
I think that those peoples have played CS a lot, because you can move a bit faster if you have knife on your hand.
In NS it doesn't increase speed at all. Those peoples have just used to do so. Not very good idea in NS thought.
base defence: pistol then lmg
assault: pistol followed by knife although if im lazy lmg.
vs skulks: pistol if im really tired/drunk/stimmed then followed up by lmg
vs fades: lmg, finish off with pistol (if in tight corners retreat to reload lmg and focus on lmg)
vs onos: lmg & reload (in group or if the onos is retreating then ill wham my pistol clip into her too)
vs lerk:(umbra) lmg followed by knife, if retreating snipe with pistol
(no umbra) pistol followed by lmg
vs gorge: (lvl 1, probably pistol > knife or pistol > lmg ; depending on the alertness of the gorge)
(lvl 2, pistol with uber distance followed by lmg with as much distance as possible)
(lvl 3, lmg bomber dive), (for all gorge, if building defences dive over defences and bomber dive with the lmg, pistol finish if you really really cant aim point blank).
...god help me
I also use the pistol for "sniping"
but back to the main question:
it depends what i'm up against, 90% of the time i use LMG for standard combat, but i have got into the habit when fighting a Fade of unloading 1 full clip at them then mouse wheel down and use my pistol as it's faster than reloading the LMG and every shot counts..
However, since I'm increasingly becoming a wrench-monkey (the guy who keeps an eye on phased bases), I'll have a welder instead, so the pistol/LMG thing becomes irrelivent.
All I can really say though, is go with whatever feels better for you.
Pistol = Far range and backup
The I usally get trip mines for my pistol
My usual means of dealing with skulks in a laggy situation (most of the time for me, 56k lovers unite!) involves getting myself a fire lane (open hallway, entrance to a room, or something where, most of the time, a skulk is going to come running along the ground. I line the gun up along the "incoming skulk" route, and wait for it to come to me. Pistol works fine for longer range plinking and emergency kills (about half my fade kills are with a handgun, since it drops 200 points of damage in about 2 seconds, and they're usually only half beat up when they start to retreat), but in any kind of CQB it's real handy to be able to dump 50 rounds really quickly into an established kill zone, since half the time the skulks are blinking around like crackrabbits because of the lag.
Pistol in hallway then LMG if u miss. also big open areas.
LMG around corners and tight spaces then pistol.
I usually shoot a little from my lmg pull out my pistol use whole clip and if they arent dead pull out my lmg again and finish them off.
