Natural selection steam release

Hello dear everyone,
As some of you might know, some survivors started to play gathers again on our dear and old natural selection 1.
All is well and working very nice cept we are having trouble finding players to play with at some time. I have no doubt that the game could still interest a certain population of players that might think the game as unplayable or too old right now. But surprisingly enough, it is still working like a charm and not at all disgusting to look at !

So my question to UWE would be: Do you think it is possible to have valve allows for the game to be released as a standalone game ? I don't know what it would take but the game is ready. So most likely just a contact at steam willing to help... Some mods made their ways through this process and were then played again for a while. Why not NS ?

This game is history (at least mine :D), it deserves more than to be forgotten.

Will be waiting for replies.
All the best,
Khelby

    How to install:
    1. Install Half-Life from Steam, assuming you have it purchased (10-20e)
    2. Get NS1 Installer: https://www.ensl.org/data_files/635
    3. for the lazy check #downloads

    HOW TO RUN:
    1) After install reboot steam and it should appear to your library automatically.
    :gorge: OR :gorge:
    2) create shortcut e.g. : "C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 70 -game "ns"

    Have fun! :gorge:  :gorge:

    Other stuff (OPTIONAL):
    1. You can install nL pack if you want less UI clutter:
    http://www.ninelegends.com/releases/9l-ns-pack/
    2. Custom NS1 client 3.2.1a can be downloaded here with some client fixes:
    https://github.com/Bacsu/NS

    Basic settings:

Good launch options: -freq 144 -noforcemaccel -noforcemparms
Should fix also "weird feeling mouse" issue!

    How to achieve over 60fps:

Create userconfig.cfg in your ns-folder or just put it in console (E.g. C:\steamgames\steamapps\common\Half-Life\ns) and add these lines to it:

    gl_vsync "0"
    fps_override "1"
    fps_max "125" //above 125fps makes lmg/hmg shoot faster

"good rate settings"(dunno are they good but better than defaults):
    rate "20000"
    cl_updaterate "102"
    cl_cmdrate "130" //5 over your fps
    ex_interp "0.08"(edited)

Yes please, this would make it so much easier for vets to get back into the game again.

The game could use two things tho:
    Customizable fov,
    Already included bots (http://rcbot.bots-united.com/)

@oma I'd recommend going to discord, since you usually have almost zero chance finding any ppl here.
    https://discord.gg/ZUSSBUA

Currently a new beta-patch was released by some players which allows the use of widescreen 16:9

The FoV is the same, but you can see more to the left and right. As far as I know they limited it to go further then 16:9 because otherwise you could check all corners just because you have a big screen - this would be unfair.

So you need to limit your resolution somewhat and might need to play with blackbars... which would mean 2560x1440

If there are issues go to #developement in the ns1 discord

Yeah i went there and just today left, they are trying to make the game competitive and some of these try-hards thought it was too unforgiving giving a bigger monitor/screen owners correct fov.
Instead they were suggesting to play with black bars, and i rather play ns2 then as i'm not really interested playing try-hard/competitive games. And i was told it was my problem as i bought 'niche' monitor, so no 21:9 fov will be supported by these community dev's unless 'niche' becomes standard and i mean standard in that sense that the dev himself buys a monitor with 21:9 ratio.

(The problem even with 16:9 is that it has that zoom which makes game harder than it should, unless playing with black bars.)

Well, if you want something then you might have to contribute yourself instead of demanding. Finding a solution which works for the - surely smaller - playerbase and not just for yourself.

Blackbars around the screen (also the top)... yeah it might not look that pretty, but you can play again and it is FAIR

Don't accuse the "community dev's" as you call them for being selfish, if you create an unfair advantage by using a monitor with insane FoV. Just because the dev's need to communicate that to you, there is a consensus that this would be OP.. just because they had to explain it to you, you shouldn't think that they're the soure of evil

Maybe you should be more grateful, that they even try and invest their sparetime to get this game going agian.

Who knows, it might be possible to play with a really higher FoV one day, but that requires some effort to overthink how you could make that game better and FAIR with it... You know... balancing or something like that

And yeah, the game was always competitive, even though you didn't notice it... since most ppl don't have fun in losing :)

you are welcome man, but this is not the purpose of this topic.

By the way many bugs were fixed like 16/9 fov, linux version, pop up menu etc.
Come and join the revolution !

It's hilarious you're complaining a 16 year old mod for a 20 year old engine, which is based on a 22 year old engine doesn't work with your less than 4 year old monitor. The primary monitor type up until around 2006 was the CRT with a 5:4 or 4:3 aspect ratio, and the NS1 HUD never had any proper widescreen modes, nor will it ever really since the HL engine doesn't support widescreen properly.

The fix is easy, you run the game in a window at 1280x1024. If you must run in full screen, you can pick up an older 19" square Dell LCD panel, which are still common and cheap.

You shouldn't have unrealistic expectations for old games, or beat a gift horse in the mouth. After the Steampipe HL update, NS was completely broken. One man fixed it for all of us to keep being able to play it, and even fixed some longstanding bugs that the devs never got around to fixing for one reason or another.

It's there, just not available: https://steamdb.info/app/120/
If you look at the source code release on GitHub I think it was version 2 or similar that got put on Steam. Not sure why it never got widely released but there you go.

It's been a very long time since I've joined in on the NS community. I was a big deal back in the NS1 days old folk might recall who I am but the memory is the first to go so perhaps not :). I showed my support for a long while with NS2 but admittedly it's been a very long time since.

I just wanted to drop by and thank the NS community for all the action and drama over the many years playing and to immortalize my old clan/gaming community OldF better known as the Old Fogies. In memory of both communities I have resurrected the OldF Forums @ www.oldf.ca - Theirs no content to consume as the old site and database are gone possibly forever but the forums are fully functional and everyone is welcomed to drop by. If you were an OldF member or know someone who was feel free to share this site with them. It's currently just a tribute, memorial of some of Natural Selections greatest days.

More will be added in the days/weeks to come.

Big Player, Big Fan <3 NS
