Crabsquids: The Ultimate Anti-Warper Weapon

I'm not sure if this is related to the various bugs that crabsquids have going on at the moment, but at this moment, an infected crabsquid makes a great guard dog for your base.

They are extremely aggressive toward anything in their general vicinity, and being as they are enormous and infected, they draw warpers toward them faster than toward you. They will also actually attack warpers from further away than warpers will sense you.

Couple that with the fact that Crabsquids are also extremely dangerous. That is to say, when they attack the warpers, they kick that warper's *ass*. They attack it until the warper flees, and come out of it unharmed.

All in all, it's pretty badass.

Why would you be building a base anywhere near Warpers?

Wouldn't you have every bit as much trouble getting in and out of your base past your "pet", once it matures, as the Warpers will? Perhaps more so since your choices are a.) swim for it and get eaten, or b.) smack your Crabsquid and possibly break its leash and chase it away from where you want it, or c.) pilot a vehicle in and have it disabled by EMP?

I don't doubt that they can stand up to a Warper and draw their attention. I just don't see why you'd ever park one outside your base. How big of a footprint do they have in your inventory (not that I've ever managed to find an egg, mind you)?

Can you raise tame crabsquids? Do they get infected? Or will they otherwise work on controlling a Warper?

-There are crabsquid eggs (can be found in the grand reef)
-the creatures in the alien containment module don't get infected unless there's another creature that is infected

Nope. Because if they are hatched, they are completely neutral to you (other than some small, odd bugs that should be ironed out later).

Unless they intend to make the hatchable things aggressive after they're released, that is.

They're completely harmless. Noisy, but harmless. And kinda fun to watch.

As for how much space they take up in your inventory, the same as the other big fish: 3x3.

    A) Yes, you can; just hatch them in the containment and they're tame.
B ) Yes, if you stick them in the containment with an infected creature. I have a whole tank of infected stuff I was using for warper bait, and to experiment with various things, and it included a crabsquid.

The eggs are found in the Grand Reef (at least that's where I've been finding them).

I've never hatched anything but I thought others had said hatched Stalkers attack the player just like the non-hatched ones? So, I just assumed all hatched creatures are hostile to you the same as the non-hatched ones? As I said, never tried it. If this is true, wow, I may have to get off my lazy butt and try it out!

Nope. They swim around completely ignoring you, eating yummy little fish, and chewing on metal. In fact, there's a thread out there about someone releasing a stalker and giving it titanium to play with for teeth.

Unless this has been changed in recent patches. Which, let's face it, is possible. :) But when I went through feeding Smiley, none of the hatched stuff was aggressive to me. And I hatched and released a *LOT* of stuff (including a Mesmer, which didn't even attempt to mesmerize me, and an Ampeel who didn't shock me even though I brushed up against it).

I *did* sometimes (but not always!) take damage on releasing the Crabsquid, but it isn't an attack per se. It seems to be a game bug of some sort (probably related to the bug of it damaging your base if you pick one up and release it into a tank).

Note that this was back in August, but I haven't had any issues with things attacking me even to this day.

I, personally, guarded my base with ampeels, and they did a pretty good job. They still can shock you though.

Huh. I must not have brushed close enough against them. The one I put out didn't shock me, but I didn't deliberately poke at it to test; I just was close to it when I let it go.

I released a crabsquid and it attacked me and did its EMP move all the time. So are only certain animals allies. I'm confused with people saying they don't but I see people say they do.

Did you hatch it from an egg? Or did you spawn one and then just drop it?

I wonder if that behaviour was something changed in the new patch. In the old one, it was completely passive to me (other than the single shot of damage on releasing it).

I tested it out. Apparently some released enemies *do* show aggression toward you now, or at least will take a bite out of you occasionally. .... well, sort of.
I released a stalker and it showed 0 interest in me at all. It did try to munch on my Seamoth a few times. Did no damage (or little enough I didn't notice).
I released a bone shark. I took damage right off the bat (the same as when I release a crabsquid, which didn't happen before!), but from then on it avoided me. What it *did* do was violently attack my Seamoth, however. Taking it from 100% to about 55% in several bites, unlike the harmless stalker-munching.
I released a crabsquid. I took damage right off the bat (same as earlier), and like @Hulkie2345 mentioned above, when it got too close to my Seamoth in the cargo bay, it began using the EMP. I took no damage from the EMP, and it didn't actively attack me itself, but the EMP was annoying. Plus, stunning.

I wonder if that is why people were reporting their released fish were attacking them: it's the *Seamoth* they were attacking; not the *player*.

That does make sense. Every time I released an enemy fish. It was near my vehicles. I didn't try doing it away from them.

Yeah. I don't take my Seamoth down to the base near the Warpers and Reaper Leviathan. My moonpool is up on the ridge above the base, away from the dangerous things that might blow it up. I can zoom from moonpool to observation base without getting grabbed using my Seaglide. So when I was releasing fish originally, they were nowhere near my Seamoth.

The closest thing they were near to was an observation room, and the only one who reacted differently to that was the Gastopod, who attempted to drop gas pods even though I was behind a wall (they didn't go through the wall).
