If the fog around the islands is *not* natural (ie, it's percursor masking), here's an idea...

...maybe radiation from the Aurora explosion should make some sort of distortion effect around those fog banks

Also, if it is natural fog, then the wind created by the explosion would also probably cause some temporary dissipation of the fog banks.

Just an idea, not sure if it would be desirable.

The fog exists to hide the island from a distance so that it doesn't look fucking awful because of the lack of trees and foliage on it. :/

Here's hoping that is solved by LODs or something similar later (basically, a lower-quality version is rendered at a distance where you can't notice the difference, replaced incrementally with higher and higher quality versions as you get closer).

That's not at all a bad idea, especially given the game progression is pushing players to find and explore the island not long after the crash.

I seen some people have trouble seeing the fog from their lifepods sometimes. Mabye make it slightly more noticeable

The island is kinda far away for the air displacement from the explosion to greatly affect it. On the idea at hand, I think the player already has enough incentive to go to the island; the beacon from the sunbeam and the sunbeam messages both point the player to the island. If the fog did change a little after the explosion the player (most being on their first play through of the game) will pay little attention to the change.

On a side note, I always wondered about that fog. It dos'nt really make sense because the island has no abnormal wheather conditions and the fag can't be seen from the inside...
