Firstly, let me say this game is just awesome. I turn my lights off and play and just get the crap scared out of me in the dark depths of the ocean. I love it.

Unfortunately, after a day of fun play, the game has started crashing randomly. I would be very appreciative if you could help me figure out what is wrong and get it working again.

I was able to play for 6 hours yesterday without any issues on the highest graphics settings, native screen resolution 2560x1600 full screen. After a few hours break for some meetings, I can back and fired it up again and it started crashing. Initially, I could play for a little while before crashes. But now they seem to happen within a minute or two.

Steps I've Taken to Troubleshoot
  • I've reduced my graphics settings to Minimum and also tried Recommended
  • After more crashes I decreased the resolution to 1920x1200 in Windowed mode
  • Followed the steps outlined in this Troubleshooting Guide on Steam
  • Verified the Integrity of Game Cache in Steam - it verified
  • Quit Subnautica and Restarted it
  • Restarted the PC
  • Decreased my memory frequency in my BIOS (no, it was NOT overclocked, but I decreased it from 3000MHz to 2666MHz)
  • Increased the fan profile on my CPU and GPU to make the fans start cooling sooner and keep RPM higher

Result from my Troubleshooting
Game is still crashing.

Update - Additional Troubleshooting Steps I've Taken:
    • I have now moved my Subnautica game to an SSD
    • I have cleared my cache per the post on this forum

    Still having crashes.

The game video seems to freeze for about 5-10 seconds with the audio still playing just before the crash happens. It tends (or seems to) happen as it is attempting to load a lot of environmental video elements, such as swimming toward a crash site, my rescue pod, the Aurora, the island, diving deep with the SeaGlide and its trying to load the detail elements on the sea floor, etc.

You could try switching to experimental, and see if that fixes it. A new stable update is coming around the 24th, though, so you might want to wait for that (or start a new save in experimental, and switch back to stable when the update hits and go back to your old save).

Agree with 0x6A7232; I have switched to experimental and have not experienced any crashes since. Still get some bad lag at times but no crashes.

Switched to experimental. No doubt there is a measurable improvement but it is still crashing. Mostly it seems to crash when I approach my Lifepod or the mountain.

I do, however like several improvements in experimental such as the move visible air bladder and the better beacon readout on my Lifepod.

So I will continue to search for a fix, but I am just loving this game. Well done guys, WELL DONE.

Crashing every 10 seconds of play in experimental. Not sure what to do. Literally can't play even a minute most of the time now. Any other suggestions? The game was just getting fun ;)

Clear the cache again. There's a tool linked in my instructions that will make it easier. I usually clear the cache after every >50MB update in experimental (so about once every day or two when I'm playing).

I think it's usually about every 10-20 hours of play, but that varies wildly depending on what you're doing. Resource gathering makes lag like crazy.

I cleared the cache and it's playing again. Your comment makes sense. I didn't use your tool but I think I made a mistake because all my floating storage boxes disappeared. So I'm trying to figure out how I botched it, and get those storage boxes back, but it is playable now. Thanks.

I figured it out after watching that YouTube video. Went back to my backup and retrieved the batch files for the cell containing my floating storage lockers and got them back. Conveniently, I understand now how I can 'nuke' items I don't want around anymore by placing them outside of the cells that I keep before I clear the cache. I had a bunch of fire extinguishers that were used up and I couldn't find anyway to drop them to get rid of them. So I stuck them in a locker and moved the locker outside of my cell and the next time I cleared my cache they vanished. Perfect!

Game running AWESOME now in experimental with cache cleared at regular intervals. 5-6 hours is about all I can play before I start getting crashes.

    Thanks @0x6A7232 and @foxxyfox !

You're welcome, and a tip: if you put items you don't want in a locker, and deconstruct that locker, they disappear as well.
