Dear Devs... Who designs the creatures?

A question, exactly as the title would suggest. I bought Subnautica originally because the creature design looked absolutely astounding, and I was not disappointed! In fact, throughout my exploration around the in-game world, and with the few updates I've seen, I've discovered the creature design was much, much better than I originally assumed! I love the active and flexible environment, and especially the designs and body plans of the organisms! I don't know if I just haven't played enough biology-heavy games, but it seems like each one of these creatures is truly inspired, and incomparable to anything in the in-game universe or anything we would see in real life. I think it's safe to say that the creatures are my favorite part of Subnautica...

So, with that said, I was wondering who exactly designs these? Whoever it is, if any of you devs are reading this, please send them my heartfelt thanks for making these fantastic beasts! Additionally, if any of you devs actually are reading this, and if one of you is the one who designs the creatures, would you mind saying where (if anywhere) you get your inspiration? Some of the organisms in this game truly baffle me- the mesmer, for instance: how on earth did someone come up with that? Oh, and definitely a big thank you to whoever codes the creature interactions- watching the animals of Subnautica hunt, collaborate, and flee from each other is a beautiful thing to watch!

It really is an incredibly beautiful game in so many, many ways. My favorite is actually the bladderfish. I mean, how can something that sounds so unspeakably disgusting be so pretty? lol.

All of the artwork is head and shoulders above. Wish I could agree and awesome both. ;)

Still i would like to see more and more diverse creatures. It becomes too repetitive after we pass Grassy Pleateau, as it is either empty or just same fishes everywhere.
Especially there are overall too many Spadefish and Boomerang. They are just everywhere.

Only creatures upcoming are two end-game creatures. I would like to see all concept-art creatures until the release and for me it doesn't matter if they are just as passive as Bladderfish.

More crawling creatures like Sea Treader and Cave Crawlers are needed. Rock Puncher is in backlog, it might return, but nobody knows.

There was once "Random Creature Varations" as one of dev's future plans but is cut off, which i find sad.

Cory ( @Squeal_Like_A_Pig ) keeps bringing in sea creatures he finds on the beach, the one that stood out the most was @Hugh

We have gotten a few deep-sea cousins of shallow-water species, such as the blighter or spinefish (or lava boomerang/eyeye). If anything, I would like to see some more of those. Other than that though, I agree with your statement that the spadefish and boomerang are ubiquitous. Perhaps they merely have superior adaptations for their habitats?

I agree, I would love to see some more crustaceans. As is, there is an abundance of fish/chordates in the Subnautican ocean, and though those are quite wonderful, realistically there would probably be more phylum diversity. I'll admit there are more crustacean/arthropod animals in Subnautica than are often recognized: The cave/blood crawlers, rock grubs, shuttle bugs, sea treader, and perhaps even the mesmer (not to mention the rock puncher). However, I would appreciate the addition of fauna more similar to molluscs, sponges, sea worms, cnidarians, and ctenophores. In addition to rounding out the oceanic diversity, this would allow the devs to experiment with different body plans, and the addition of crazier creatures. Although, there are already several species in the game that seemingly defy classification, which I love! The more imaginative, the better!

This sounds really nice, but take this to too far of an extent and you end up with something like No Man's Sky...

They only kill you if you try to kill them

Speaking of creature designs, has anyone seen this old concept art?

These creatures just look so weird. They almost look like they're from a completely different game.

I've seen that, out of all the concepts on that image only Gabe's Feather was kept.

I don't know who designed the creatures, but if I remember correctly, @Obraxis does the creature animations. It says something along those lines on his forum profile.

EDIT: Obraxis' profile just says "Subnautica Animator."

Cory is the art director so I assume he's the dream and nightmare specialist we've come to know and love. The concept art is his doing AFAIK

Pat Presley also did some of the concept art.
