Is the Lifepod supposed to drift?

I started a new game, built a small base and the seamoth nearby Lifepod 5 in the safe shallows and went off to the floating Island for all the scanables and veggies.
Following the beacon for Lifepod 5, I ended up over deep water. Deep, Leviathan infested water. My seamoth was eaten and after some frantic swimming, I finally reached Lifepod 5- nowhere near the base, way out West with a Leviathan swimming deep below.
What? Why? Why did the Lifepod move? Is it supposed to? It hasn't done that to me before?!
