I haven't played Subnautica for a least a good 6-8 months. I really do love this game, and how it differs from most other underwater games which are really low budget / don't actually make it to their planned state.

The issue is that I really cant find a good enough time to play Subnautica. I was getting really hyped about Multiplayer, and now that its not happened, that's set me back a bit. I've been around the forums daily looking for some new update, however to no avail... Every update that has arrived recently still has not motivated me to play this game again. The problem being, I really want to play it, though.

I am avoiding it currently because if I start now, I would finish it all in just about a weeks time, then when the next update comes, it will bore me as theres nothing really ''new'' or ''motivating''.. Don't get me wrong, I love the game and its developers but seriously, I hope this game doesn't end up like some other *cough* games that were *cough* released this year *cough cough*

TL:DR - I have no motivation to play Subnautica again because the updates are so random or small.

They're currently building a storyline which is taking massive effort and all the 'random' things are polishes and features added to support the game's story and its gameplay. It's Early Access, you can't expect every update to major and game changing; they're all building up to the final product.

Actually the updates are large and and of intensely high quality. The only issue in game is performance right now. I must admit I don't understand why people want multiplayer. This is a game about being alone.

When I bought Subnautica (sometime before the farming update? back when the ILZ was barely sculpted), a full playthrough with pretty much everything took ~20 hours of gameplay. I already considered that good for the price tag. Now, my most recent playthrough on the last update was closer to ~40 hours and I haven't even touched the lava zone yet. Granted, part of that may be because of bad fragment placement, but that'll be fixed soon.

The game now has significantly more to offer and each update adds quite a lot to the game. Most of what's updated isn't always explicitly stated either, as there's tons of minor improvements to various biomes being made. It's still worth giving another go. Besides, if you've not been in Subnautica for 6-8 months, then that means there's a ton of new things for you to explore! Even knowing the Lost river existed, I never knew how goddamn beautiful it was in-game until I got there.

Quite true. Every new game i make last me longer and longer as the new updates hits live. As for Lost river biome, that place absolutely blows my mind everytime i go there. Of course, my opinion is biaised alot since im a real sucker for beautiful landscapes in every game i play, probably why a heavily modded (mostly textures and improved landscapes) Skyrim got me so much as well.

If there was a way to mod this game, as in letting all them skilled modders improve the textures/landscapes and content furthermore than it already will at v1.0 this game would easilybe a huge hit, even without multiplayer.

That thread mentions this as the best Unity modding resource:

    http://www.skylineswiki.com/Modding

Dunno if any of this is possible with Subnautica or not.

Im pretty sure i've read somewhere (think it was in the multiplayer thread, not sure tho) that this game will not support mods either. I find it a bit sad but i can surely understand why developpers would'nt want their game to be mod'able. They work very hard and put all their talents into a project and it can be understandable that they would'nt want their finished game tampered over and over by other's work.

Of course, if it is at all possible to make mod for a game there will always be some peoples that will attempt it. I guess we shall see if its possible or not in the end ....

Memory portion of Subnautica isn't protected so depending on your definition of modding... there is always that door.

I bought this game about a year ago. I've had roughly 4 times in that period that I installed and played it heavily, then left it alone for months and went to other things. The key with subnautica is NOT to expect to play it constantly or on a regular basis beacuse of how they do their updates. Large chunks of content but always a few months apart from each other.

For best experience you probably should either wait for final release (sometime in feb/march I believe) or if it has been a long long time since you last played, now. So many things have been changed and added in since the last time I played about 6 months ago that starting a new game was actualy fresh and exciting and had a lot of 'new' feeeling to it. That said you will run out of content, especially if you like to play the more creative/cheaty styles where you have all blueprints or no air/food limiitations, etc, as a a major part of the game is working through the various stages of survival and growth and getting more technology, etc.

I've sunk about 45ish hours in this new chunk of playing, and I have not been to more then 1/4 of the wrecks at best, none of the deeper biomes yet, and none of the new biomes like the lava zone.
