Alternate plot lines?

As a DLC or something: maybe have the player in Pod 4, and have to deal with the challenges that pod faced (and you could also add all the other pods, each one with differing initial difficulty / circumstances, and let the player choose either a random one or a specific scenario on start?). Make Pod 5 be floating, burned out inside, maybe a pile of ashes inside by a defective fire extinguisher representing the alternate fate of the occupant of Pod 5.

Just a thought, but it probably wouldn't add that much more variation to the game, after the player manages to escape to the safe shallows. Of course, it might be easy to add in, too, so IDK. Just a thought.

It'd be a fun way to choose difficulty/game mode; game opens with player running to escape pods, a bit of fluff text explains the reasons why Pod X is Creative and Pod XX is Hardcore, climb in Pod of choice, game starts.

Hmm. I like that idea, too, but I was more referring to splashdown locations / getting a hole torn in your pod / being in a radiation area (not sure how you'd find a way around that one), and still managing to find a way out of the situation. Since they don't have friendly survivor AI players, you'd have the occupant of Pod 5 be deceased. Actually...

Wait, I get it. Your idea means Pod 5 gets ejected empty (or the occupant leaves and never returns), and you must travel to Pod 5 on the planet's surface, to use the Pod 5 fabricator / medkit... which makes sense.

Kind of, yeah; at least, that'd be part of the difficulty idea. Pod 5 is "easy"; you start there, you have a fabricator, and you're in Safe Shallows. Other pods are incrementally "harder" due to position, distance to Pod 5, local fauna, and so on. Not so much hard and fast difficulty like most people would think of it, more the game is harder or easier based on where you are and what you have... or don't have. As for game modes... let's say one Pod has a malfunctioning respawner; that's Hardcore. Another Pod, for whatever reason, has an unlimited supply of raw materials for the fabricator; that's Creative.
