  Honestly, this is too easy to find early in the game... the above water part really needs a cloaking device (alpha channel anyone?)

  See when they said that there was a giant defense battery near the mountains, I expected like... A mountain where the top opens and reveals a massive gun.
  
  Or it decloaks and there's a gun.
  
  As it is, I just imagine the survivor getting to the mountain island, looking around... And going "Oh, um, how'd we miss that?"

  Same. Although to be fair, unless you're actively looking for it, it's still small enough to easily be missed from orbit. On the other hand, they should have been looking for it, because they were investigating a known disappeared ship.
  
  Still, depends how they were scanning. The gun does fold up, so if they weren't scanning for energy signatures (or by the time it started charging up it was too late to abort the approach) it could conceivably have been dismissed as "presence of structures" without thinking it was a weapon.
