did you see The Martian? Because a pretty good chunk of that movie is Matt Damon talking to a recording system, and that doesn't stop the movie from being fantastic. It's also a pretty big chunk of the inspiration for this game.
I hope you mean the book that the film was based on is the inspiration for the game, because the game launched like nine or ten months before the film came out, and was in development for a year before that.

Yes, the book. Although I've read the book and seen the movie, and the film is a pretty good adaptation. Probably better than Jurassic Park, for example. Definitely better than Timeline, if you wanna talk Crichton books that are turned into movies.

The game is in early release. I don't see how those numbers indicate that they couldn't sell 2 million more copies when the final, polished version comes out. I know plenty of people that prefer to buy their games finished, with fewer (or ideally no) bugs.
I was instantly remided of Sub Nautica as I saw the general tech design. Maybe the devs should get into touch with the producers if making a movie or series will ever become an option to them.

More like "if money were no object, one day, would you like?"
Obviously it's never going to actually happen unless something amazing happens and the game becomes a huge AAA franchise or something.

There are currently around 880 thousand owners of Subnautica
the last sale actually had a drop in ownership from 881520 to 877078
The numbers of people actually playing is also steadily dropping, indicating a loss of interest at the general lack of content in the game.
