Hey creators of Subnautica
As you can see from the title, I said "New hunting weapon ?"
I mean a new weapon. Well the knife is really old thing in the game , but didnt you think about a new weapon that could be made using silver and quartz with some silicon
Crafting:
4 silver ore + 2 silicon + 2 quartz = Spear
Well I dont know what you think of crafting a Spear , I hope you get a better crafting for it

Because I dont know the answer
gathering fish by hand can be/is a pain in the %&#! the stasis rifle and the Propulsion Cannon makes gathering easier but both take battery's.
personally I think something non battery-powered like a spear or a spear gun could make things a bit more realistic
I wouldn't waste the Stasis Rifle's power on mere fish though; going after slower fish instead of the Peepers is a good alternative if catching the quicker fish is proving too troublesome. The spadefish and airsacks/bladderfish barely avoid you at all. Once you get the Alien Containment, then catching fish is no longer an issue.
Which honestly, is part of the game's intended progression. Early on, getting food is supposed to be a hassle and constant threat. Once you reach the midgame you have farming to supplement that and then are able to raise your own fish. No more heading out into the sea to struggle with catching fish that lead you on merry chases through the depths, when you can just raise your own.
Realism is very relative in Subnautica, because there could be things like the fabricator's blueprint lock keeping you from making a spear. That, and its not really supposed to be super violent. The knife and gas torpedoes are about as much violence as I think we'll get.
I agree and I'm totally on board with that development choice. There's no shortage of games all with no individual shortages of tools of destruction; I love the idea that SN prompts you to play in a different mindset.
I see you've read "The Man vs Kzinti Wars" too.
For the rest of you, and this is how I view Subnautica: The humans have become a bunch of space hippies and there hasn't been a war or even a murder in, like, two centuries. Even knowledge of how to make weapons or the history of violence is restricted to only a small percentage of the population, such as starship captains (and only the captains).
So when the humans first make contact with the warlike Kzinti (whom later became the inspiration for the Kilrathi via blatant plagarism), the human ship in question was completely helpless as they had no weapons and the crew were too sheep-like to fight back even if they did. But the captain, who had this "forbidden knowledge" turned the ship's astronomy telescope into an improvised laser cannon and used it to blow up the Kzinti warship.
If we paint a similar society of space hippies as the backdrop for Subnautica, we can understand why we've got matter replicators that can build working submarines out of raw metal but for some strange reason refuses to make you a weapon more potent than a cheap knife. It's not the computer can't make you a harpoon gun, rather that it's just a whiney little politically correct snob who refuses to do it even though your life is constantly in mortal danger. Because fish lives matter or something.
Which is why I said in an earlier thread that I don't see it as the devs wanting us to be pacifists. Rather I see it as they want us to actually use our brains to find more creative ways than "pew pew pew" to kill all the hate-filled monsters that populate this world. Propulsion cannon and acid mushrooms. Stasis field and fast stabbing while the creature is helpless. Repulsion cannon targets into lava beds and watch them roast. Or my personal favorite, using the terraformer to trap Reapers into little pens with no food.
spears are not so "ancient" that they are never used any more u you can still use them for fishing/hunting frogs and you can find them and the heads to make them at the hardware store and amazon

But why would it be loaded into the fabricator? What purpose would it serve during the building of a phasegate?
The fabricator is a survival fabricator. It has things that help you survive.
Exactly. Why wouldn't the fabricator have every single thing it could possible make stored in it by default, just as a matter of course? I'm sure hard drive space isn't really an issue any more.
Another big Niven fan here ... love it!
No its not. Its not in any way designed for survival. Its an all purpose device, and I see no reason why it would have a spear in its database. It has a knife because its a tool. A spear, however, has no construction use.
It may very well have the blueprint. However, the fabricator can only make things it deems appropriate, and "for your safety this setting cannot be overridden".
And don't even get me started on the stun everything.
Furthermore, if someone decided that the lifepod should, rather than a survival tool, contain a machine meant to facilitate heavy construction, they should also be taken to court, for the same reason. It's like opening the supply box on a lifeboat and finding a bricklaying kit instead of food or flares.
For it's own safety, it better make everything available or it's getting tossed into the deepest abyss I can find.
Let me reiterate. It is a machine mainly designed for construction and tools. A knife is a tool. A spear is a weapon. There are NO weapons in the fabricator database (Save for torpedoes, but neither of those are really killers), or it just deems them not suitable, because perhaps weapons aren't seen as acceptable, as @DagothUr said. Also, as he said, the devs want you to use your brain, not a spear. Its not meant to be a hack and slash survival game.
Why? I for one enjoy the spirit of a lively debate. Most of the people on here are pretty smart, so it makes for some really good debates.
one thing i learned with time, you cant stop peoples from debating something
thats in fact the point of these forums: report bugs, submit ideas and debate on them.
best you can do if a debate irritate/doesnt interest you is to ignore it
I was a bit salty at the time with something that had just happened to me so I decided to take my anger out on the forumers in a way, which was the wrong thing to do.
Apologies.
