All the ways to update the game while keeping all of your bases?

I know IGP's way, that's the only way I've seen so far. I want to be able to continue through these updates while keeping all of my bases, I think IGP's way is only used for one base. Even if it could be used for multiple areas it would be very time consuming for someone having bases all across the game. Are there any easier/shorter ways? What does the update save, and keep playing option do?

I personally have not seen any other way either. What a huge update does is that it upgrades chunks of terrain in your savegame in order to reflect what the said changed terrain has become. If youre lucky enough to have built bases where terrain has not been alterred, then your bases will still be functionnal and remain the same. However if you got any bases exactly where terrain have been changed, when upgrading, its very well possible that those said bases might be either buried and/or alterred or even completely gone.

For those reasons when a big update happens its recommended to simply start a new game completely. Even with IGP's neat lil fix its not 100% recommended since you basically deny the game the right to apply changes to certain part of the world.

In the end its a tough choice, keep your savegame knowing it might get wonky or let go of all progress and start anew. Such is the way of Early Access games sadly. Personally i dont mind at all to start over and over, i in fact do it often even when theres no big updates so it doesnt affect me much but i can understand how it can be frustrating for others that are not like me.

Of course, when you decide to start playing a game in alpha/beta/EA stages you got to understand that from time to time there will be overhauls to the game that renders savegames obsolete at some points :disappointed:

Thing is, even after early access something will always be added to the game. What then? + deny the game the right to apply changes to certain part of the world? That is true but it won't impact anything. It's updating the game and allowing certain coordinates in the game to stay unchanged. It doesn't deny the big expansions that are being made to subnautica. It is denying that little space where your base is, which is exactly what you want. It's a little space that isn't going to impact anything, even if subnautica added new species to that area, it would still be around it, so it wouldn't matter much. + If the game was updated in that case anyway, they would probably still spawn in their set location. The location you put into the config is the voxel terrain and set up of your base. Everything else is fully updated. Denying the change to that certain part of the world is the whole point of the work around, to keep your progress. Having a little terrain stay unchanged isn't going to do anything bad, subnautica is already done with those areas, and they are moving on to expand on their seas, not where your base most likely is.

Im pretty sure that once the game goes on official release, any subsequent major update will be on the form of DLCs, which will add new parts to the world rather than modifying already existing parts of it. For this reason, nothing (or minor things) of your savegames will be modified, it'll rather be added with new terrain, meaning that we wont need to restart new games. I could be wrong but im pretty sure thats how it works.

At any rate, after official release, these major updates/DLCs wont happen as often as they do in Alpha/Beta/EA state. Right now we saw these major updates coming roughly once a month (sometimes a bit longer).

Another way to at least shorten the time it takes to start anew is to use the console to spawn in some stuff or give you all blueprints.

I know I know that may be controversal for some of you. But since some players do not have as much spare time for gaming as other may have, it is kind of a workaround to get to the point you already where before. At least it saves you some time, since collecting all the fragments again can take quite some time not to mention the time it takes to collect all the resources to build a midsized base. Not to speak of the huge bases you can find in the "Show us your Seabase"-thread. Those must have taken many hours just to collect the materials...to rebuild them every month or two...

Since not everyone likes to start completely over every month or two. I can totally relate to the players that do not wish to lose their progress but still want to try out/see the new things the devs added to the game.
