Worth a buy?

Hey there!
I recently was recomended to check out Subnautica by a friend of mine, so I did and i have to say I am pretty impressed with the potential of the game.
Now i know there's probably hundreds of threads like these but I'm interested to hear if you would recomend Subnautica for me if my most important reason for buying the game is coop/multiplayer. Now I know it's not going to happen anytime soon. But id like to hear some input from people who are invested in the game.

Please move this thread if it's in the wrong section of the forum.

Kind Regards
Digger

I think it's definitely worth a buy. They have really nailed the game thematically, there is tons of cool stuff to explore. I feel like I have gotten my moneys worth out of it already (just hit 24 hours of played time) and the game isn't even close to finished.

I really enjoy the sense of terror when diving in deeper zones, not knowing when a shark could kill you and the excitement of making it back to your sub just before you run out of air.

That does sound awesome, I've allways thought the ocean are more interesting than space since so much of it on our planet is unexplored. But what worries me about Early Access is the recent Spacebase DF-9 and that kind of stuff. Now I know Unknown Worlds from Natural Selections, I really think it's a good game but my biggest reasons for even considering to buy Subnautica is if there will be a coop or multiplayer experience, now I know multiplayer/coop is going to affect how things in the world reacts and mostly threatwise it's going to have to be adjusted quite significantly I would say looking at gameplay footage and stuff.

    What i want from Subnautica:
    * COOP or multiplayer with a friend, start in the lifepod and try survive and build a base and then progress deeper and deeper from there.

The theme of the game is really something I'm impressed by, it's just that would it be a good buy if I buy it for t a feature that as far as Ive seen hasn't been officially said to be implemented? (again correct me if im wrong)

Anyway, what I've seen looks really awesome.

    Couldn't agree more.

If you like Early Access gaming, this game is one of a kind.

Well, I can't say I dislike Early Access games but the only thing that does worry me is that it has a chance that the release would be poorly done or just not completed at all. But I suppose that's the whole thing about Early access, still coop is the biggest reason for me to buy Subnautica. What do you guys think?, would this be a feature that's something that could be implemented within 1-2 years?

The latest dev comment on coop/multiplayer:

    http://unknownworlds.com/subnautica/subnautica-multiplayer-when-if-how-and-why/

If that's critical for you, you probably want to wait.

Personally I'm totally happy with single player only and after 90 hrs so far Subnautica was worth the $20 to me.

I don't really understand the point of multiplayer in this game. Fighting against other people doesn't make sense. You crash landed on an alien planet and are trying to survive. If you find another survivor from the ship, killing them would be the last thing you'd do. So co-op is the only logical possibility.

But even then I don't see the point. What are you going to do? One person can easily scavenge an entire biome by himself. What's the other person going to do? You're swimming around together, you see a piece of quartz. You both race to it, but it's still just one piece, so only one of you can get it, even though you both want to craft fins...

Basically you'll need twice as much materials. Eventually you'll realize that the most effective way get things done is to split up and go scavenge different areas. Basically to play single player. Maybe it would be fun to build separate bases and invite each other over for a tour with complimentary cooked peeper. But that would get boring after a couple times, I think.

Considering how unique and atmospheric the single player is, and how much potential it has, I think wasting time on multiplayer would be a mistake. I'm glad that the developers seem to agree.

@Supermax sniping's a good job, mate! It's challenging work, out-of-doors... I guarantee you'll not go hungry, 'cause at the end of the day, as long as there are two people left on the planet, someone is gonna want someone dead.

sorry that quote just popped in me head cause of the "two people left on the planet" bit

It really isn't something I should decide. Some people love games like Minecraft or Stranded Deep. Some people love games like Star Citizen, and some love games like COD or TF2. Whatever your preference is for gaming, it's honestly your decision.

There is truely something to what you guys are feeling i'd just like to share the experience with a friend and build and sruvive in the sea together. I'll most likely end up buying it anyway but I'd like coop just for the fact to survive together anyway.

Definitely a buy for the price. Just wandering around and seeing all the great underwater graphics and sea creatures alone is almost worth the price of admission.

Just passed my 131 hour mark and still haven't gotten bored of it. If I start to get bored I start a new game instead and I'm immediately loving it again. It has lots of replay value

Bought this game almost a year ago, based on the artwork, a working underwater engine and the fact that the devs are experienced and no one hit wonder to just get money and jump out of some early access, like I've seen with so many other early access games.

It started with only a small environment of the safe shallows and a little more, but constantly updated all time until it's now gotten quite big. You probably won't have to fear any early access disaster and this game will be able to give you enough hours (mine are 100+) already in it's unfinished state now.

Mind that I haven't seen any beautiful underwater game as rich or fantastic as this one that has free exploration, crafting and not tuned to underwater combat. So how many multiplayer (or even only singleplayer) games with these features are out there?

Ask yourself if you can accept this game in singleplayer. If, yes, then I'd buy it and try to convince the devs to support multiplayer. If multiplayer is a must, then I'd advise you to wait.

Multiplayer isn't a must but I have bought the game now. I can say that the potential is what made me buy it, but my biggest hope of all is multiplayer. Just to start survival with a friend and plan out how to survive is something I've allways wanted to do in the ocean. And finally Subnautica is here and I really really would like to get Multiplayer, once they have implemented some more features I'd fully say that this game needs it. Even though it seems quite allot of some of the devs are against it, but i personally want at leat COOP

I would say most (if not all) of the UWE team is for it. However, they are for a solid single-player game first - which means this is a "limited resource" issue more than anything else.

The devs have stated before that if they made it multiplayer they'd have to switch everything around and it could take a month or two away from development on things like farms, the exosuit, more story, etc. They've mentioned it'll probably be a last stage thing they'll do before release or they'll do it afterwards as (Possibly, I'm unsure about this) DLC.
