Lerk Too Close To Ledge

see puffs of smoke
When I'm a lerk on a ledge and I'm too close to the edge, I see puffs of smoke against the ledge when I fire, even though the crosshair is not even touching the ledge. Are all my spikes being blocked by the ledge or are they actually getting through?

Yup, it means you are firing into the ledge.

Yep, and that happens more often shooting in one direction than the other. VERY strange. Best place to demonstrate this is the Power Silo. There are three ledges up at the top. Fly up there sometime and shoot at the resource node from each side. You'll notice that you have to come much further out of cover to shoot down from one side more than the others. (Maybe even 2 out of the three, not sure.)

Another good place is on the catwalk in the great viaduct hive, you cant shoot spikes without flying

When you run into that, try moving to the side of whatever vent you're in and shooting out at a different angle. That will frequently get you a clean shot without having to come out any further from cover.

This doesn't always mean that your spikes aren't hitting. Most of the time it probably does though...but just a few minutes ago, i was Lerk in ns_caged. I was in that vent in the marines base, Constantly being healed by 2 D-Chambers in the back and using Umbra to cover also. One guy decided to run almost directly under me. I started shooting lower and the graphic for the spikes hitting was showing like it was hitting the corner of the vent. But the guy still died o_o

You said yourself you used umbra, last I checked that hurt marines too. Most likely he was close to death and your umbra cloud killed him as it doen't affect or get affected by armor.

does umbra hurt people? never seen it kill some1.

on the power silo the ledges are a great place to kill a full human outpost because its far enough up so that the SG's wont bother even trying to shoot you

btw is it possible to fly+ use spikes above a building for ages? or do u just run out of energy? iv tryed it but i fall after about 2 secs :/

no, even with adren 3, your flight takes up too much energy than you can replenish (granted its almost on par, but add in spikes and well your hurting for energy, if you have it, umbra at the sturcture (usually a Turret) and start biting it, itl die by the time umbra wears out, just be sure to move around a bit as sentries still shoot you through the cloud)

i think thats posion spores that kills.. or else lerks would be spamming umbra in marine base to KILL ppl instead of guarding their fellow kharra teamtates

i've also experienced the spike hit animation triggering on ledges that do not apear to be in the way. Do not be fooled, your spikes are actually hitting their target. I learned this in the power silo when i noticed even though my animation was hitting the ledge i was succesfully killing marines. I haven't tested, but i should, weather or not other players see a proper spike, or if it is blocked for them also... if it is that would be quite unfair for them, to not be able to see what is killing them.

Umbra does poison damage, or oxy damage, you get the gas mask Icon and an O2 indicator when umbra is in the area. This affects the marine health. Umbra takes 3/4 of a lerks energy to produce so flying around in a marine base trying to spam umbra ISN'T going to work. You'll end up on the ground trying to regen energy because you used it all to umbra and fly around.

This has turned into a lot of contradictions... the spikes are being blocked... no you're actually hitting the target. The question comes down to: Are spikes a hitscan weapon? With the visual spikes being just that - visuals? If they are hitscan weapons then your spikes are damaging the target but the visual spikes are hitting the ledge.

I always thought that umbra didnt hurt marines, but I guess it does. However the damage is so low that its probably not worth using it as a weapon to kill the marines.

Umbra doesn't hurt marines, the guy is confusing it with the GREEN spore cloud. Trust me, I've tried to knife a few lerks in umbra, I just die when they bite me .

    umbra does no dmg
    spikes are hitscan
visual spikes are just there for show (not the actual spike path)

Read the lerk guide. Sorry, the DEFINITIVE Lerk Guide

I tested the spikes. The tracers have nothing to do with the spikes actual flight path, and the spikes are a hitscan weapon which strike whatever is under your target the instant you click, regardless of what the little fwooshing needle model graphic thingie says.

Spikes are also not terribly accurate.

Yeah, I didn't think umbra did any damage. The few times I get to play Marine I *always* go for the Lerk first, without it the Fades die quicker. Anyway, I've never taken damage chasing a lerk through his umbra to knife or weld him.

Interesting about the hitscan/tracer issue with spikes, I did not realize the discrepancy. Now I'll be able to stay in more cover than I used to.

i thought for sure that spikes are not hitscan.... the spikes dont move at a instant speed like a bullet, try firing across the whole refinery, the arced path is visable there.

It has been discussed several times before. Lerk spikes ARE hitscan, and hit exactly where the crosshair is. In addition to that, there is a tracer which drops over distance. However, the spike does NOT hit where the tracer lands, nor when the tracer lands. The spike hits instantaneously, exactly where the crosshair points, regardless of where the spike tracers go.

Even if Umbra does little damage, There's no way that could have caused him to die if it said i killed him with spikes when he died.
