Great fun for the competitive players and all-around good news for NS2, but I'm actually disappointed. Not because of the announcement but because of the great amount of hype that was blown on this. I will have to try to remember to be more careful when reading UWE PR which I previously had no reason not to simply eat up and not to follow UWE announcements live in the future as it's a big commitment, yet at least for me far better to just read about it afterwards. I don't usually watch these streams so it just felt like my time was wasted. Sorry, I hope the feedback was at least a little bit constructive.
Come on they are just trying to sell some more copies of NS2 - they said the first event generated quite some sales.
And surely it will be nice to watch (if it happens).
Though I have to admit I'd rather have seen some improvements to the game itself. Maybe that's something for the first anniversary?
If NS2 gets some improvements before the tournament (in 2014), maybe more of the new players will stay with the game.
theyre offering posters and tshirts for us paying for this event when they still haven't delivered on the promise of posters and tshirts from the reinforced program
well this is a good thing if the community can pull this off
fully sponsored by intel or something down the road would be better though
that would be where id like to see ns2 get to, with changes and time - for now being community funded would be a great show of the passion of the community but it won't sustain this game or its competitive scene imo

nothing wrong with that!
what they did wrong was led us to think it had something to do with how we play the game but it had nothing to do with that!
...then they tell us they expect us to pay for it.
Any lawyers know if this violates any gambling laws? WRT the lottery. Seems pretty cool regardless. A good incentive is what the competitive scene needs.

I don't get why people are so negative! This is fantastic. People upset about the amount of hype were just reading into the wording too much, fabricating things relating to the game itself.
Remember that this isn't related to development. It is taking place in March 2014. Therefore: It doesn't mean we still won't get those game developments.
You guys, you don't have to pay for it either. Obviously, the support would be fantastic. But if you don't want to cough up the money for it, you don't have to. You don't even have to watch it.
I mean, I love competitive NS2, I've done my fair share of shoutcasting competitive NS2, I love the tournaments, and so on, but honestly asking the fans for $30,000 to run a tournament instead of $30,000 to hire some freelancer to make the game better seems like sort of a waste, especially with the Reinforcement program ongoing. NS2 is a tremendous game but the competitive scene needs performance increases and better balance, not a chance to fly to Germany.
@TychoCelchuuu There's a reason why you have no disagrees on your profile, listen supporting the competitive scene is great.. but lets look at why the competitive scene is small
1) performance - this goes into a lot of things like user input response/server ticrate/overall smoothness etc etc
Ok now back to my post, the money would be better off used in figuring out ways to really bump up the engine (not saying it's not being done now) but maybe hiring an extra like lua expert and seeing what he can pull out.. heck maybe get a major breakthrough in lua coding
Anyway, hopefully this gets funded and it's nice for the few competitive teams playing and surely will drop out some good matches but this was not what I was expecting to be the big announcement
But on the bright side there are more things to come in the coming months which 'hopefully' won't disappoint so no need for the super negativity.. just.. idk lol

Remember that this tournament is completely independent of UWE. The resources going in to this from UWE is just the funding if we fund the 30k. UWE is a sponsor and not the host/organiser. We will still get more improvements to NS2!

I don't think anyone is having a problem with that, the problem is that they made this as a massive announcement when in reality it only applies to the few top teams playing

UWE is hosting the fundraising page. As far as most people can tell, this is an initiative by UWE, and they're donating to UWE to help UWE host a competitive tournament in Germany. All I'm saying is that if there's $30,000 out there from people who want to help out NS2, it would be better if UWE tried to get that $30,000 for improving performance (and I suspect even competitive players, in fact especially competitive players would agree).
Lots of people like tournaments. I like tournaments! But NS2 clearly is not big enough to fund everything it wants, forever. NS2 fans are not an endless money fountain because there aren't enough of us. NS2's most recent chance to really grow and expand, the free weekend, turned most people off from ever playing the game again because performance was even worse than normal. This is in addition to the thousands of people who have already written the game off because performance wasn't good enough when they last looked into it.
That is what the game needs right now: performance boosts so that more people can play. If NS2 was a more popular game, there would be more money just floating around, so to speak, for stuff like this tournament. That's why I think I and others aren't thrilled about the announcement: the idea that this is the next big thing for NS2 is disappointing because these tournaments don't bring in new people. And without new people, there's no new money. And without new money, UWE starves to death and ravens eat their bodies.
None of us want that, except the ravens. We want NS2 to thrive and be as popular as it could be. Honestly it's a tough game to get into, but there's an in-game tutorial, there are YouTube video tutorials, there are a ton of helpful vets hanging out in servers, there are Rookie servers (for all the good that does), there's even a skeleton matchmaking system. NS2 is complicated but that doesn't have to be the end of it. Games like DayZ, ArmA 3, heck even fairly simple things like Battlefield 4 still take a bit of learning. And you know what? They deal with it. And NS2 is dealing with it. The big thing NS2 is missing compared to those other games (aside from a marketing budget) is that it just flat out doesn't run very well on a lot of computers, or at least it doesn't when those people try the game (in the free weekend).
At least, that's how I see it. If the tournament pans out I'm sure I'll enjoy watching it. It's not like I think it's a bad idea in the abstract to run a tournament. It's just that the NS2 competitive scene is pretty small, because the NS2 community is pretty small, because tons of people don't even bother trying to learn the game when it turns out they get 23 FPS and it stutters and it takes 3 minutes to load. A game like that is only ever going to be a niche game, and when you add that to NS2's complexity, which mean it will always be a niche game no matter what, you get a really small community.
It's a nice idea and a commendable gesture of UWE to support that with a website, announcements and rewards. I'm sure that WasabiOne, Reddog and the others organizing the world championship put a lot of thoughts into it, but ... hm
Having the donation website on naturalselection2.com makes me think it's an UWE event. Soo while UWE is at it, they also want their community to finance their live events. You also can get badges which look pretty much the same as the reinforcement badges and the website looks pretty much the same. The only thing that's missing, is another popup while connecting, so somebody has a reason to code a popupblocker-mod.
Yes, I'm exaggerating and I know that everything is clarified in the text below, but who reads all that stuff? A own small website for donations (not on NS2.com) would have been better, showing everybody it's a community project. Or maybe on ENSL.org.
Another thing is that the "advertisement" has gone wrong ... "will change the face of the NS2 community" is pretty strong words. Tournaments before haven't changed a lot in community, don't you think? Many others and i thought "the great change" will be the matchmaking system you promised. At least now the "throughout 2013 and into 2014" makes more sense.
I watched with excitement and left disappointed.
I don't care about competitive nor do i have the time to care ... this thing here ... it just feels wrong ... NS2 being pretty small with a smaller competitive scene, trying to play big.

It would have been nice to see this announced by NS2WC, on a NS2WC site. With UWE posting afterwards "Hey look at this cool thing the community is doing. We've decided to sponsor it".
Oh and less hype would have also been nice. I can't really imagine this will change the face of the community or remove those post-pregnancy stretch marks, leaving me feeling years younger.
Overhype from Hugh killed what was a nice announcement from the Twitch guys Reddog/WasabiOne/Zephram/Virsoul
I've the utmost respect for the twitch guys, they put so much into the game and are doing so much more with this championship .. but I'd like to ask Hugh how does this 'affect every single player in every single country' and how will it 'change the face of the community throughout 2013 - 2014' ..
Grandstand announcements like this are just utter bullshit and I think all they did were to put the great work the twitch guys are doing into a shadow starting off .. ps. I have supported the championship, as I said, I've great respect for what the twitch guys are doing!
I thought it appropriate to chime in here just to make some things clear. First off thank you to everyone for the kind words towards myself and the other community members involved in this effort. Please realize this is NOT UWE asking for money, this is ME saying I would like to see a specific type of event that could really be enjoyable and something new for our community. However, I knew there was no way I could find enough sponsors and backers to go it alone. UWE was very generous in agreeing to cover the studio expenses should we reach our goal. You are not donating more money to UWE or changing any focus on its development. Through your support we can make this event happen and rest assured there is still great things on the horizon from the DEVs with regard to NS2 updates. If this isn't your idea of a good investment I appreciate your feelings, but please don't blame UWE or throw mud at them for it. This is and will continue to be a Community Organized Event. Thanks -WasabiOne
