progression system ?

first of all, i would like to say hello, i am new to these forums and so far, i absolutely love this game, the whole thing just meshes very nicely! i like the map levels and hope to see even more maps that are just as awe inspiring then what we already see. i, personally am 26 years old and look at every factor in a game as i also do dev work in my own time.

i have never liked FPS games, mainly because they seem to get stale within the first 10 hours you play the game. that is to say, there is nothing to keep you in the game after the initial release. this game has kept my interest and excelled at its overall theme and goal. though i would like to see some sort of progression system in the game... some ideas are level based, tech based, or even land based, such as trying to compete real time to own map lands verses other top players that is listed on a server real time... these are all done on other titles in which we have all seen. i think this game has a lot going for it already but i personally would really enjoy a personal progression system built into the game somehow... anything from armor types to weapon types or even ammo types that are released after some point or later in the game. anyway, point is i would really like a progression system to be looked into. this would not be easy in any way, that i understand but i think it would add a lot to the game.

last preconceived thought i had was some sort of ship building theme where the players not only fight for res but for space to build the actual level as they play... this was only a flying notion the hit me but i thought i would post it =)

So you want planet side 2: NS2 edition?

Not exactly, like I would say, PS2 is good but I am only suggesting SOME SORT of progression system not a particular type!, I'm sure the dev's at Unknown Worlds Entertainment are bright and intelligent young men. They could figure something up that fits in with NS2 quite well that would not extract from the game in its self! i am only trying to say that it feels as if most games today don't quite finish up what could have been and miss out on the chance to be great!

I wouldnt mind a purely cosmetic progression system. I wouldnt enjoy it, but i wouldnt mind it either.

@Fandore Any achievements or progression system rewards, would have to be none disruptive of normal gameplay, and is extreamly hard to do.
But cosmetic / custom models and stuff is something Cory would love to do. But its a Huge task. As an example, the female marine model is months of work, and will take a 1000s of hours of combined playtesting and fixing before making it into the puplic build.

I personally don't like progression type games due to most of them having new items or upgrades that give you an edge over the other players. If some sort of progression system were to take part in this game (which I doubt) it should only be something that can be seen on your end and wouldn't give you an edge, otherwise it'll just affect balance IMO.

this is my point tender, i agree with that fact and is what has killed other games in the past, that is why i proposed the idea of a personal based system, something that allowed you to gain something purely cosmetic and as far as the level based system, i could see it work with the overall value in points you get per match. this would be purely personal and one sided based. more then anything, the level based system would only hold your game record, nothing other then that. if anything, maybe it unlocks key looks that are not there till you earn them =)

Having a some sort of a Stats system where you could see your overall K/D ratio, Lifeform kills, accuracy, W/L ratio and much more could be interesting.

Different player models could give you an advantage, a black modeled skulk will have it more easy to hide in corners than the normal skulk, hence I don't think looks can be a part of it.

I personally don't want a progression system in this game, it's just not for NS2.

oh and dont forget, this is one sided, that means the player could choose to see these changes or simply opt out

Well since the community is dead set against even so much as achievements I don't see a progression system happening. Obviously it would be a huge balance issue, but there is a good reason so many FPS have those sorts of elements and it has a lot to do with why NS2 doesn't hold players very well.
