Beeping & Choking

Hi folks,

Did some searching, only found the super old posts here and here, but no useful responses.

The game runs fine, until something happens (last time it seemed to be triggered by jetpack flight), and from that point on, I get periodic 5-7 beep sequences, each of which is accompanied by a little choke/lag/stutter, certainly long enough to disrupt play. From the point of triggering, there's also one other weird symptom: I can't type. I can open chat, or the console, but typing either won't appear, or will appear in gibberish. I checked my language panel, but it hadn't accidentally triggered (nor was it writing in any of the languages it might accidentally have been switched to).

Restarting the program resets it, but that's not exactly the permanent solution I'm hoping for.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

-MM

Sounds similar to that firewall issue that plagued some servers a few builds back, where you couldn't type or buy weapons/evolve.

Do you have sticky keys enabled?
Never heard of NS2 Beeping... that sounds like windows.. and holding down the shift key or some other activating key will produce this beep.. and ofc a windows popup may interrupt your game?

Definitely not sticky keys - I've dealt with (disabled permanently!) them in the past. No other popups or Windows announcements to speak of. I alt-tabbed out several times while it was happening to see if anything noticeable was happening outside of the game, but I didn't see anything, taskbar, toolbar, anywhere.

It's not a temp issue. My fan's operating fine, my temps are cool, and I've played NS2 (and other graphics-intensive programs) for hours on end with earlier builds and not had any issues. This has only started happening to me this week, and I haven't the slightest what else to check.

Thanks for the input so far, though, folks. Keep it coming!

Any solutions yet? I too am experiencing the same problem as MalignantMouse with the beeps, lag and the inability to type in chat. I don't remember when it started but I know it was before the latest update and it usually happens after a few matches on the same server. I can like spam all the keys on the keyboard and sometimes it will solve the problem but don't think that is a viable solution.

Is this just on a combat server? or does it happen on a non combat server as well?

Are the beeps occurring when you press any of the letter keys?
Does your mouse become jittery/unresponsive at the same time?

Something like this when you get beeping and an unresponsive keyboard is something wrong with your computer, and not necessarily with the game. So we need to try to pinpoint what is what to help find a solution.

Not quite sure what you mean since I'm kind of new but a noob friendly server that everyone plays?

Mine beeps when I hold down keys like the E key for marines to build stuff or the shift key to be silent when playing skulk. Like MalignantMouse have stated, if I exit from the game and restart the game everything is back to normal.

I want to say it is more of a windows thing, but I should not be having access to those windows short-cut keys while in-game and I don't know what key combinations are causing it either. Hope someone has encountered this before and have a solution.

there's an escape key in lua that causes a beeping sound (like escape keys to cause tabs, spaces and newlines). Perhaps there's a mod you're running that is infact doing this?

Two things that might have something to do with this.

Input language keyboard. For Windows I think some sort of comb like Shift+Ctrl will switch to another input language that the game may not recognize. You cannot change back to your default language while in NS2, so the only option is to restart the game to fix the issue. So if it's vital that you have to use the key combo that is set for the input language, then you can change those key combos for it and still be able to enjoy the game with those you are using.

The key repeat rate for your keyboard. If you go into your control panel for the keyboard, look to see what the repeat rate is set at. If it is set at the fastest setting, try lowering it down a bit and see if that helps.

...I think that solved it...not having any issues so far after a 2 hour gaming session. And yes I did have multiple language input keyboard on. Will update if issue returns.

    Thanks to all assistance. :D
