Couple o screenshots
Whew, I finally found some inspiration to get my mapping groove back
Anyways, the layout for this map is still 'in-the-works' ,but I just had to open VHE and do something.
So here you go

Reactor Core hive. This is right under the hive (this was a cordon compile, so the hive doesn't show up).

A shot of the reactor core itself. Yes, some textures a not aligned 'just right', but we are talking extreme beta here.

Yeah, I used the same effect as in ns_eclipse, but it is the best way to make electricity without using a mass amount of entites. Oh, those semi-purple light are actually blue, I gues PaintShopPro doesn't have the best jpg compression. Ok, what do youz folks think?

love the lighting, although most will probably complain about it being too dark.
perhaps you should make the reactor itself a bit bigger? other than that, nice work.

I thought about doing that, but given the room is cylindrical, and the space I wanted around the core, the r_speeds would have been pushing 600+ if I had made it bigger. Btw, it is almost the size of two HA marines. Heh, besides, this is a sci-fi universe..who says they need four story tall reactors

:\ by bigger i meant fatter, to give it a "hey, without me, this facility is useless" feeling.

Perhaps. Although, the problem with making it bigger is space. If it was much larger there wouldn't be enough room for 16 alien spawns, or enough room to build stuff. On that note, I did not put a resource node in the hive, but one very close to it. Also, the part of the reactor thats visible is only a small portion of it, the 'caution' textures define the actual size of it, thats just the eh...reaction chamber, i guess.
I'll post a another shot or two of a diffrent angle.

Ok, two new angles for ya.

but maybe you could make the reactor a bit wider

I like it. Although it is really too dark to tell for sure, it seems to have lots of nice details and interesting walls.

If the electricity isn't actually purple, it should be. I'm really liking that look.

Get away from coretexture/scroll_arc texturing, its been done. Find a different surface to scroll_arc across, there are plenty that look great.

In my most humble opinion, duplication, in moderation, can be a good thing. Some call it consistency and/or familiarity. Not every single piece of a level must be a new idea.

I like it. I love the drapped cables (that's an HFX texture isn't it?). I's also like to see the core look liittle cubbier (16 units on the diameter) not much more.

Maybe it should be fatter after all, but the lighting from that thingey rocks!

Try adding some red lights in the foreground where it's a little too dark.

EDIT: Or is it? Hmmm... some lights where it's pitch black on the ground would do..

Thanks for the feedback people! It helps alot, makes mapping worth it.

Requiem: I used those textures to add some consistancy to it, try to make it look like it really belongs in the NS universe. If I find better ones, that are still very NS, I'll probably go with them.

Bytor: I totaly agree with you. Although, it requires carefull moderation and a little manipulation. So things don't look like carbine copies. In some ways prefabs are great for this very reason, but people abuse prefabs way to much.

ChromeAngel: Thanks man! No, those textures aren't HFX(what is HFX anyways? ). They are Inoxx, and before you people start flamming me. I take zero credit for them, and I have emailed the respective authors. No respone yet. All their names are going into my creadits/thanks. I agree, gotta love those hanging cables.

doctopepa: I had the same thought you did. When I tried it, it turned out very eh...Christmasy . I have a few green lights where the hive is, so you get the idea. Oh, btw the pics make it look darker than it realy is.

Yeah, I think you all are right. The core could be a little bit bigger, but not much! Thanks again for the feedback! Hopefully, I should get alot more done in the next week or two.

If those wire texture are not in the ns wad you gotta tell me where you got them from. Save me nagging my texture dude to do um.

They came out of my custom wad I put together for this map. I'll release it once it is complete (the wad file, not the map ).

Looks like the cables in texture set nine on HFX homepage. This might also answer Mr Ben's question.

First, I love the concept of it..just love it.
I've seen some guys complaining about the brightness, let's say you
make it that dark when the aliens have got the hive? I'd say thats a good idea, even when it came from myself

I like what I see, personally if the core was 50% bigger it would still be big enough for aliens to spawn in. This would also add a more "powerful" effect to the map. Putting some ambient sounds around it may make the map alot more interesting when played.

I convertted some(ie: only 3 textures) UT(Unreal Tournamnet) textures. Those HFX textures are really good too. That artist needs to do some NS textures
Here is one of the drapping cables textues.

Oh, I did make the core bigger, but just a smidge...8-16 units

You may want to refraine from using textures from other games, especially retail games like UT.

Even when I am not claiming that I made them, and I am plainly stating that *insert author here* made them in a readme file and the map itself(I'm going to make a credits texture, put it in the RR)? I could understand that if NS wasn't free, or I was charging a fee for the map, but I'm not..or ever will...I have emailed them(like I said before) and am trying to get a response...none so far. I've tried 3 times.
Btw, I don't quite understand this. Why is it 'taboo' to use some (ie: a little bit) stuff from other games? I could understand anally copyrighted material (eg: Starwars...etc..), but otherwise..imo it mearly proves how good the other game was...bah, I should just delete this map and all the wad files......f*ck

Do you write credits on your test if you cheat off of someone? He's not saying he made or thought of it, like one would do if they cheated on a test. That wasn't a very good analogy O_O

Nope, wasn't kidding. Although, I couldn't bring myself to delete the map file. I've lost three completed maps from various BS(harddrive died, poweroutage fragged the file and corruptted it, and another one simply vanished...), didn't want to loose this one from stupid frustration...

The wad file is fragged...phuc it...I'll just use standard plain ol'NS textures...So much for trying to set my map apart from the rest...I should have known.

And thanks for the praise evoL!

If I made a wad or a texture, I would be honored to see it used in another fashion on good quality projects. Yours is good, and quality. What use is making something that no one will ever use? Pointless. This whole concept of open source ownership is absolutly disgusting. I literally want to puke when I see it. Look at Sven Coop. He didn't make a single model himself, instead, he used models from across the community that might otherwise be ignored.

Crack, please ignore the naysayer who flame the bejesus out of you. Even if your map is not released with the official pack, it already looks good, and I want to see a finished copy, darnit. So get back to work!

And comprox, I don't feel that your reply was fair or in good taste. How can you cheat in art?
